Publisher's Summary

Unearths the stories of the little-known but powerful elder women in European myth and folklore, inspiring listeners to radically reimagine the last decades of their lives as the most dynamic of all

Western folklore and mythology are rife with brilliantly creative, fulfilled, feisty, and furious role models for aging women, despite our culture's focus on youthfulness. In her exciting new book, mythologist and psychologist Sharon Blackie explores these archetypes, presenting them in a way sure to appeal to contemporary women. Drawing inspiration from these examples, women can reclaim midlife as a liberating, alchemical moment rich with possibility and their elder years as a path to dynamic power.

After menopause, women can expect to live another forty to fifty years, making this stage of life longer than childbearing years. As Blackie describes it, midlife is the threshold to decades of opportunity and profound transformation, a time to learn, flourish, and claim the desires and identities that are often limited during earlier life stages. This is a time for gaining new perspectives, challenging and evolving our belief systems, exploring our calling, uncovering meaning, and ultimately finding healing for our accumulated wounds.

Hagitude best attitude

I enjoy Sharon Blackie’s writings. This one is my new favorite as I am going to be turning 59 in 3 months and many of the things she has written about are in my own life.

I love how she combines modern psychology with ancient myths and folktales In weaving a new story of empowerment for women.

The fact that she narrates her book is just icing on the cake!

Embracing my hagitude

This book touched me on so many levels. While I have enjoyed Sharon Blackie’s previous work, “If Woman Rose Rooted.” Hagitude has come to me in the perfect time. As I embrace that change in my life where I am now crone, wise woman, invisible, yet still quiet strength. Thank you for these words that helped me make sense of it all!

Essential post forty reading

I was enchanted from the very start. Why we write off our elders in the west in recent times has bemused me. A through churning through what it is to enter into our third age as women. Our power not our deterioration and burden years. Let’s all take this lesson and learn to cherish our precious elder women.

Brilliant book beautifully narrated

So glad I mainly listened to this. I usually read and listen. A brilliant book completely rethinking how women can age and finding inspiration in the fundamental power we’ve actually always embodied, but which the modern world seems to have forgotten. The author is the perfect narrator of her work. Highly recommended.

Embracing a Potent, Meaningful Midlife

Another wonderful book by one of my favourite authors. Re-shaping midlife means a step towards the women and elders we want to be in a world that wants us to shut up and disappear the moment our ovaries shut up shop.
Full of folk stories, myth, legend and real life experiences of women embracing a new and potent midlife.
Every woman should read this book.

loved it from start to finish

A fabulous starting point for anyone on the menopause journey. This book takes the reader on a quest into the unknown final stages of life and questions what that can look like, and how we can sit with this rite of passage. What I love most is the European focus as this is my heritage and I want to embrace my ancestral mythology and bring it into my life in a stronger way.

I loved this book from start to finish. It sang to my soul and offered insight for those of us that don’t have mothers, aunts or elders around.
Beautifully written and I loved that it was read by the author 🌸
