Publisher's Summary

An eerie, windswept island off the coast of Maine becomes the site of a double murder and a disappearance in the next thriller from bestselling author Paul Doiron.

A call for help from a former colleague leads Maine game warden investigator Mike Bowditch and his girlfriend Stacey Stevens on a sea kayaking trip to a research station far off the coast. Stacey spent summers interning on the island, a sanctuary for endangered seabirds, and they are shocked by the atmosphere of tension they encounter when they come ashore. The biologists are being threatened and stalked by a mysterious boatman who they suspect is trespassing on the refuge late at night. And now the sanctuary’s enigmatic founder, whose mind has been slowly unraveling, has gone missing.

Camped on an islet for the night, Mike and Stacey waken to the sound of a gunshot. When they return to the refuge at dawn, their darkest fears are confirmed: two of the three researchers have been brutally murdered and the third has disappeared, along with the island skiff. Mike’s quest to find the missing man leads to a nearby island owned by a world-renowned photographer and his equally brilliant wife. The inhabitants of this private kingdom quickly close ranks, and Mike increasingly comes to believe that someone in the village knows more about the killings than they dare admit.

With no one to trust and miles from shore, Mike Bowditch must stop a ruthless murderer determined to make sure a terrifying secret never sees the light of day.

The author ruined the series

Why must everything contain left wing BS? Why can’t we just have a good story. The author has turned Mike into a SJW, woke liberal. Like everything else, we have to have racism injected into the story. This will be the last book I purchase from this author. The narrator was fantastic.

Islands

Who knew Maine had so many islands? Terrific story. Loved all the characters and what a suspenseful plot. The books just keep getting better. Mike and Stacy are quite the team.

This series gets better with each book!

I have been a fan of this series from book 1 and enjoy the development of each of the characters intertwined with the latest who done it. Doiron paints a brilliant picture of each scene, from the breathtaking beauty of main to the emerald eyes of Stacy, you can’t help but travel each characters’ path as the story progresses. I also appreciate that he is able to keep each book unique both in location and plot and does so without resorting to crimes ripped from recent headlines. Hatchet Island provided all of what I enjoy about this series - vivid depiction of the islands interspersed with natural and local history of the area. The plot was equally fresh and adding Stacy to the mix certainly made Mike’s latest adventure even more interesting. Of course, Henry Leyva will always personify Mike and all the characters in these books - he does a remarkable job transitioning from one person to the next without missing a beat! I love listening to him!

Very, Very Good,!

This is best book in the series which is hard to say when one considers how good the other books have been. The concept and plot were excellent but what made it so excellent was the way that the characters and scenes were given such life. It was so easy to close my eyes while listening to the narrator and be transported to the Maine costal Islands and bevome a part of the narrative. Awesome book!

Best Story yet

Another great chapter in Mike Bowditch's career. Glad Stacy is back in Mike's life along with Shadow.

everything you want in the continued advetures.

If you like the Joe Pickett series this is the author for you
the writing ability to put you in the adventure and everything you would see make the story really come to life. You learn alot of wilderness survival and appreciation.

Not his best, reader not great

Not as well written were earlier novels in the series. Narrator irritating; gives a whiny tone to all of his female voices. Would do better not to attempt different voices, but just to read it straight.

Not my favorite

This was the weakest of his books.
And after all these books Leyva is still woefully inconsistent about differentiating between the characters. Too bad because otherwise he's an excellent narrator.

Want to know what Maine is like?

Every bug, every plant, the smells even the weather is brought out in an amazing mystery novel. King Paul has done it again with his Mike Boatage Maine warden series. Look forward to more.

Absolutely wonderful!!!

This is one of my favourite series
This latest adventure really left me guessing who did what and how Mike would get through and figure it out
If I had one criticism it would be it needed more Charlie Stevens, but that wouldn’t have fit in the story’s timing and setting

Doiron makes things feel so atmospheric, I mostly listened to this book driving around Western Australian mining areas in the desert, but could totally see and appreciate where the story was
I feel like I know a bit more about Maine with each book
