Just a thought
I immediately became emerged in the story of Tara and Violet. The characters were so relatable and likable! The time frames were easy to follow and intertwined all the characters lives.
It provoked emotions, memories and I loved the bantering. It took me back to my youth and hearing my parents and relatives tell stories and banter back and forth. I could have just kept reading their story. I did however feel frustrated with the way the story wrapped up. Surely there could have been so many other ways to end it!

I've read all of her books and loved them all. As this one started out very slow and was awfully boring. Any other book and I would have quit listening, but this was Kathryn Hughes! I was a fan and this book had to get better!!!! It did get better, but only the last half. The narrator was great.

Wonderful story read by a fantastic narrator. I loved the characters, and wanted to know what happened to them as I progressed through each chapter. This is a glorious tale of love, life, family & enduring hope. Yep, it’s fair to say, I found this book pretty special. Never read anything by this author before, but I’m looking forward to trying another. Isn’t it lovely when you discover a new author to add to your list of favourites.

Gentle story of the lost years
I do like Kathryn Hughes books, she writes clearly concisely and there is no getting lost with her descriptions of all her colorful characters.
This is not her best book, but nevertheless still good.
It is set in 1978 and the modern day, moving back and forth with each chapter filling the gaps over the years.
She pulls in all the threads throughout and ties them neatly at the end. You can feel the emotions of each character as you follow them through the story.
Yes I would recommend as a lighter read.

Mixed feelings
Loved the majority of the book and the characters. Read very well by the narrator. Just a bit disappointed by the very end as felt it was rushed and incomplete. Also disappointed by what happens to 2 of the lovely characters. Never did find out what her last promise was which is the title of the book and still don't know who it is referring to! These are the reasons for 4 instead of 5 star review.

An engrossing beautiful story of life, family, love, loss, reconnection. I didn’t want this book to end as I loved it & the characters so much. Beautifully written. I’m looking forward to exploring more of the same author’s & narrator’s books.
The narration was impeccable, loved the different accents & voices, it helped make the characters come alive & easily distinguishable from each other.
