One of the worst narrations
Ok, I've now read (actually listened to) the first two books in this series. I hope the narrator is a friend of the author otherwise a very poor choice was made as to who should read these books. I listen to hundreds of audiobooks each year and I feel sorry for authors whose works are ruined by a bad narrator. Damien Boyd is one of those authors.
On the other hand, narrators can only work with the words they're given. This series, at least so far, has no character development at all. We know little about Dixon or Jane. It's hard to develop a liking for characters with no depth. The only one I care about is the dog.
I read the second book only because I bought it before reading the first book. I don't plan on reading more.

Over the top, bad narration.
I am returning this book. The narrator is bad. The main character (Dixon) talks in a bedroom voice so low it is sometimes hard to hear. The women characters are all breathy, like Marilyn Monroe. The other males are over the top caricatures.
The bad narration makes a slow, story even worse. I don't care to listen to see what happens.

Excellent crime story
Head in the Sand is Book 2 in the 5 novel Detective Inspector Nick Dixon series. The story is an interesting one of multiple decapitated heads of people found in golf course sand traps with the bodies found elsewhere. The problem is finding a linkage among the victims beyond that all worked in the medical field.
Napoleon Ryan's narration takes some time to become accustomed to. It's not because he is British (I've lived in the UK and am very accustomed to the various British accents). Ryan does different voices well, but he does tend to over perform a bit.
I look forward to listening to the final three books in this series.

Agonizing
I made it to chapter 4 only because I was on a long drive. The narrator uses a monotone for the main character with a lilt at the end of every sentence for every scene even ones where gravitas or emotion would be appropriate. Female characters sound breathy no matter what the scene requires. I thought the story line sounded promising and I was looking for a new series. Silly me for buying this and another one in the series. So even though I spent money on them I cannot endure another minute

Off with their Heads
The second in the series is just as good, or better than the first, and DI Nick Dixon has his work cut out for him when a severed head is found in a golf course sand trap. Stopping a golf tournament, leaving the locals in an uproar, DI Dixon locks down the scene and begins his investigation. He soon finds that this isn’t a single incident, but a serial killer dating back to the 1970s. Determining what ties the murders together, and why the killer lops off the victim’s heads, leaving the bodies in one place and their heads in another is a puzzle, for sure. Each installment of the series gives us more opportunity to learn about DI Nick Dixon and his girlfriend, DC Jane Winter. The fact that Dixon has a reputation for ruffling feathers at the police station, but also for solving difficult cases, makes for interesting listening. Excellent book and resolution. I will be going on to the next in the series.

Nick Dixon has HIS head in the sand
The story is so-so, engaging in some ways but oh so irritating in others, D.I. Nick Dixon is a diabetic, who, it seems, is so forgetful that he has 'diabetic episodes' whilst behind the wheel of his land rover and thinks nothing of hitting parked cars and driving off without reporting it (because he'd lose his job if it were discovered). He also seems to be very lucky in that his boss does not mind him carrying on an affair with a colleague which is not particularly realistic in the British Police Force.
Nick Dixon also appears to be somewhat of a genius in the detecting game, whilst all of his colleagues, his girlfriend included, appear to be simpletons. Jane, his D.C. girlfriend, comes across as rather dense as every time Nick raises a point she either repeats it or asks, what is that, what does that mean or, how did you think of that, often doing both.
The narration is an interesting mix of soothing voice, mispronunciation and female characters that all sound like the same simpering idiot. I have a real problem with this one, Mr Ryan has a good range of male voices, he is pleasant to listen to but his female voices all sound the same.
In summation, I shall not be bothering with books 3 and 4, I have already read book 1 on my kindle and enjoyed it reasonably well but I'd hesitate to recommend this book, it does have an interesting story line but fails somewhat in the overall presentation and ends rather abruptly leaving you wondering if you've missed something.
Update to this review, the later books in the series have a different narrator and are much more entertaining all round.

Great story, poor narration.
This was the second Damien Boyd story I have heard and enjoyed, and I had decided to listen to the stories in sequence. The previous narration I had heard was very good (book 10), but the female narrator in this audiobook is totally unbelievable and has the same voice for Jane and other female characters. Having said that, I intend listening to more of Damien Boyd's gripping stories which are set in a part of the county which is close to my home.

Dull
This book has the potential to be a page turner (figure of speech) but it's just dull.
There are a whole world of unnecessary details ... Explaining how you sign in to a home and that you wrote you registration really doesn't move the plot along.
And the performer/reader has a fairly flat voice - it feels like he's trying to make it sexy and husky but really it seems to lack emotion and again is just dull.
I wouldn't recommend any of this authors books!

The books are brilliant. Well crafted dectective novels that I’ll read again. The narration by Napoleon Ryan is a disaster though. Reads the story in the same voice of the main character which is bad enough but apparently all the women in his world are Essex airheads.

Ok as a free listen, wouldn’t buy it though!
Same voices for all females and same voice for all males, awful narration! Characters very 1 demential, and flat. This is absolutely nothing special, but very ok to listen too while shopping or cleaning or walking in the park! I certainly wouldn’t buy any of these books, but are perfect for freebies!

I have no issue with the story but.......
Good police yarn and particularly interesting if you know that area of Somerset, BUT the female characters are given such pathetic , simpering voices in this reading - it spoilt the whole story

Not bad
Best part of this is the cover. The narrator Napoleon Ryan is good. He does woman’s voices very well. The actual story is pretty good, but I did get bored.

Excellent crime series.
Brilliant! Interesting twists and turns to find the serial killer, only to realise almost too late who the true killer is.
Fantastic narration.

Getting better, nice fresh story lines from this author
Second book in series and Damien Boyd is getting better, he has fresh story lines although writing and editing could improve. Some of the voices were a bit ridiculous, but like a spoof at times.i would like to see DI Dixon develop more and hoping this will happen in future books . A good crime listen
