War heroes aren't usually called out of semi-retirement and sent to the far reaches of the galaxy for a routine investigation. So when Colonel Carl Butler answers the call from an old and powerful friend, he knows it's something big - and he's not being told the whole story. A high councilor's son has gone MIA out of Cappa Base, the space station orbiting a battle-ravaged planet. Story
From the Audie-nominated narrator of The Martian. In eleven years' time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships' huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space. These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

World War Three wiped out the humankind. The planet is empty now. Huge cities became dust and ashes. Railroads are being eaten by rust. Abandoned satellites hang lonely in their orbits. Radio is mute on all frequencies. The only survivors of the last war were those who made it into the gates of the Metro, the subway system of Moscow city. It's there, hundreds of feet below the ground, in the vaults of what was constructed as the world's largest air-raid shelter, where now people try to outlive the end of days.

Publisher's Summary
The New York Times and USA Today best-selling series
They dive so humanity survives. Now they take to the sea.
In the fourth installment of the award-winning and USA Today best-selling Hell Divers series, the Sea Wolf sets out to search for the Metal Islands. Leading the expedition is legendary Hell Diver Xavier Rodriguez. After enduring for a decade on the poisoned surface, his survival skills will be put to the test on the dangerous open seas.
But storms, sea monsters, and the cannibalistic Cazadores aren't the only threat to X and his small crew. Their mission will uncover hard truths about the history of the war that left humankind stranded in the air for centuries. And the fate of those still living on the airships might very well rest on this fragile and perilous journey to find a new home.

More post-apocalyptic action
This book picks up shortly after the end of Deliverance with X and Magnolia aboard the Sea Wolf looking for the Metal Islands as a potential home on the surface. Of course finding that new home is really just an excuse that X used to justify this mission and his real agenda is to kill the leader of the cannibalistic Cazadores who live in the Metal Islands. X quickly finds out that the sea is just as dangerous as the land and the mission goes south quickly as all manner of unexpected obstacles need to be overcome. The action sequences come one after another and let up just long enough for the story arc to move forward as the true cause of the war that devastated the planet is finally discovered.
While things remain dangerous for X and Magnolia on the sea, up in the sky circumstances have gotten much better. Captain DaVita has two airships at her disposal and the quality of life for the inhabitants has greatly improved, although a settled life in the air isn't for everyone. X may have an ulterior motive for seeking the Metal Islands but Captain DaVita actually wants that new home down on the surface and she will do whatever it takes to make that happen, even risking that new found stability.
This book jumps from one action sequence to another and just when it was starting to feel like it might be mostly filler the story arc progresses just enough and the ending leaves you wanting more. I have grown to care about the characters and I can't wait for the next installment to see how it plays out. R. C. Bray has established himself as one of the best narrators around and he delivers another excellent performance here. His performance as X is spot on.

Best Yet!!!
Book 4 sees a change of pace for all involved.... Ha, only kidding, this is a Smith book after all!! The book starts with an absolute bang and doesn't let up. I devoured this as fast as I could and forwent sleep to finish!!
Literally within the few pages the ship that X, Magnolia and Miles are on is attacked by a giant monster! They have their hands full and things are extremely tense. The author makes it such a way that you can't see what's coming. My heart was in my mouth because I didn't know what was going to happen. In fact, through out the whole book, I was kept on tenderhooks because I had no clue where the plot was going!! There are so many twists and turns that it was impossible to tell.
Then we have the characters that are on the airships. At the end of the last book, they had managed to get another airship, Deliverance, and with that, life upon the ships have gotten better for all. Yet the Hell Divers are still needed and their latest dive is going to test even the hardest one! Certain things come to light when the Divers land on an island that will shake them to the core.
There is so much I want to say about the plot and what is revealed, and what happens to certain characters and what happens to other characters, but I can't!!!! I truly believe that this is Smith's best work to date. The pacing never lets up and the characters will squeeze your heart. So much is revealed and so much is set in place for the next in the series! You can just tell that everything the author does here is a set up for what's sure to be an explosive end!
This author has never failed to deliver an amazing read, and this one is no different. Its everything you could want in a book!! Jam packed with action, adventure, edge of your seat pacing, characters that will captivate you and a story you will fall in love with. Absolutely epic installment in one of my favourite series! Highly, Highly recommend.
RC Bray is phenomenal no matte what he narrates, but here he is even better. He brings the intense atmosphere to life and never lets up. He has such an amazing array of tones and voices and it's always easy to follow who's talking. Its like listening to a full cast performance.

