Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Publisher's Summary
The New York Times and USA Today best-selling series
Face the uncertain future without fear....
A year has passed since the Hell Divers defeated the machines at Kilimanjaro. The freed captives have settled into their new home at the Vanguard Islands, joining survivors from around the world. But extreme weather and failed crops have raised the specter of famine. Ships must push deeper into dangerous red zones, only to come back with less loot - and fewer soldiers.
When the Hell Divers discover a scroll on a raid, King Xavier is faced with a long-buried truth that threatens the future of his people and all of humanity. The Vanguard Islands are not the salvation the sky people thought them to be. To survive, they must venture through the Panama Canal and into the wastes beyond.
With the future at stake, the Immortal once again dons his armor. But there is a reason the great Cazador armies never returned from the canal, and this time not even the King of the Wastes is prepared for what awaits them.

Are you serious!
Just take my money for book 9 NOW! Mr. Nicholas, how dare you toll with my emotions and put me on a rollercoaster that's so fast-paced! I couldn’t stop listening from the moment I turned on the book. That's nearly 14 hours straight. Mr.Bray does another killer job bringing forth the characters from this epic saga!

How do these keep getting better?
I savored this book over the past two days, the new characters, new missions, and X leading humanity in a desperate act to save them from new threats. Honestly, this book felt like Hell Divers 1, in a good way. It was full of suspense, mystery, and characters you love and fear for. Hard to believe we're on book 8 and I still get the same chills that I did at the beginning of the series. I really believe this is the best installment yet. Amazing! If you haven't read these books, and somehow see this review, you need to dive in! This is one of the best and most unique apocalyptic stories of modern scifi.

Phenomenal Action Packed Series
The Hell Divers series is by far the best series I have listened to. Nichols Sandsbury Smith is a master writer that will take you on an amazing action packed adventure filled with colorful characters that will make you, laugh, cry, cheer for, and some you will hate ( in a good way). I really hated for this book to end and looking forward to Hell Divers 9.
RC Bray is an mastermind when it comes to narration. He breathes life to each and every character and really brings these books to life.

Just Excellent
I mean, at this point, I'm not surprised that Smith was able to not only write another amazing book but, eight books in, still knock my socks off. I should have gone into this story barefoot knowing he was going to blow them off.
Normally by eight books into a series, the surprises are over. The things that the main character(s) go through are pretty much a replayed versions of what they've already been through. That's not the case with King of the Wastes. Smith was able to create new and unique things in the later books (finding the Vanguard Islands for example) and then once they found them there was a whole new set of challenges. Now, a storm is blowing in and lots of other things seem to be happening at the same time.
King of the Wastes might be the longest book in the series but it felt like one of the shortest. I distinctly remember hearing Bray read "Epilogue" and I looked up from what I was doing and said out loud to myself "No... already". Now, this is 13 plus hours into the book already. I couldn't believe it was coming to an end. I'm used to the fast-paced action-packed stories that Smith writes, but this one stands out as one of the fastest and most action-packed.
We're introduced to new enemies and new challenges as well. The "monsters" that they come across and the backstories that Smith was able to sneak into this story were nothing short of amazing. I love that even eight books in I'm still learning more about the Wastes since the characters are still learning more. Add in the incredible narration by R.C. Bray and you have my favorite series. Hell Divers hasn't let me down yet and I think it's because they haven't let themselves down yet. They dive so humanity survives. And as long as they're still diving, these stories will keep getting better and better.

Phenomenal in my opinion.
I have listened to, and loved every single book in this series and love it more than anything. I can not get enough. This book made me feel all types of emotion and even made me audibly hoot for joy a couple times and get a choked feeling in my throat ever more so. Would give 10 stars if I could. Nicholas Sansbury Smith has created a fantastic universe and a lovable cast of characters. Also a few hatable ones (in a good way). I'm also convinced that R.C. Bray is a narrator God and I bet I'd even listen to the Bible on audio if he narrated it.
If you liked RC Bray and you like zombies try the Mountain Man series by Keith C. Blackmore, another favorite. Nicholas Sansbury Smith has many other great titles too!

Outstanding Series
This book doesn't give a lot if you haven' t read the previous books. The books are action packed. The struggle that King X has is to feed a hodgepodge of surviors. They have to find new supply sources as well as conspirators. Everyone has an agenda and few are aligned. This series is well worth the money and I am anxiously waiting for the next book.

Still a enjoyable ride.
After so many in the series the story writer maintains the essence and core well , little bits of diversity both add and subtract at the same time.
R C Bray is as always .......pretty well perfect.
Toast to X king of the wastes .......

Love it!
Every time I see that another one of these comes out, I keep thinking "it's got to be the last", yet another one always comes out a year later... and that never upsets me! This is easily one of the best book series I've read/listened to and I never get bored of it.

Disappointment
Used to love the series but it's turned into a money grab now. This book was a struggle to finish. R.C. Bray was the only thing keeping it going. Should of finished with the previous book.

Nicholas Sansbury Smith knows how to write an epic story. I am waiting and looking forward to reading the next chapter
