Story
Marla’s ancestors saddled her with frizzy red hair, sarcasm on tap, the Gawama last name, and the urge to run from her problems. Her bloodline was also supposed to guarantee she’d be a powerful witch. She isn’t, not by a long shot. Only those with magic are allowed in her hometown. Now that her teenage children are awakening, and sparking enough power to be a fire hazard, she’s headed back. Even if she isn’t ready. Even if she’s fresh out of divorce court. But then Marla and her kids all but blow up the town on day one.

Story
When it rains, it pours...and sometimes love finds you even when you can’t find yourself. Fate has given me a second chance at the happiness I once knew in the odd Southern town of Grimm Cove. But only if I can come to terms with some rather eye-opening revelations. Supernaturals are a real thing. I'm a witch. My high school sweetheart, who happens to be the Chief of Police in Grimm Cove, is my fated mate and a wolf-shifter. Ghosts exist and can be very nosy and meddlesome. Someone is murdering witches left and right.

Darcie Weatherby has a full plate - a preteen and sixteen-year-old twins, a wayward grandmother, a nightmare boss, and a manipulative ex-husband. The last thing she needs are hot flashes. Especially ones that start fires. Burning her boss’s house down was a total accident. Honest. It doesn’t take long before Darcie realizes she’s running on borrowed time. Unless she figures out a way to get these hot flashes under control, there’s a very good chance she’ll spontaneously combust at the Founder’s Day Masquerade Ball and leave her children motherless.

Robin Brannon was a normal wife, mom, and antique shop owner until a brush with death turned her day-to-day life upside down. Now, she and her two best friends are seeing things that belong in a fantasy novel. Ghosts. Visions. Omens of doom. Nothing that belongs in the peaceful mountain town they call home. Added to that, Robin's marriage is on the rocks, her grandmother's health is failing, her mother is driving away the customers at her shop, her teenage daughter refuses to get her driver's license, and her left knee aches every darn morning.

"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills.

It was a day like any other day for Marina Trahan...until she caught her husband in bed with another woman. Before that eye-opening wake-up call, Marina would have described her life as average or uneventful, maybe even boring. But now, chaos and confusion reign supreme. She’d expected to slide through midlife with her unwanted extra pounds, chin hair, and hot flashes and move somewhat gracefully into elastic-waist pants and having no verbal filter.

Story
The day after my 43rd birthday, my husband announced he was trading me in - his words, not mine. The news was unwelcome at the time, but honestly? I needed a good goosing to get up and find my way to the door. So I was freed from the giant manual of expectations authored by my ex. That was the good news. The flip side was less happy. Due to living in a state not friendly to discarded wives, I was also relieved of the financial "security" I'd spent a lifetime accruing.

Publisher's Summary
A paranormal women's fiction novel for anyone who thought adventure and magic stopped at 40. Guess again, it's just the beginning.
I never expected I'd be one of those people who had a midlife crisis. Sure, I'm over 40 and married, but my kids are grown and moved out. Life is steady, if predictably boring.
That all changes when my husband asks for a divorce and my whole world crashes. Everything I thought I knew, everything I am, gone in an instant. But I am not about to give up. After all, at my age, technically, I'm only halfway there.
I am ready to tackle my do-over; my chance to become the me I've always dreamed of. Starting with moving into my late grandma's cottage and adopting a new kitten.
However, my new life is a little odder than expected. Old books suddenly appearing in my house. Neighbors going missing. A supposed lake monster and a strange man who likes to skulk around with an axe.
I'm going to need to lean on my friends, new and old, to help me navigate my midlife crisis. Together maybe we will find a way to beat the family curse ruining my second chance at life.
Contains mature themes.

Very Unsure
First a public service announcement. Never try to kill yourself by sticking your head in a gas oven, unless you want to take your neighbors and anyone entering the house with you. Unless you're found right away, your heirs won't have to worry about burial costs. Messy, very messy.
Second, why do all these mid-life books have to have incredibly mean SOBs as husbands? It gets to be too much. I will say that the author has either researched well or had life experience re abuse, since she drops some true information about effects and treatment into the story mix.
Third, I'm ambivalent about the narrator. Her words are always running full tilt. I'm not sure if that detracts from the story or adds verisimilitude to the narrator's state of mind.
Fourth, I don't know why I'm reading all these suddenly appearing mid-life novels. I'm nearer to the end of life and know that a character entering her forties is facing her best years. She's even starting to peak sexually. Just saying.
Fifth, why didn't I know this was a cliff hanger? I don't buy cliff hangers. If I were to pursue this series, I'll definitely wait until it ends and probably buy the last book. This is not to say it's boring. It starts out very boring then becomes interesting. However, I don't like cliff hangers.

