When the witch built the 40-flight tower, she made very sure to do the whole thing properly. Each flight contains a dreadful monster, ranging from a diamond-scaled dragon to a pack of slavering goblins. Should a prince battle his way to the top, he will be rewarded with a golden sword - and the lovely Princess Floralinda. But no prince has managed to conquer the first flight yet, let alone get to the 40th. In fact, the supply of fresh princes seems to have quite dried up.

Story
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Story
On a cold spring night in 1952, a huge meteorite fell to earth and obliterated much of the East Coast of the US, including Washington, DC. The ensuing climate cataclysm will soon render the Earth inhospitable for humanity, as the last such meteorite did for the dinosaurs. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated effort to colonize space and requires a much-larger share of humanity to take part in the process. Elma York’s drive to become the first lady astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions of society may not stand a chance against her.

An inn is a place to rest, a place to talk and share stories, a place to find adventure, or a starting ground for quests and legends. It is in this world, at least. To Erin Solstice, an inn seems like a medieval relic from the past. But here she is, running from Goblins and trying to survive in a world full of monsters and magic. She’d be more excited about all of this if everything wasn’t trying to kill her. But an inn is what she’s found, and so that’s what she becomes; an innkeeper, who serves drinks to heroes and monsters. Mostly monsters. But it’s a living, right?

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Great Story!! Cons: slow start & poor narration

Publisher's Summary
Harrow the Ninth, the sequel to the sensational, USA Today best-selling novel Gideon the Ninth, turns a galaxy inside out as one necromancer struggles to survive the wreckage of herself aboard the emperor's haunted space station.
She answered the emperor's call.
She arrived with her arts, her wits, and her only friend.
In victory, her world has turned to ash.
After rocking the cosmos with her deathly debut, Tamsyn Muir continues the story of the penumbral Ninth House in Harrow the Ninth, a mind-twisting puzzle box of mystery, murder, magic, and mayhem. Nothing is as it seems in the halls of the emperor, and the fate of the galaxy rests on one woman's shoulders.
Harrowhark Nonagesimus, last necromancer of the Ninth House, has been drafted by her emperor to fight an unwinnable war. Side-by-side with a detested rival, Harrow must perfect her skills and become an angel of undeath - but her health is failing, her sword makes her nauseous, and even her mind is threatening to betray her.
Sealed in the Gothic gloom of the emperor's Mithraeum with three unfriendly teachers, hunted by the mad ghost of a murdered planet, Harrow must confront two unwelcome questions: Is somebody trying to kill her? And if they succeeded, would the universe be better off?

Twisted, Challenging, Luscious and Devious
This one isn't for the listeners who want an easy, relaxing story to half pay attention to while they clean or mow the lawn. This book demands your full attention. If you are like me and hate reading books in the second person, don't let that deter you here. This may be the first time I have ever seen that perspective used so well.
Harrow is not Gideon, and this book is not the first book. Prepare to feel your brain hurt and to question your own senses and understanding of past, present, and future events, just as Harrow feels her own sanity slip away throughout the story. If this also makes you hesitate to read this book, then let me reassure you that it contains all the wit, the jokes, the absurd and the wildly entertaining action of the first book. Don't miss this one. The narrator performs the same excellent performance as the first, really hitting some complex nuances of dialog and carrying the thick, sometimes almost too luscious descriptions of this crazy world the author has created. 5/5 across the board!

Who needs Ambien when I've got a book like this?
While I enjoyed Gideon, this sequel centered around an amnesiac Harrow is incredibly difficult to drudge through. I found myself having to go back because I would get bored and stop paying attention, or fall asleep and wake up chapters later.
I could go on and on but it wouldn't be worth writing it all down. Just know this novel isnt nearly the same quality as its predecessor. Only make this purchase if you're okay with a weaker story and significantly weaker writing.

Brilliant in a completely different way than 1st
Never read a sequel less like the original. I'm short on time, but for now suffice it to say that I loved it. It ties up more loose ends from Gideon than I realized were left to be pulled, and I only have the vaguest of ideas of where the next book will go.

What a mess
The first book was really good. This was not. The first 3/4 of the book is like being in the mind of a drunk schizophrenic dementia patient. I'm pretty sure this was deliberate but its a miserable experience for the reader/listener. The last part of the book explains the first and isnt bad but doesn't make up for the unenjoyable time spent on the first 3/4 or so.

I hate this book
I bought the actual book first. but it just sounded like gibberish, so i also bought the audiobook. I was thinking maybe that way I could get around the way this is written better, that is not the case. I have a headache and at chapter four I want to give up. I loved the first book so much I gifted one to a friend of mine, but it was much easier to read then this second book. I'm so dissapointed.

More Gideon, less everything else
I spent the whole book waiting for Gideon to reappear. finally she did, and there were some parts that reminded me of why I lasted through this second book. The first book was so good that I was sure this would come together in the end. unfortunately, it did not. it was a bit like Dead Astronauts meets Gideon the Ninth, with all of the confusing parts of the former, and not enough of the snark of the latter.

