When linguist Andrew Dennison is yanked from his bed by the Secret Service and taken to a top secret facility in the desert, he has no idea he's been brought there to translate the words of an ancient demon. He joins pretty but cold veterinarian Sun Jones, eccentric molecular biologist Dr. Frank Belgium, and a hodge-podge of religious, military, and science personnel to try and figure out if the creature is, indeed, Satan. But things quickly go bad, and very soon Andy isn't just fighting for his life, but the lives of everyone on earth…

Story
It was supposed to be a harmless camping trip. Six wayward teenagers who'd run into trouble with the law, and their court-appointed guardians, Sara and Martin Randhurst. Three nights on a small, deserted island off of Michigan's upper peninsula. A time to bond, to learn, to heal. Then Martin told a campfire story about the island's history. Of the old civil war prison hidden in there, and the starving confederate soldiers who resorted to cannibalism to stay alive. Everyone thought it was funny. They even laughed when Martin pretended to be dragged off into the woods.

Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

Publisher's Summary
At Butler House, a series of grisly murders over a century have led many to believe it's haunted. To one scientist, it's the perfect place for an experiment in fear. Eight people, each chosen because they lived through a terrifying experience, are offered a million dollars to spend one night at Butler House. They can take whatever they want with them - religious items, survival gear, and weapons. All they need to do is last the night.
But there is something evil in this house. Something very evil...and very real. And when the dying starts, it comes with horrifying violence and brutal finality. There are much scarier things than ghosts. Things that will kill you slowly and delight in your screams. Things that won't let you get out alive.

Too Gory For Mr
What did you like best about Haunted House? What did you like least?
The basic plot sounded good. I understand there are a number of books in this line, but it did say this is a stand alone, so I decided to give it a try. While the story was good enough that I wanted to know how it ended, some of the scenarios were just over the top gross.
Would you be willing to try another book from Jack Kilborn? Why or why not?
I don't think I will be listening to anymore because I like thrillers, suspense and the illusion of what is happening. Most of the time, a little left to the imagination isn't a bad thing. Leave the gore out and then I would probably enjoy the storylines.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The narration flowed well and the characters were brought to life with the emotion matching the scene.
Did Haunted House inspire you to do anything?
To read the reviews a little closer next time.
Any additional comments?
Good story, and if you don't mind some story with your torture books, then go for it. Otherwise, expect a few stomach turning moments.

Entertaining
If you could sum up Haunted House in three words, what would they be?
Entertaining well-performed interesting
Who was your favorite character and why?
Tom - I just found his character amusing, down to earth, and honest
Which character – as performed by Rob Shapiro – was your favorite?
Mathison
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I wasn't able to listen in one sitting because of the length, but I listened to it daily consistently about four days.
Any additional comments?
I didn't find the story horrifying, although there were some moments that made me wince, but it kept my interest, and even though there were scary things going on, the comedy that was injected through out made it more palatable.

Not scary - just gross
I couldn't finish this it was just too much. I love scary ghost and slasher books but this was too over the top. There's no suspenseful build up to allow a scare - just one graphic scene to another.
I tried to finish it but couldn't - not enough storyline to hold it together. If you like gory & bloody you'll love it!

Not what I expected but pleasantly surprised
First, the narration was superb. A great narrator can make a good book a great listening experience and a bad book tolerable to the end. This was my first Rob Shapiro book and I intend to explore more of his work. He is indeed a great narrator.
Second, I was a bit disappointed in the overall story because the story was not what I expected. I will be careful here not to drop any spoilers. On the other hand, what the story was entertaining. So it took me on some unexpected twists and turns that were a net positive.
I’ve had a lot of trouble finishing books lately because of poor quality writing and narrating. I finished this one in 3 days (which is pretty quick for me). This was my first Jack Kilborn book and there was clearly some history to each of the characters from his previous books. But enough of their stories were woven into this one to adequately develop them so that you care about them (or hate them as the case may be). I have a few other books in the queue, but I’m curious enough about some of the characters in this book that I might have to buy their stories as well.
While the plate wasn’t what I thought I was ordering, the meal was delicious. Everything else I’ve consumed in such a short period of time was worthy of 5 stars. So I can’t in good conscience leave anything less for this book.

