Story
Like most sane people, student Alex Webber thought he was hallucinating - perhaps he'd consumed something bad at the party he'd been attending that night, or he was severely overtired. But when he sees the mysterious man following Natalie again the very next day, he can no longer disbelieve his eyes. Although she denies the man's existence, Alex sees her walking with him down a road in his neighborhood he's never seen before - and can't help but follow.

Story
I celebrated when vampires were declared extinct. Those beasts had preyed on humanity for millennia, committing senseless, brutal murders. Like the rest of my colleagues at the Occult Bureau, I looked forward to a world where we could all sleep at night - where constant cover-up jobs were no longer required to keep the public calm and unaware. But the end of vampires wasn't the end of our problems. It was only the beginning.

Has potential, but a tough listen
There are some interesting elements to the book, However, I don't think if it knows whether or not it wants to be a children's book. I am guessing the sweet spot is teens. I was a Harry Potter fan and the sheer creativity allowed me to escape into innocence. This book does not quite make it, seeming a bit formulaic. There are a few other issues that prevented me from suspending disbelief:
The main character is an empath. Which is an interesting way to illustrate the emotional content of the characters. But the author uses this as a crutch and doesn't provide enough direct plot. The book would be better if the characters, settings, and character interactions told the story which I could interpret, allowing me to suspend my disbelief and enter the story. However, there is so much inner monolog with a given character telling me what I am supposed to see and feel that I never get a chance to engage the material. And if the author has chosen to really expose the emotional content of the characters, they need to be full characters. It seems to me that most of them barely break the surface of archetype.
The book uses the term magical repeatedly to differentiate those with magic and those with out. After the first couple of pages I understand that there are people who have magic. It would be akin to me using the term human in every other sentence. Unless I am specifically discussing aspects of the human race or the human condition, I don't use the word. It is unnecessary.
Similarly, there is another device in the book, an item which focuses magical power, called an espree (sp?). The book constantly mentions them, but they do little to advance the plot. They are completely unnecessary. I feel the books would be better with out them. They just seem awkward.
Anyway, I might give the next book a try to see if things have matured. There is some potentially interesting lore here, but I am guessing I will move on. This is just my two cents obviously. I certainly can't write fiction, but I have an opinion. And you know what they say about those.

Not Harry Potter but great book
One of the things I’ve noticed regarding the reviews about this book is that many people thought it was going to be another Harry Potter. I think that was an unfair characterization, I believe this book should be allowed to stand on its own merits. In my opinion, the story is engaging, filled with drama and intrigue. The main character is filled with fire always ready to defend her family and friends. So, I hope the people who wrote a review would please set aside their Harry Potter impressions and please give this story another look because it is well worth the buy.

Needs to pick up the pace but overall good story
I like this series. I do. But imagine pages of endless self-musings, doubts and reflections every time a character speaks or asks a question or even appears to approach the main character before she gives a response. It becomes exhausting and I want to yell, “who cares! Just answer him/her!” Or, “what was happening before all this again?” I just listened to the sample audio from the third book(which starts from the beginning) and It kicks off with more of the same. I’m all for building character but if I could cut out about 45% of her internal monologue it’d be perfect! I can’t see myself finishing this whole series. We’ll see.

Glad it's a different story
The first book had me enraged the amount of similarities to HP, but I like where the second book is taking the story. I liked that this book was from the POV of 2 strong females, and found Tatiana's POV as a ghost whisperer interesting. I hope we continue to hear the story from other angles. Kudos to the talents of Amanda Ronconi- she's great in this.

it just feels clumsy
in the most sequels there is a certain amount of exposition about the prior book required. in the case of this book I felt I was drowning in exposition I found myself saying to my phone several times o get on with it!
that said, I like the plot. I like the characters. I just found the presentation lacking and the exposition tiresome.
I'm a listen to the next book. but, it will take me awhile to get up the courage to sit through two books worth of exposition particularly when that exposition is not required for that third books story.

Entertaining. So good to find a new series of books that are easy to listen to, good narration, and the story continues to develop. A good book
The book was good overall, entertainning and fun. The parts where the narrator changed to Tatyana was a bit slow and tedious but still interesting enough, changing the narrator was actually a good idea. The author is very descriptive which kinda works against the story a couple of times as it slows the pace of the action, but not enough to be annoying and the fact that Harley had to drink some humility tea was a plus, she was too much of a smarty pants in the first book. A good book and I'll start the next one soon.

another fantastic book
The depth of characters is coming through as the series unfolds. You could pick up this book and enjoy the story, however, for the best experience read / listen from the first book. There is a brief re cap at the beginning of this book for book 1.
There is a central thread to the book and once again the excellent description enables vivid scene building and emotional attachment to the characters. This books switches story teller so it's very clear from whose perspective we are seeing the world.
Looking forward to the next book.

Silly character switching
I’m really not a fan of when books suddenly switch perspectives, and this one jumps to a Russian lady - the narrator is usually good but her Russian accent leaves a lot to be desired. These parts of the book are painful to listen to and meant it took me twice as long to get through as the fab first novel in the series. Fingers crossed the third book is just Harley!

Brought this book, but the audio is another story entirely.
Don’t buy this book if you are wanting to read the Harley Merlin series. The actual audio is for a completely different book and series. Disappointed, especially because I can’t find the legimate version.

Overall A Solid Listen
Overall the book is what you really expect going in from a YA book, the performance by the voice over makes listening to it an enjoyable experience. It set's things up for what seems to be turning into a fairly long series for something in this format.
