Publisher's Summary

Marian Fletcher Blackley, Duchess of Endsmere, is on the run from the English Crown for killing her abusive husband...no matter that it was self-defense. She has only one safe place to go - the MacKinlay clan in Scotland, where her sister is the laird's wife.

War Chief Cameron MacKinlay has vowed never to marry after witnessing his widowed mother's grief. He has his lands and his clan, and that's enough for a good life. When one day a sprite of a lass comes running out of the forest with hounds nipping at her heels and an English bounty hunter not far behind, he feels compelled to save her by claiming the disheveled duchess is his wife. But he certainly didn't intend to marry her for real!

And now he'll do anything to protect her....

Contains mature themes.

Well balanced literary morsel

Steady pacing, solid characters and sense of family. Plot isn’t overly complicated but it’s satisfying. Not much to add beyond the official synopsis…it’s a lot of getting-to-know-you while overcoming trauma scenes with healthy doses of miscommunications and the ever looming moral/loyalty dilemmas with the bounty hunter/prosecution threat. Despite this less than resplendent summary, it got me in feels several times so it’s got that *something* that should make it worth your time.
Trigger warning for general battle violence, domestic abuse, and light discussion of off screen crimes such as sexual assault, rape, pedophilia and of course murder.

a nice story

I liked the story and I liked the narration. one of the things I really appreciated was that there wasn't a whole lot of in your face sex. don't get me wrong I enjoy the sex scenes, but sometimes a little bit left to the imagination is a good thing, and sometimes we don't need in-depth sex scenes at the very beginning of a book. so I liked this book for that reason and also because the author did a very good job of weaving everything together.

Beautiful Story

Family is where you find it and love breaks down barriers. The passion in the story had me hooked. It made me laugh and brought tears to my eyes. I loved the story line and the characters. It was definitely worth the credit!

Love story from the heart

This book had me laughing, sobbing, wincing, and swooning. The physical and emotional traumas were realistic in both the characters’ reactions and how they worked through them. There were a few loose ends but the strength of the characters made up for them. Very enjoyable!

Story of the Year!

Undoubtedly one of the best, most moving stories I have heard in a long time and that's saying something. Utterly delightful. Didn't want it to end!

thoroughly enjoyable

Needed a break from reality and decided to enjoy a romantic romp through the Highlands. This audiobook hit the spot!
Brave decision to have domestic violence as a backstory for the heroine. Handled with grace and dignity. Very much enjoyed seeing her come into her own and redevelop her sense of self-worth.
Swoon-worthy hero and well developed secondary characters.
The hero/heroine introduction was unique and quite creative.
While parts of the book were predictable, most were unique in their approach. The ending was the redemption I'd hoped to see.

Overall boring and narrator SUCKS!!!

I couldn't take the Audible narrator anymore! She is absolutely AWFUL to listen to!!! The storyline and honestly the main characters are seriously boring, but the reader just made it worse. I tried to keep going, but the main characters are portrayed as second best and beneath the Laird and the sister. Definitely lacking passion too! Cam isn't portrayed as very manly and more of an immature character.

Cute, but predictable.

The plot was pretty predictable, with no real twists to keep one guessing. The characters were memorable, and as multifaceted as this kind of story can allow. I wish the narrator had not taken such large breaths between sentences, but I got used to it by the end and was running it out.

Repetitive storyline/ pretty bad narrator

Narrator needs to learn how to breath unfortunately. I’ve tried to finish it but every time captured by her breath by the end of a sentence, tough to explain but writing though really disturbing while listening.
Also, storyline gets really boring. Same things repeated over and over. This book easily could’ve been 2 hr long at most. For me, it was waste of a credit unfortunately.