Move Over Jackson and Matheson
The 21st Century Version
Shirley Jackson started it in 1959, Richard Matheson updated it in 1971 and now Jack Kilborn the dark side of J.A. Konrath has brought the haunted house story to the 21st Century. Like most Kilborn stories expect some gore, some sex and a lot of fear. Right from the start, my hair was standing on end due to the opening scene. This is not for the weak. This is scary.
Fear
Stephen King is one my favorite writers, but don't expect anything like that. Even King's dark side, Richard Bachman, never wrote anything this scary. I like King because of his character development. I like Kilborn, because he takes you right to the edge. Konrath is famous for his humor, mixed in with his gore and scary, but until the last hour, Kilborn does not let up on the fear, at times it is very intense. (no comic relief). Fans of his earlier works such as Afraid, Endurance and Trapped will recognize some of the characters, as the survivors are brought back for this. Reading the earlier works are not necessary to enjoy this. If you do enjoy this you will want to go back and read his earlier works. The gore is too much for some of the reviewers but this is not splatter porn or gratuitous. There is mutilation, amputation, burning, torture, etc. You have been warned.
The Sale and Relevance
So glad to see a Kilborn book on sale. Browse Fiction/Horror and out of the top 20 books, eleven are King books, out of the top 50, twenty five are King books. Once again I love Stephen King, but he is not the only one who writes horror. Another reason for Horror to be it's only category, with sub cats, so others will notice the other writers.

Terrifying!!!
What did you like most about Haunted House?
Relentlessly scary and didn't let ya go for one minute!!!
What other book might you compare Haunted House to, and why?
Incomparable for all the right reasons!
What about Rob Shapiro’s performance did you like?
His voice is perfect for the story!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Several, when the individual characters REALISE they are survivors and can beat the evil that lies within the house!! When Sarah and Frank get together at the end. :)
Any additional comments?
A great horror would recommend to any of your customers interested in the horror genre.

one word, pathetic
First of all let me get this out of the way and then I’ll review this book. Words tumble from mouth ergo they are spoken and therefore said so why oh why oh why do authors have to always state the obvious by stating that ‘he said’ and ‘she said’? this we already know. What we need to know is the manner in which dialogue is spoken. was it shouted? Screamed? Repeated and so on. that we hardly ever find out and this book is pretty much no exception to the laziness which afflicts authors the whole world over and more often than not it masquerades as ‘good writing’. Okay then rant over. Now for the review. I liked this book in the beginning. Plenty of fear and suspense but then close to the end it became lame and predictable so where once it might have been worth three stars it has only one because it is pathetic and lame. The naration is pretty good though except for the really bad English accent but i can live with that. Will I keep this book? Well i read it so what’s the point in returning it now I ask sorry I mean, I said.

Nothing really happened until chapter sixteen or seventeen, after that the story went at a pace. The good guys were very likeable, and I couldn't wait to see who survived. The narrator Rob Shapiro was excellent, and really brought the characters to life, for this reason I will try another Jack Kilborn, but hope I don't have to wait until half way through the book for the action to start.

10 mins in and so far, dreadful....
What a load of old tat! I need nine more words ... What a load of old tat! ( an English expression meaning worthless none sense.)

By far the best yet
There is nothing in this audiobook that I could fault and speaking of the word fault the entire narration as well as the storyline is brilliant to a fault ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Love love love this!
You should probably read Origin, The List, Afraid, Trapped and Endurance before you read this, because there are survivors from each of those books in Haunted House.
I went into this with some reservations... in fact I put off reading this for several years, as I wasn’t sure if the author would kill off one or all of the characters I’d grown attached to from one of his other stories.... also I didn’t know how putting a bunch of characters from different stories would play out, I tend to hate ensembles.
But I am so so so glad I took the chance! It is a great book and I wasn’t disappointed. I particularly loved Frank and also Monie was so cool!!!
