Story
One of the great adventure novels of our language creates a most engaging central character, Nostromo. A picturesque man of action and popular hero, Nostromo lives to be "well-spoken of" by the citizens of Costaguana, the mythical South American banana republic where the story takes place. Around this figure, Conrad spins a story of revolution, politics, and racial conflict as complex as Nostromo, the man whose greatest enemy is himself.

Story
Typhoon is the story of a steamship and her crew beset by a tempest and of the captain whose dogged courage is tested to the limit. Captain MacWhirr was an ordinary man. However, when his steamer Nan-Shan blunders into a hurricane, he and his crew must pull together to survive. The steadfast courage of an undemonstrative captain and the imaginative readiness of his young first mate becomes a partnership vital to human survival as they are challenged from without by the elements, and from within by human doubts and fears.

Story
Written at the start of the Great War, when his son Borys was at the Western Front, The Shadow-Line is Conrad's supreme effort to open man's eyes to the meaning of war through the stimulus of art. In many ways an autobiographical narrative, this masterpiece of his final period relates the story of a young and inexperienced sea captain whose first command finds him with a ship becalmed in tropical seas and a crew smitten with fever.

Socrates is on trial for his life. He is charged with impiety and corrupting young people. He presents his own defense, explaining why he has devoted his life to challenging the most powerful and important people in the Greek world. The reason is that rich and famous politicians, priests, poets, and a host of others pretend to know what is good, true, holy, and beautiful, but when Socrates questions them, they are shown to be foolish rather than wise.

Story
In the late 1890s, Edmund Dene Morel, a young British shipping company agent, noticed something strange about the cargoes of his company's ships as they arrived from and departed for the Congo. Incoming ships were crammed with valuable ivory and rubber. Outbound ships carried little more than soldiers and firearms. Correctly concluding that only slave labor could account for these cargoes, Morel almost singlehandedly made this slave-labor regime the premier human rights story in the world.

James Joyce was an Irish novelist and poet. His short story "The Dead", the concluding story in Dubliners, often considered as one of the best works of short fiction, concerns a Christmas-time gathering in Dublin. Publisher's Summary
Although Heart of Darkness was one of the first literary texts to provide a critical view of European imperial activities, it was initially read by critics as anything but controversial. While the book was generally admired, it was typically seen either as a condemnation of a certain type of adventurer who could easily take advantage of imperialism’s opportunities, or else as a sentimental novel reinforcing domestic values: Kurtz’s Intended, who appears at the novella’s conclusion, was roundly praised by turn-of-the-century reviewers for her maturity and sentimental appeal. A classic.

Horrible performance
This guy has a great voice but reads like an 8th grade theater student. He puts really inappropriate, dramatic inflection on random words. He ignores the punctuation marks of (pretty much) every single sentence and adds his own. I had to restart this simple, short book 3-4 times and ultimately gave up. No point in finishing it when everything sounds like gibberish.

Unbearable, Painful, Pointless
I stopped listening after 5 minutes and decided just to read the book. It's a fantastic book but this reading, by this narrator, was the worst that I have ever heard. I just finished listening to Joe Morton reading Ralph Ellison's, "Invisible Man" and that absolutely phenomenal. Munro's reading here is everything that is rotten and lifeless. He should have been stopped after 1 minute. Why even offer this for sale? It was only a dollar and now I know why. I deserved this for being cheap so just leave the pain with me and look somewhere else. You deserve better.

Poorly matched
Alan Munro's husky baritone & halting drone do this story no justice. The stately pacing does lend gravity, but the whispered consonants are muddied over by the density of the vowels. Sometimes, Munro seems to have fallen in love with the grandeur of his own voice--throwing in pauses for style, rather than meaning. The story itself is wonderfully layered atmosphere, social criticism, and historical fiction. Plot is secondary, but is not missed.

What disappointed you about Heart of Darkness?
Alan Munro often seemed to mumble and there was an ironic tone to his voice that didn't fit with the text.
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Alan Munro?
I see there's a Kenneth Brannagh version. I wish I'd listened to that instead.

If your SatNav read you a book...
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
If the book had been read by almost anyone else
Would you be willing to try another book from Joseph Conrad? Why or why not?
Probably not, Conrad's writing style and subject matter didn't appeal to me.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
This was the most appalling reading of any audio book I've ever listened to, I mean it was really bad. I've genuinely listened to better readings from Librvox.
The narrators intonation was all over the place, he sounded like he was doing an incredibly bad impression of William Shatner with high's and low's all in the wrong place, pauses where there shouldn't be any and generally didn't pay attention to any of the punctuation in the text. It actually sounded like a computer programmed voice from the 80's as if Stephen Hawkin had decided to read us a story.
Normally I can live with a narrator even when they're not that great, but in this case, all I could focus on was how poorly the book was being read which completely detracted from the text. Poor job, spend a bit more money to get one of the better recordings if you want to stand a chance of enjoying this novella.
What character would you cut from Heart of Darkness?
Kurtz - he's hardly in it despite the fact that he's the main reason for the journey!
Any additional comments?
I feel cheated!

Avoid Alan Munro
I really don't understand why this narrator is so regularly employed. This book is close to unlistenable. He sounds very much like he is reading the words without any sense of comprehension whatsoever.
It's like listening to a Korean pop singer mouth English lyrics they obviously do not understand.
Awful. Avoid anything narrated by Alan Munro. Sadly, he's been employed to read a large amount of classics.