Naomi was dealt a bad hand but she is just to much of a scatter brain for me.
The main character is a nice person who was dealt a lot of crap-tastic things in her life but instead of building her up, she has let it break her down. Her level of anxiety is too much. Also, I have a issue with the flow of the story. There are too many contradictions. For instance at one point Naomi ask’s what happened to the old mill and a character says that it shut down 10 years ago or so. However, later on in the book Naomi who hasn’t been to the town in 20 years says the last time she was at the mill was right after it shut down. If she was there after it shut down and that was 20 years ago, why would she ask someone what happened and they say 10 years ago it shut down. It is a petty thing but there is more than one of those little quirks in the book. The story isn’t bad, it’s very slow in the beginning and gets a little better but all in all there is no real spunk or suspense and it is hard to relate to Naomi when she is so over the top about everything.

Unfortunately Disappointed
I was really hopeful for this book. I am obsessed with Nicole Poole and, as ever, she didn’t disappoint in her narration. I love Eve Langlais and have loved this new genre coming out of kick butt women who give no f****s and who know that midlife is not the end of life, but this one fell flat for me. Primarily because the leading lady kept her head so far in the sand that it got embarrassing. This is fine for me normally, but it was through the ENTIRE story. If I wanted a clueless heroine who chooses to play small and be willfully obtuse, I would choose a different genre since that is everywhere.
I kept hoping she would wake up to the truth, or have it shoved in her face, or something! Alas, it wasn’t to be. Hopefully the next books will give the heroine some redemption, but I don’t know that I’ll be spending the points to find out.

Disappointing!!
I love this author. But this book was horrible. I hate with passion the main character, Naomi. She is a naive, weeping, pathetic and weak character. The story lags and the ending is anticlimactic. I strongly DO NOT recommend this book.

Liked it...but
The ending puzzled the heck out of me. Nearly marked it down for that little weirdness. But I liked 99.99% of the story, so...
I liked the narrator.
Will follow with the next book, no doubt.

disappointed :(
I wanted to really like this book but the first 5 hours were really just a pity party by the main character. The last 2 plus hours were setting up for the next book. Aside from the main character, the others were interesting. The whole thing was just too slow moving for my taste. However, as usual, Nicole Poole was an excellent narrator and brought everything she could to the characters.

Sadly Disappointed
While I enjoy this author's books normally, I must admit that by the fifth and sixth chapters I was literally frustrated with the whining, moaning, and frankly weak main character. It’s fine to have doubts and moments of weakness ... but seriously? With a verbally abusive POS husband of 20 years, you’d think maybe she might find some dignity after awhile. I kept hoping. There are 10 year olds with more sense and maturity.
The storyline (as far as I got before I couldn’t listen any more) had potential and the narration was as good as one could be when whining and insecurity is all you have to work with. I’m just so disappointed. I really looked forward to this series. Now I will be exchanging both books. Teach me to buy more than one at a time. 😢

Midlife magic fun
Either Midway or halfway as you choose to look at it...this is a fun listen. Nicole Poole as always is fabulous. The story is a bit slow at the start but then it gets more interesting. Clearly a series. Lots of mysteries to unwrap. I love that adult children come into the story. Also I’m glad to see a character in the story is LGBTQ friendly. Definitely will read/listen to other books in series.

A Great Mystery With a Sprinkling of Paranormal.
I originally read the ebook on 10 July 2020
Halfway There has been one of my favourite stories that I've read by Eve Langlais. It is a classic mystery story with the promise of supernatural phenomenon just out of sight. I found it very easy to read, the plot had enough mystery to keep me wondering what would happen next. There were also quite a few scenes that sent chills dancing down my spine. However, things are kept "cozy".
Nicole Poole is a lovely narrator. Her performance brought all the characters to life. Nicole adjusted her voice to convey the various emotions of the narrative as well as the dialogue.
I love the concept of the PWF genre. Paranormal Women's Fiction where the protagonists are over 40yrs old. I'm a menopausal woman within spitting distance of 50 myself and loved how true-to-life Naomi was. Although my own family situation is much happier.
I could connect with our protagonist, Naomi, and felt her situation to my core. Although she hasn't started off as a traditional badass heroine, I have a feeling she'll become one as this series progresses. I must admit to getting very frustrated with her at times throughout this book. However, I have learned that these traits are very common in women who've been in long term situations like Naomi's.
I think Halfway There is a well balanced story. It's primarily women's fiction about second-chance sort of coming-of-age. With some humour, mystery, thriller and relationship threads woven through.
There's no perilous life-or-death cliffhanger (woo!hoo!) but a lovely epilogue and tantalising hook at the end instead. I'm looking forward to listening book 2.

Not For Me
The main character in this book is just so wet and week she drove me mad. I had to skip a lot of the story
but the ending leads to book 2. Don’t know if Naomi (the main character) will improve but I don’t think
I care to find out.
