Publisher's Summary

Islamic State is here, all around us. There is no defence. Only attack.

On the Syria/Iraq border, a British hostage is beheaded by IS terrorists. When the executioner breaks down, he is led into a nearby tent, where a masked figure is waiting for him. This mysterious person is treated with a mixture of respect and terror. They call him the Caliph.

In Nigeria the British Ambassador and his young aide are kidnapped. A four-person SAS team is deployed to find him. The team includes Danny Black and Caitlin Wallace - an expert on West Africa. In Nigeria the team find devastation, and when they discover prisoners infected with the plague they realise they have uncovered a combined Boko Harem/IS plot to unleash a bio-terrorist attack.

The team must stop the terrorists and identify the Caliph before the deadly disease is released much closer to home.

Chris Ryan does it again

Military fiction at its best by a man who live and breathed it. Thanks Chris as always.

Oh Woe, what a mistake

No editor touched this book, repetitions, mistakes; arrive on a motorbike and leave in a car. The there is the breathy lip smacking narration. Awful, just awful. Needn't have been either. Such a mistake in such an amateurish way.

Well Worth the Wait

'High-adrenaline' is an over-used phrase when it comes to special forces novels, but in this case it is more than justified. I was pacing around the house biting my finger nails as I listened to the climax of Hellfire. I don't want to spoil it for you, but suffice to say there is plenty of cool action, great locations, unexpected twists and enjoyable friction between characters - just as we've come to expect from the Danny Black series.

Ok

Decent enough story. Narrator is poor. Quite a good trilogy overall. Easy going when in the car.

Awful.

Would you try another book written by Chris Ryan or narrated by Michael Fenner?

I would have to be desperate.

What was most disappointing about Chris Ryan’s story?

Narration and the poor use of regional accents and the stereotypical portrayal of Black as an uncouth, uneducated military machine.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

His use of regional and cultural accents not everyone from Birmingham speaks with a strong Brummie accent.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Improved my geographical knowledge of the Middle East.

Another great Chris Ryan story.

No one writes better thrillers than Chris Ryan. Brilliant from start to finish.
This has to be one of his best SAS books yet. 5 star.

Gripping!

I needed something to listen to whilst up late at night trying to persuade babies that they really wanted to be in their own beds. So good that afterwards I was kept awake as I followed the story long after the little one was back in bed! My only gripe is that it was over too soon.

Highly enjoyable action packed thriller

Any additional comments?

If you like Andy McNab, Stephen Leather, then Chris Ryan is the author for you. And Hellfire is just great, corny intro music and tinny telephone voices included. (For goodness sake these additional sound affects are not necessary, more often than not making you laugh rather than get further involved in the drama). Its not often that I have to fast forward on a particularly gory part, but Chris managed to succeed. Even I had a hard time listening about the serrated knife cutting through the neck. Yuck, gives a whole new meaning to carving the Sunday Roast!. And thank goodness Buckingham finally got his dues. And as for running a marathon? I cant help but wonder why anyone would want to put themselves through that, now thanks to Hellfire I have an excuse! Yup Im a fan, and enjoy Black Ops, SAS, spy type thrillers, there is always something comforting about the hero saving the day!

Previous narrator was better

Some very stereotypical accents. Irritating and Confusing. Very poor female voices and less at atmospheric than the first in this series. The voices didn’t seem to match the characters often. This all detracted from the story. Shame as very good story!

Annoying lead character and story.

Don't know what it is with Ryan, but the decision making in the story line is just weird and nonsensical and the protagonist is a hot head that no one tells to pull his head in and somehow gets celebrated after all the destruction from his stupidity? Buckingham is 100% right about him the entire time. The Caliph plot doesn't make ANY sense. Why do what he does given what he has to lose. Did he just get bored one day and decide to do all he does given the potential consequences on his long term goals? Nonsense. Really doesn't make any sense. The only thing I like is the narrator. But, last Chris Ryan book for me.
