Story
"A Rose for Her Grave" - the principal story of this collection - vividly recreates the cautionary tale of Randy Roth, a misogynistic sociopath from the Pacific Northwest whose rage was directed primarily at women and children. Addicted to his own greed, Roth exercised a powerful aura of control over his victims, using his ability to charm and boyish good looks to lower their defenses. By the time they saw the reality of the madness in his eyes, it was usually too late.

Great book on Brudos!

Publisher's Summary
An idyllic Hawaiian wedding held the promise of a wonderful future for handsome, athletic Chris Northon, an airline pilot, a confirmed bachelor-turned-devoted family man; and Liysa, an acclaimed surf photographer, loving mother, and aspiring Hollywood screenwriter. But few, including Chris, had seen Liysa's other side - her controlling behavior and dark moods, her insatiable hunger for money and property. And no one anticipated the fatal outcome of a family camping trip in an Oregon forest.
Liysa soon revealed herself as a victim of domestic abuse that culminated at the campsite, where she shot Chris in self-defense. But crime scene evidence led detectives to wonder if Liysa was a killer, not a victim. Her controversial trial stunned all who thought they knew her. A lifetime of sociopathic manipulations and lies had been expertly hidden behind her façade of perfection - as was her rage to destroy any obstacle to her ultimate happiness, even if it was the man she vowed to love forever.

Liysa Northon- It’s not a lie if you believe it
I admit I had a hard time getting through this book, not because of the writing or performance of the narrator, but because Liysa’s claims were so ludicrous. I once dated a pathological liar and the similarities between that guy and Liysa are chilling. They are the kind of liars that make you ask yourself “Wait. Am I the crazy one?” From her story of amnesia to the countless police reports of “stolen” items (including the computer found at a friend’s house after she shot her husband) Liysa is full of it to the point that I’m surprised she can stand up long enough to put her pants on. The sad thing is people like this who lie so much that they believe their own tales (as George Costanza once told Jerry when he had to beat a polygraph machine “Remember. It’s not a lie if you believe it”). I’m willing to bet my life that Liysa will go to her grave singing her innocence and her own praises about how she defended herself against an abuser to save her and her children. I really don’t care about her but it does bother me that now she’s a domestic abuse advocate so she’s using her lies to give other women guidance. That is not ok. So many women out there are abused terribly and this sends the message that if they do defend their own lives they are going to jail. The difference here is that Liysa drugged her husband and then shot him in the head when he was rendered unconscious. If that’s self-defense then maybe we should all have a license to shoot our spouses when they make us mad or say no to us. She’s a lying nut.

that psycho narcissist got away with murder. no doubt about it. a little slap on the hand and on she goes to do whatever horrible twisted tales she wants to. It makes my blood boil! she was no more an abused woman than I am. That in it's self just boils my blood. There are real woman out there that are physically and mentally abused by their husband, and they have an up hill climb to get away from it! it's narcissists like this beast that make it even harder for real woman to get help. I sincerely wish they would of locked her up for the rest of her miserable life!

Perfect Narration! Great book.
This book was wonderful to listen to with Cassandra Campbell narrating. The story was very interesting and very well written. Very good True Crime. So sad for the kids. My only issue with the story was Lisa’s motive. Why kill when you can divorce? She had prenuptial agreement that she would get full custody of their son. It’s so sad for her youngest son that she killed just to fulfill her own fantasies and her writings.
Def recommend this one.

A study in true psychopathy
if ever there was one, Lisa in this true account, is a poster child psychopath, not the kind who physically murders 2 or more people (but maybe, given time), but the more socially respectable variety that murders in other ways continuously. Like most self-important pigs, she is so worldly, her overall personage in life is really quite boring. A person all wrapped up in themselves makes a very small package. She was a bore!! But somehow 'intelligent' people got duped hand over fist by her immediate charm. Very scary. As Solomon said.."better to meet a bear robbed of her whelps, than to meet a fool in his (her) folly." Once her men are trapped, it is like a pill bug trying to escape a glue trap. Millions of dollars wasted. Years of precious time to be accounted as thrown away because of this selfish pig. So, while the story was good, a great editor could have cut out so much repetition and bland details. Chapter 9 almost had me wishing I had hair to pull out. Not the correct reading style for this kind of repetitive material. Must make bland things exciting by the correct reading method. Ann has done way better work.

infuriating
of the Ann Rule books I've read, i don't know of any that were as infuriating as this one. This woman and her disgusting behavior are disturbing. But to listen to how she destroyed this man's life, and then murdered him, and the horrible things she said about him... all because she has zero self esteem and wanted him to be as miserable as she was. Maddening.
But it's well researched, as Ann's books always are, and the narrator does a first rate job.