This book is so good! On track to be my favorite of 2020 (no surprise there—Gideon took 2019). More space and less horror than the first, and with a mass of psychological thrills! UGH!!! Beautiful, wonderful, thought-provoking. Sooo good. Ready for the third.

Bemused
I really enjoyed the previous book, and I did finish this one, although most of the time I had absolutely no idea what was going on. I was ok till half way through and then... lost. I don't want an author to explain everything, I'm usually quite happy to draw my own conclusions and figure out the gaps. But this was bonkers. I had no idea which people were actually alive and which were ghosts, or inhabiting someone else's body, or which bits were memories or happening in the present. The great writing - clever and funny - kept me listening but I skipped an hour at the end because I was totally flummoxed and didn't enjoy it enough to go back and reread the last third or more, especially since I had no idea where the essential information might be.
So - good writing, good characters, really enjoyable narration but a confusing, convoluted and taxing story.

Excellent reading of an excellent book
Moira Quirk absolutely nails this reading. Superb, engaging story, addictive plot, flawless performance. A fast-paced and intricate sci-fi thriller with some of the most vivid and realised characters in modern writing; a combination of savvy millennial in-jokes and complex literary allusions, plenty of bathos, and some emotional gut punches that leave you short of breath.

Disappointing second album
I absolutely loved Gideon the Ninth, and devoured it in a couple of days. Sadly, I just cannot say the same for this second installment. It's confusing from the start, with second person narrative and beginning at a point so much further on than the end of the first book that readers are left to wonder if there's been some mistake and they've missed an installment.
The charm of book one was mainly due to Gideon, her journey as a reluctant Cavalier and her developing relationship with Harrow. There's none of that in this book. Only a few hours in after a couple of months and I've given up. Harrow just isn't a strong enough character to carry her own full book.

Disappointing second book
After a great first book I was expecting the same quality. Unfortunately, this book has no tempo, It tries to mix what is happening with what our hero remembers as the truth from the first book. You simply can't listen to this straight after finishing the first one.
This reminds me of any successful TV series, where for the second season they start adding fillers and flashbacks to drag the story on for multiple more seasons. As a result, this book has multiple chapters with zero value to the story. We have an exciting necromantic story in space and the author stops the plot development with imaginary scenes about people having slow irrelevant conversations in between. I lost all respect for the author for agreeing to publish this. Almost every second chapter was a skip for me.

Requires you listen carefully, well worth it.
Requires a intimate knowledge of first book to be understood even a little.
Multiple narratives are interwoven and may be difficult to follow if you are distracted but well worth the very human and endearing characters in this necromantic setting.
As the second book in the series, it might not have the same spark as the first, where the world is introduced and discovered by characters and readers alike. This second book however pulls the narrative rug from under the reader, seeding pieces of a puzzle in chapter as understanding is slowly rebuilt. This might not be to everyone liking, but if you like the world from the first book, pay attention, stick with it and you will be rewarded.
The Third book will hopefully raise the crescendo of this trilogy to its deserved conclusion.

Enthralled
I decided to listen to this despite a few bad reviews, and I have to say I was skeptical at first. A few chapters in, I was enthralled. The author takes you on a mind bending journey where you question everything, and leaves you just enough in each chapter to begin to peace together what has happened/happening. Bear with it because it will all become clear in good time!
I also have to say the narrator is the best I have ever had the joy to listen to, the character voices are flawless, and the comedy timing is spot on!

Should you read this? Of Corpse!
Muir tries some innovative story telling with 2nd person perspective and unreliable narration, but doesn't quite stick the landing. The reveal comes off as a relief rather than a revelation, but the combination of standout characters and excellent world building make for an enjoyable ride.

Loved it
I kept putting off listening to it because I was hyping it up too much and wanted to listen to it only when I could fully pay attention to it. I eventually just made the time to fully pay attention to it and finish it and I wish I had done so much sooner. I love the world the Tamsyn Muir has created and Moira Quirk is the perfect narrator

Just as good as the first
Muir is brilliant - the second installment brings new characters and new mysteries, with plenty more twists and turns.
Quirk's narration, like the first book, brings the characters to life in such a wonderfully compelling way - truly brilliant performance.

5 star listen
They chose the perfect narrator for this story. The plot is so complex and at times confusing, but so worth sticking it out.

My new favourite
amazing in diverse representations and wonderfully written characters. the themes of a subtle fantasy mixed with scifi was enthralling and the direction of character relationships was well written.

Entrancing complex, nuanced and sometimes funny
Great imaginative leap into a sci-fi necromancy. Characterisation is superb, dialogue a poetry of the mundane and metaphysical, imagery a florid arrangement of gore. Compelling.

One Flesh One End
I love this book can't get enough of the locked tomb series, the start is a bit slow only because it's building the base up for everything epic that happens after chapter 30 worth it.