At first I was all 😒, then I was all 😲
Perhaps because there was more time between book 3 and 4 than there was between 1, 2 and 3 for me, I wasn't super excited to jump back into this series. Don't get me wrong, I loved 1-3, and preordered 4 immediately, but I was just.. meh.
That didn't get any better as I started listening. I felt like 3 ended at a good place and 4 was just trying to drum up interest and suspense again. With X back in rotation, there's not much from the first trilogy to follow up on. His dynamic with Magnolia felt a bit weird (which I suppose is apt given he was used to being alone for a decade) and I didn't really find Katrina as captain more interesting than the role she played in book 3.
That said, there's a point where new discoveries and revelations are made and it becomes clear that Smith has a direction in mind for the next few books. It's not just one event in the book I can point to, but a sequence of them as well as information slowly dropped during those events that got me excited and intrigued again. I mean... we begin to get a clearer picture of humanity's past, and possible future here. Exciting stuff.
Like the others, this book ends on a comfy cliffhanger. It's a solid book on its own and most everything feels resolved, but there's definitely potential for more, and I can't wait to experience it.
It goes without saying that RC Bray did a phenomenal job as narrator.

A great day for Hell Divers fans!
There is plenty going on in this story and all of it will make your pulse race. X is back and he is neck-deep in trouble, battling horrific mutations both on land and sea. This poor guy just cannot catch a break.
Meanwhile, high above on the Hive and Deliverance, Captain DaVita is working on a plan to relocate the occupants of the airships to a relatively small, non-toxic area on the surface of the Earth that is currently inhabited by a psychopath and his minions. HD4 continues the author's legacy of crazy-great writing combined with top notch action scenes. R.C. Bray always does a spot-on job portraying these characters.

Can't Catch a break
X just can't catch a break!! As tough as he is the situation always catches him flat footed. But if I know X, he always has an end game and I am looking forward to Hell Divers V - They dive so humanity can survive. This is a good series to read, action packed, gripping and a page turner. If this were a movie, it would have to be seen as the Star Wars movies, to which we were all looking forward to the next release.

Of all of the series this one left me needed to find out what happened next, a gripping series of events with a belter of a cliff hangar.

Can't get enough.
Love this series. Can't get enough of it. Exciting on the edge of your seat stuff. Love the narrator too, he just brings the books to life.

Gets better and better
This series is going from strength to strength. It’s gritty action from start to finish. An amazingly well written book performed by one of the best narrators in the industry!
10/10!!!!!

Too slow
This book dragged out the violence but little to advance the story It shows poor imagination when the whole story is mainly violence the AI aspect could have been explored finding a mutual “friendly” group to join with against the Spanish group......not sure I will bother with the next book

One of Bray's best performances. NSS' is an incredible store writer. You need to listen to this series!

Living this author
This is my first series listening to this author, and I'm really enjoying it. I find the characters have depth, and as always RC Bray really brings them to life!

It's all about to kick off
Well here we are, at precipice. In the blue corner Humanity (aka THe HIve and Deliverance) to battle, in the red corner, the Cazadores for the metal islands. No prisoners, no quarter given, or expected. Bring on book five "Captives", cant wait.

excitement at every turn
Again, the story moves at a cracking pace with twists occurring at every opportunity. My issue is that a quite a few times I am saying "why would you do that ?" or "really?". Despite that, it is an exciting listen.

not the best in the series.
I kept turning it off and it took me longer than usual to finish. It seemed a bit lazy to me. I'll get the next one and chalk this up to a blip in the series. Bray is excellent as usual though.
