Publisher's Summary

Brian Young’s powerful debut novel tells of a seemingly ordinary Navajo boy who must save the life of a Water Monster - and comes to realize he’s a hero at heart.

When Nathan goes to visit his grandma, Nali, at her mobile summer home on the Navajo reservation, he knows he’s in for a pretty uneventful summer, with no electricity or cell service. Still, he loves spending time with Nali and with his uncle, Jet, though it’s clear when Jet arrives that he brings his problems with him.

One night, while lost in the nearby desert, Nathan finds someone extraordinary: a Holy Being from the Navajo Creation Story - a Water Monster - in need of help.

Now Nathan must summon all his courage to save his new friend. With the help of other Navajo Holy Beings, Nathan is determined to save the Water Monster, and to support Uncle Jet in healing from his own pain.

The Heartdrum imprint centers a wide range of intertribal voices, visions, and stories while welcoming all young listeners, with an emphasis on the present and future of Indian Country and on the strength of young Native heroes. In partnership with We Need Diverse Books.

Storytelling From The Heart

This is definitely one of my all time favorite books which I will cherish and share with members of my extended family especially the younger members. Brian Young has done all of us a great honor to put out into the world this story which is not only a family story but one of deeper importance not only for his people and community but for all of us who pray to see our stories born into this world. Stories in our own voices, stories that depict us, stories that help us heal because they offer us hope. With much gratitude to Brian Young and to all who helped birth Healer of the Water Monster into the wider world.

Love this book

I loved this book so much, the performance from the voice actor kept me engaged. This book had me cheering, laughing out loud, and I even cried a few times. It warms my heart to know our Indigenous children can hear stories that relate to them in the mainstream media. Ahee hee for telling such a beautiful story!!

Very interesting!

I really enjoyed the spiritual aspect of this book. I also enjoyed the conflict between those who believe and those who don't.

Absolutely Amazing

The narrator helped make this story more! He worked with the author to make sure all the words were pronounced correctly. He brought the story to life. The story itself was also beautiful and empowering. Highly recommend.

Good

and important in many ways -- IMAGINATION ;) which we've been tending to damper in our children with the emphasis on intellect development even in preschool!! awareness and sensitivity that the world is a "living" world; respect for difference and cultural awakening. Thanks to all involved in writing and publishing this book and audiobook.

A book for both worlds

I am a Navajo mother and always reminding my children, "there are stories for everything." Mr. Young you have written a book that opened our imagination and helped the next generation to connect both the traditional and modern worlds. To see my children's wheels turning and connecting oral history to the present day was a wonderful feeling and made my heart swell. Thank you for a beautiful story!

Nizhoni Dine

I loved this. in this day with Covid. We are losing our elders to tell us these stories. I'm so happy to have this story, to bring light to our ancestral stories, to bring insight on our roles to our world now.
