Story
In a steel-and-lead-encased bunker 20 feet below the basement level of his house, a soldier waits for his final orders. On the surface, a plague ravages the planet, infecting over 90% of the populace. The bacterium burrows through the brain, destroying all signs of humanity and leaving behind little more than base, prehistoric instincts. The infected turn into hyper-aggressive predators, with an insatiable desire to kill and feed. Someday soon, the soldier will have to open the hatch to his bunker, and step out into this new wasteland, to complete his mission....

Story
In the beginning, the gods destroyed the world. Five hundred years later, things haven’t gotten much better for humans. The demigods that were left behind to guard over humanity have been using them as fodder for an endless civil war between themselves, and the humans just go on dutifully slaughtering each other, battle after battle. It’s not all bad, though. Perry McGown makes his living off those bloody, stinking battlefields. He works on a crew that reclaims all the spent shell casings. But if anyone found out that he was a deserter from the war, he’d be executed for heresy.

This time, it may well be a knockout blow for many. The farm is still running, still surviving, and still trying to get things restarted. Publisher's Summary
Harden is the highly-anticipated return to the NYT best-selling series, The Remaining.
It’s been three years since Lee Harden emerged from his bunker into a world gone mad. Governments have fallen. And new ones have taken their place. In the United Eastern States, Lee and his team of battle-hardened operatives walk a tightrope of survival, keeping their fledgling society safe from the creatures beyond their gates - and from the enemies within.
Then, an ambush in hostile territory reveals a traitor in their midst - and leaves Lee barely clinging to life. Wounded and on the run, Lee and his team race to uncover the leak before it’s too late. Through a background of destruction, betrayal, and newly-evolved apex predators, they must stay one step ahead of a ruthless organization spreading out of the south - an organization that has allied with someone who wants Lee dead, and the United Eastern States demolished. But how do you stay ahead of an enemy that knows every move you make?
Reintroducing one of the most beloved heroes in post-apocalyptic fiction, Harden immerses you in a reality of desperate gambits, where wrong moves could cost the lives of thousands, but saving them could cost your humanity. The only rule is NEVER STOP FIGHTING.

Truly Exceptional
I'm a disabled vet who reads/listens to several novels per week. I'm always looking for books that feature the honor, integrity, and perseverance side of combat, without the masochistic and vulgar aspects of loss that only arm chair warriors include in their writing for shock effect. Don't get me wrong... there's plenty loss here.. but it's reasonable and balanced with sacrifice and proper cause and effect. It's more than respectful, it's honorable. D.J. Molles is my favorite author of this genre. For any genre, he should be considered an author of amazing skill and finesse. This book and the root series plant you squarely in the shoes of Captain Lee Harden. Truly exceptional story, characterization, and attention to detail. I've never felt so immersed and involved in any art, literature, or media as I have been with Molles' books. I'm re-reading The Remaining series for the 5th time, then I'll listen to Harden again. I hope I don't have to wait too long for Lee Harden Book 2. Bravo Foxtrot Zulu, Molles! I don't have the words to properly thank you.

Love these books.
I have listened to thousands of books from Audible. I have to say I was hooked on the this series of books from the beginning. D.J. Molles' descriptive style and pace are exactly what I'm looking for. Action, suspense, and great characters. This is the first review I have written for Audible. That might tell you something right there. Go back to the beginning and read (listen to) The Remaining. You will not be disappointed.

great premise, but no conclusion/ending
I do not like books that just 'end', expecting you to buy the next book in the series to see what happens (and the next and the next). I don't support such authors, so I'm not doing that. I invested 10 hours in this book to see what would happen, and it just stopped - no conclusion at all. To top it off, while as I stated I like the premise, this book had a hard time keeping my attention. I wasn't invested in any of the characters, and the story telling just wasn't interesting enough to hold my attention.
I assume the high ratings come from folks who read the prior series, so they know the characters and the style of the author. I didn't, and D.J. Moles is just not my cup of tea even though I like the genre.

overwhelmingly negative at times but great story
DJ is an amazing author and Christian is a great narrator, however it took me MONTHS to finish this story, just because it can be such a downer to listen to. DJ is not afraid to kill central characters, write relatable stupidity into others, and generally create a feeling of barely keeping your head above water whilst being circled by sharks, saltwater crocs and doorbell ringing missionaries. BUT the action is GREAT and Lee is inspirational as a leader that prioritizes the mission objective doesn't allow failure to stop him. if you liked The Remaining, you'll probably like this too.

An excellent return to the world of The Remaining
If you're reading this review, you've probably read the Remaining series (if not, do so, it's awesome!) I've read some of Molles other books since finishing The Remaining and while they were decent enough they didn't engage me like The Remaining series did. So if like me you were wondering has he lost his touch a little or something, worry not, this is as good as the books in the original series. Lee Harden is just such a cool character. Christian Rummel does an excellent job as always. Looking forward to the rest of this series.

a great continuation of the Harden storyline
I really enjoyed the remaining series so imagine my joy when I realised it continues in this series of books. The story rattles on well, there are some notable deaths (which should be no surprise if you are familiar with this narrative) but the tone of this one was more onwardly dynamic than some which was a nice change of pace.

Start with the other books.
I randomly picked this out just browsing and found out it's like the sixth book. I've gone back to the start. Really great story. The moral musing gets a fraction cringy in places, but past that into the action is fairly brutal.
