Publisher's Summary

Brian Young’s powerful debut novel tells of a seemingly ordinary Navajo boy who must save the life of a Water Monster - and comes to realize he’s a hero at heart.

When Nathan goes to visit his grandma, Nali, at her mobile summer home on the Navajo reservation, he knows he’s in for a pretty uneventful summer, with no electricity or cell service. Still, he loves spending time with Nali and with his uncle, Jet, though it’s clear when Jet arrives that he brings his problems with him.

One night, while lost in the nearby desert, Nathan finds someone extraordinary: a Holy Being from the Navajo Creation Story - a Water Monster - in need of help.

Now Nathan must summon all his courage to save his new friend. With the help of other Navajo Holy Beings, Nathan is determined to save the Water Monster, and to support Uncle Jet in healing from his own pain.

The Heartdrum imprint centers a wide range of intertribal voices, visions, and stories while welcoming all young listeners, with an emphasis on the present and future of Indian Country and on the strength of young Native heroes. In partnership with We Need Diverse Books.

Nizhoni Dine

I loved this. in this day with Covid. We are losing our elders to tell us these stories. I'm so happy to have this story, to bring light to our ancestral stories, to bring insight on our roles to our world now.

we listen to audiobooks on our trips out of town or even on short distance drives on this one every time we got in the car my children asked for it to be played because they couldn't wait for the next chapter my daughter is 8 and my son is 9 so this age group connected tremendously with this book the relationship Dynamic of it was beautifully written and dealt with real life situations that we see in our community "thank you for writing this book "that is from my son Nathan who is a chunky brown skinned Native American Boy with long hair he thought this book was written about him thank you

Love it

I love this book highly recommend it to anyone who has an open mind and love for navajo culture, thank you Brian Young for writing the book and being a role model for the young youth and us adults who lost their way in today's society and technology. I grew up with stories of my Diné people and as I got older it slowly slipped away. as I listened to the book it was like an old best friend or reconnect with my roots and I am forever thankful for it. can't wait to see what you create again. my son and I thank you!!!
