Publisher's Summary
First published to critical acclaim in 1886, Robert Louis Stevenson’s mesmerising thriller is a terrifying study of the duality of man's nature, and it is the book which established Stevenson's reputation as a writer.
In this Audible Original drama Stevenson’s story is transported to modern-day London, and instead we meet Henrietta Jekyll and Eleanor Hyde.
Dr Jekyll, a charming doctor, explores the possibility of dividing the dark and light side of her personality, but in doing this she creates a monster, Eleanor Hyde. For many years she manages to live under the radar, keeping her dark secret unknown to those around her. However, gradually her evil side gains strength until Dr Jekyll is overwhelmed by Eleanor Hyde, to disastrous consequences. An exploration of human duality and forces of good and evil, this modern retelling is compelling and eerie and retains the disturbing nature of the original text.
Starring Holliday Grainger (Cinderella, My Cousin Rachel, Strike) and Carla Mendonça (My Parents Are Aliens, So Awkward).
Also starring Tim Bentinck, Bill Fellows, Hugh Fraser, Holliday Grainger, Clive Mantle, Carla Mendonca, Katarina Olsson, Miranda Raison and Hugh Ross.

Story
Is bourbon the quintessential American liquor? Bourbon is not just alcohol - the amber-colored drink is deeply ingrained in American culture and tangled in American history. From the early days of raw corn liquor to the myriad distilleries that have proliferated around the country today, bourbon is a symbol of the United States. This course traces bourbon's entire history, from the 1700s, with Irish, Scottish, and French settlers setting up stills and making distilled spirits in the New World, through today's booming resurgence.

Story
The tide is turning against the colonists in the Revolutionary War, and 18-year-old Elizabeth Morris cannot sit by idly. Quietly disdainful of her Tory parents, who drag her along to society events and welcome a British soldier into their home during their occupation of New York City, Elizabeth decides to take matters into her own hands. She realizes that, as a young woman, no one around her believes that she can comprehend the profound implications of being a nation at war - she is, effectively, invisible. And she can use this invisibility to her advantage.

In 10 lectures, award-winning historian Patrick N. Allitt transports listeners to England in the 1840s and 1850s. Our favorite moments from Henrietta & Eleanor: A Retelling of Jekyll and Hyde

About the Creator
Robert Louis Stevenson was born November 13, 1850 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Stevenson was sickly as a child, making school attendance difficult. When not being tutored at home, he spent his time reading and writing stories. While at Edinburgh University, he rejected his father’s wish that he become an engineer, declared himself an atheist, began wearing bohemian clothing, and embarked upon a writing career. As a poet and novelist, he achieved fame for stories that have delighted fans for over a century in print, on the stage, and in film. In audio, he is best known for the highly acclaimed and full-cast recordings of Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and also for the popularity of Kidnapped, Black Arrow, and South Sea Tales. He died December 3, 1894 in Vailima, Samoa.

Meh
I usually prefer single person narration, but the sound editing of this audiobook was nicely done and the actors did a good job of sounding cohesive.
Where it disappoints is in the story itself, which is told in such a way that the listener basically knows everything before the characters do. Added to the fact that the Jekyll/Hyde story is already so widely known, it leaves the listener in the frustrating position of watching a bunch of bumbling and incredulous (albeit well meaning) characters slowly drag their way through the events of the story, leaving little room for deeper analysis of the human condition.
What also strikes me as odd is several references to Hyde smoking weed and being stoned. That’s supposed to be nefarious behavior? Pretty laughable. It’s anachronistic in the time of the original novel, and old fashioned the present.

An OK retelling
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is one of my favorite pieces of classic literature, I've read the original multiple times, and I love everything about it. I saw this offered in my monthly Audible Originals list and decided to try it out, I expected something very unique, a crazy modern day retelling of the original story. Maybe I put my expectations a little too high for this one. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the performances, I think it does at least succeed at being a modern day retelling, but at the bare minimum. It hardly does anything really unique I feel with the original story, and there were times where I found myself thinking "Why didn't I just pick the original?"
If you are new to the world of Classic Literature and are a little intimidated by trying to go back and read or listen to those classic tales, this one is an easy way to get your feet wet.
If you are a more seasoned classic lit reader and expecting a nice twist on an old classic... Maybe skip this one

the performance of this story topped any other...
the performance of the story top any other performance of a story that I have listened to on Audible. There were sound effects there was audible context there was background music... It was like I was watching a movie but in a different way. Different from regular reading a book and even differ from regular listening to a book. I really enjoyed this and I never knew the story of Jekyll and Hyde, but I'm so glad that this is the one that crossed my path.

So much smacking of lips and drinking. This production was ridiculous and served no purpose. The characters are not likable, the action is dampened because it is told through letters mainly, and the reactions are not believable. This is useless.

A Modern Re-telling That's Stuck in the Past
When Audible get these modern re-imaginings right it can be spectacularly good, just check out the wonderful Romeo and Jude if you haven't already and need convincing. They can also do great gothic and ghostly stories like the Darkwater Bride. This though is a strange hodge podge of ideas and themes and struggles for identity. It is a classic story cleverly re-imagined with female protagonists and set in the current day, definitely an intriguing idea and definitely I thought worthy of spending some time with.
Unfortunately I felt that it fell short, and not just in terms of its brevity. Although it is set in the modern world you'd hardly know it from most of the writing and the soundtrack. The actors sounded much more like something from a Victorian gothic, the music more dreary than the promised eerie of the blurb and the whole story lacked any real kind of edge. It never finds its own identity or generates an atmosphere that grabs the listener.
Not everything has to be quite as edgy as the likes of Romeo and Jude or indeed be authentically gothic but this just falls limply in between the cracks somewhere and never manages to gain traction as a result. It's not awful by any means but Audible have created much better.

Not an inaginative retelling
An interesting idea that did not live up to its promise, nor use the full potential of audio. The main male character is rather anodyne, and his supposed gay relationship sounds entirely businesslike with no affection or intimacy. The entire second half essentially consists of three people together reading a letter from Jekyll/Hyde, with six or seven interruptions where they simply say "Gosh, I can't believe this, can you, I need a drink!" The sound effects are not good - all footsteps sound the same, whether indoors or out. Essentially this is a literal re-reading of the original Jekyll and Hyde, with changed names.

It just doesn't work
As a modern rework it fails from the start. A man sees a woman beat up another woman, apprehends her but when recounting the story to his lawyer partner says he didn't involve the Police as it was his word against hers but managed to get 1k payment from her by visiting her house and picking up a cheque. Later, the lawyer, when identifying the body of a second victim, tells the police officer he knows where Hyde lives and off they go together to the house and knock on the door. If you are going to do a modern retelling then do it. You can't set the scene in modern London with Victorian police and legal procedures. At this point I quit. Such a shame as it had great potential.

Stunning
This was superb, I enjoyed it so much! I just finished the original version on audible and l must admit, this was even better. So very enjoyable and everyone’s performance was fantastic. Thank you!
