Publisher's Summary

An English teacher is gaslit by his charismatic high school bully in this tense story of deception, manipulation, and murder.

Single father Todd is relaxing at the beach with his son, Anthony, when he catches sight of a man approaching from the water’s edge. As the man draws closer, Todd recognizes him as Jack, who bullied Todd relentlessly in their teenage years but now seems overjoyed to have “run into” his old friend. Jack suggests a meal to catch up. And can he spend the night?

What follows is a fast-paced story of obsession and cunning. As Jack invades Todd’s life, pain and intimidation from the past unearth knife-edge suspense in the present. Set in a small town on the New England coast, Conner Habib’s debut introduces characters trapped in isolation by the expansive woods and the encroaching ocean, their violence an expression of repressed desire and the damage it can inflict. Both gruesome and tender, Hawk Mountain offers a compelling look at how love and hate are indissoluble, intertwined until the last breath.

Eh

It didn't go anywhere....it was just one tone. Good twist in the middle and then....didn't resolve anything.

Overall not impressed.

:::ADMONITION:::

There are just a few truly beautiful works, from film to fine art, that should be heralded and abandoned completely. This is one of those works, I've never been brought so completely into madness and depression. This book scares me, haunts me. This book is beautiful but this review is meant as a warning; be sure you can mentally handle a true dissent.

After this book I'll be looking forward to anything written (or narrated) by Conner Habib, but I'll be researching it carefully before ingesting it.

Depressing

It was depressing which I can handle, then just plain gross which I can't. And this turn was before the midway point. Decent narration, decent writing, but horrible story.

Thrilling and sickening

A phenomenally written and preformed story that had me on the edge of my seat for its entirety.

Great debut

I have been following Conner Habib on Twitter for a while and was excited to get Hawk Mountain. I picked the Audible version to here his story in his own voice. I was not disappointed. It was well done and had me both wanting to hear what came next and being creeped out by the main character’s behavior. This was a great debut for Conner Habib.

Buckle Up

I'm constantly listening to podcasts/books. After finishing Hawk Mountain, I spent days in silence.

Decent Story

Something okay to pass the time. Thought it would be a more compelling story than it was. Good performance though.

Couldn’t put it down

Gripping, compelling, haunting and above all extremely well written. I don’t write reviews a lot but I just want more people to know about this book

THIS. BOOK. Y'ALL.

I don't think I've blinked since starting this book. HAWK MOUNTAIN is one of the creepiest, most intense, terrifying books I've read in a long while. And I'm considering starting it over.
