Publisher's Summary

Stephen Leather's first hard-hitting Dan 'Spider' Shepherd thriller, set in one of the most notorious and corrupt of British prisons.

Dan 'Spider' Shepherd is used to putting his life on the line. Working for an elite undercover squad, he has lied, cheated and conned in order to bring Britain's most wanted criminals to justice.

But when a powerful drugs baron starts to kill off witnesses to his crimes, Shepherd is given his most dangerous assignment yet. He has to go undercover in a top-security prison, a world where one wrong move will mean certain death.

As Shepherd gambles everything to move in on his quarry, he soon realises that the man he is hunting is even more dangerous than the police realise. And that he is capable of striking outside the prison walls and hitting Shepherd where it hurts most.

Happy when it was over.

Sorry, but I found it tedious. Narration was excellent. My main problem was that 90% of the book took place in a very limited...background. I don’t want to say much more as it will spoil the story. A couple very exciting “scenes” but otherwise, I just did not enjoy this book.

Great book

Been listening to Andy McNab books for a while and needed something as gripping and I’ve found them. First in the series and can’t wait to listen to the rest of them.

Multiple stories neatly woven together in one compelling book. The whole series is well written and performed.

Hard landing

This book was very slow to get going, after the arrest it could have gone a lot faster. Then the part in prison was also a little drawn out.

Hard Landing

Engaging storyline throughout. But narration, while clear, was hard to listen too. Slow paced. Gaps at the end of each sentence. Monotone. I almost gave up on the book due to narration. But great story despite this.

Absolutely superb

Although I’ve read many books of this type, this is the first one by this author and I’ve got to say this is probably by far the best. It doesn’t take long for the tension to start to grow and then throbs along at an amazing pace, hardly letting up at all. This book was my introduction to Stephen Leather and Spider Shepard, but the next book in the series is downloading from my wish list as we speak. The narration was tremendous, and the paused style of reading only lent to heighten the tension. A fantastic job by all involved. 5 stars every day of the week, can’t wait for the next.

Good premise, but got a bit mental

Loved the idea and the lead character. The way the action was written was very good. However feel people picking up this title were intrested in a story set inside a prison enviroment.

Full of pace and punch

Good story. Lots of detail and it certainly felt accurate. Couldn't quite get a handle on the time at which this was set - talking about reading the latest Harry Potter, but still using Walkmans? Narrator had a very distinctive style - great with accents, when he remembers to do them. Needed greater care with the editing - only book I've listened to where the narrator messes up a section and rereads, and it has been left in... Still worth listening however - I'll find the next Spider in the series.
