Story
In the rain-soaked shanty towns of Excelsis, sellsword Niksar Astaboras drunkenly barters his way to a meaningless existence. Little does he care for the war that rages between men and monsters beyond the city walls, despite portents of its encroaching threat. Mortal life in the Realm of Beasts is short enough, and to leave the shelter of civilisation is to surrender to certain death. But death is coming to Excelsis. The forces of Destruction are on the move, and the realm quakes with each thunderous step.

Story
A restless menace threatens the town of Wyrmditt. Stirred from his grave by fell magic, Sabrodt, the Shrouded King, seeks dominion over the kingdom he failed to claim in life. So great is the terror inflicted upon the lands by Sabrodt and his nighthaunts that Sigmar, God-King, sends a retinue of his warriors most skilled in the art of Azyrite magic to liberate the town. The Stormcast Eternals of the Sacrosanct Chamber are warrior-wizards, imbued with arcane knowledge and the power to wield the energies of the storm in battle.

Story
It is said that all who live belong ultimately to the Undying King. In the shadowy lands of Shyish, Nagash, God of Death, calls forth his soulless legions to reassert his dominion. His dread advance begins with the free city of Glymmsforge, bastion of Azyr in the Realm of Death. Standing between Nagash and his prize are the brooding Anvils of the Heldenhammer, an ancient host of Stormcast Eternals, and Lord-Castellant Pharus Thaum, guardian of the Ten Thousand Tombs. As battles between the living and the dead rage throughout the Mortal Realms, the War of Heaven and Death begins anew.

Publisher's Summary
Within this book you will find Hammerhal, a fantastic new novella from Josh Reynolds:
Dark forces stir within the bowers of the mysterious Hexwood. A great warhost of Tzaangor beastkin, creatures devoted to Tzeentch, the Architect of Fate, defile the once verdant lands of Ghyran. All that opposes them are the noble Stormcast Eternals of the Hallowed Knights. Reforged in resplendent sigmarite and wielding the lightning of Azyr, few can stand against these heroes. But Tzeentch's followers are cunning, and as the Hallowed Knights wage bloody war, a second attack on the city of Hammerhal, which the Stormcasts are oathsword to defend, is coming to pass. Both the warriors without and the hunters within the city must act fast, or the truth about the Hexwood will undo everything they have fought so hard to protect.
Also within this book is a host of awesome short stories giving you a flavour of the many warring armies that exist within the worlds of Warhammer Age of Sigmar.

The old world is dead....
I have read almost every single book written as part of the Black Library since the late 80’s. Most of them are excellent with but few exceptions. I’m not sure if Games Workshop has decided that since 40K is so popular they need to prop up their fantasy line with space marines, but this book was a ham fisted attempt to hide a 40K story behind a sad and repetitive space marine meets steampunk storyline. Bring back Gotrek or Brenner, or even the Wine of Dreams... it was all better than this rubbish. GW, you have once again given your souls in a pathetic run on the cash till. You should be ashamed considering the rich background your predecessors left you to squander. I cannot return this, not can I get back the 15 hours of my life I spent listening to it. I am sad that the voice actor, who was quite good tarnished his reputation with this collection of second string space marine stories that only lacked bolters.
If you want a great story of sword and sorcery, look elsewhere.

John Banks is a master narrator of BL books and yet again he does this anthology proud, for me the 3 stories that stand out are Hammehal, Beneath the Black Thumb and the excerpt from Skavens Pestilens (I really wish that John Banks would narrate all that book) the other short stories are of a good quality too

Ok. If you’re new to Warhammer or the Age of Sigmar, come back to this after you’ve listened to David Guymers brilliant Gotrek and Felix books. And read some of the GW background!
First listen, I had decided that it wasn’t for me. But after a bit of immersion in GW I re-listened to it, and very much enjoyed it. Some more than others, but well worth the second visit.
