Her Mad Baron
What made the experience of listening to Her Mad Baron the most enjoyable?
Not only was the story steeped with emotional intrigue and inner battles the main characters had to face, it reflected the "emotional unattachment, distance" often seen between parents and children of that time period. Name and reputation were everything... and far more important that personal happiness or love.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Her Mad Baron?
I was touched by the mention of the harsh training Nathaniel had to endure as a child by his uncle in his effort to makehim a strong (proper, probably emotionally detatched) adult, and how deeply those actions affected his adulthood and relationship reactions. I can connect with the inner fear he experienced as a result of those actions. While researching my own family history I've uncovered many similar, harsh, emotionless relationships between parent and child. The abuse and harshness was a reality that broke my heart, but I know that not only emotional, but physical scars were left. Only a true, deep, calm reassuring love can eventually overcome such fears..
What about Bobbie Hudson’s performance did you like?
Bobby Hudson did a magnificient job narrating this book and bringing the characters to life! Very talented narrator for audio books. I adore audiobooks when the narrator is so talented. I admit that it is difficult for me to get enthused over narrators without a good cadence or voice inflection such as some of the early computer narrations. This one was absolutely wonderful! Kudos to Bobby Hudson for a fabuously talented job drawing the reader into the story by making Ms. Rothwells wonderful characters come to life.
Any additional comments?
I admit I had not listened to or read many other books by Ms. Rothwell before this, only shorter ones, but I have definately added her as one of my favorite authors and have already purchased more of her audio books to dive into. I'd easily recommend this book/audiobook, to friends by telling them how much I enjoyed this experience! : )

Creative and different!
If you could sum up Her Mad Baron in three words, what would they be?
I love Kate Rothwell's books because they are so unique and interesting. If you're tired of the same old Victorian romance and looking for something memorable and fresh, try Her Mad Baron, a sexy and witty romp.
What did you like best about this story?
Great dialogue and fun characters!
Which scene was your favorite?
When the heroine is breaking into the castle.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes.

Ok
Good premise. Seriously could have been really good but just got so boring. I can’t believe I am saying this, because I am not one to shy away from sexy times in a book, but these were just such boooring sexy times. The weird way they got it on in the middle of a hostage situation after knowing each other less than 12 hours (and while one or both were drugged during that 12 hours so not exactly quality get-to-know-you time) was just so unrealistic. Plus it was so unsexy. At one point she is thinking about his “thing”. Yes. That is the word she uses in her head. That she could feel his “thing”. And she spends so much time (pages upon pages worth) thinking about how she should be ashamed and she is an awful person for having sexual desire and her ex fiancé would be so disgusted with her for her sexual desires and Oh What A Terrible Person I Am for having sexual desires and I can never marry because real ladies don’t have sexual desire and a husband would despise her for her disgusting sexual desire..... blah blah blah See what I mean? If you managed to read all that, and are prepared for pages more of it, then this is the book for you.
But dang. I was so intrigued by the basic plot idea for this book. I can’t even understand how the author could take this plot and make it boring. So much navel gazing. So much drawn out boring conversations about completely unrelated stuff. I mean, could they have spent some time coming up with a feasible plan for escape before just starting with the sex and self-castigation about wanting to have sex with a prisoner thing? I don’t know about you, but if I am trapped in a hostage situation with my life in danger, I don’t think I would waste time in the first few hours ruminating on my failed past relationship, the fact that ladies shouldn’t enjoy sex or that this guy who has been a drugged prisoner for the last month + is OMG, so hawt! Priorities, people.
I had to stop reading. There wasn’t really anything offensive or anything. It was just boring waiting for them to actually do anything about the danger they were supposed to be in, and so unlike how any real person would behave that it was unrelatable. The narrator was fine, if a little overly prone to sound constantly on the verge of tears.

Not “sweet”
Sweet is such a namby pamby term for books that don’t depend on sex or complex characters for the action. “Clean” is another one. Anyway, Her Mad Baron is rife with situations and actions that could cause uncomfortable reactions to those subject to being triggered by mildly transgressive sex, opiate addiction, and emotional repression.
I reduced my overall rating due to anachronistic language and an unsatisfactory ending. The H and h had their HEA but at least one subplot was left hanging.

Interesting storyline
The plot was very interesting, and I really enjoyed the storyline, and generally liked the characters.
The character’s behavior usually seemed well motivated. Although, there were a copious number of sex scenes, even Compared to other books of a similar genre.
Anyway, especially in the beginning I felt like there was a lot of potential.
Unfortunately towards the end I felt like the book meandered a bit, and just when it felt like The reader might get answers to some of the mysterious happenings from early on, the book ended. When I say it ended, it stopped like it fell off a cliff. It was like the author hit some kind of deadline and the publishers literally snatched the manuscript out of her hand and just published it. No warning whatsoever! Lots and lots of plot details left hanging... maybe the author wanted to write a sequel?
Still a diverting listen.

Promising open, boring development
The author is very good at unexpected, interesting beginnings! The opening of the book is tender, passionate and interesting, which looks incredibly promising, but after the first turning point it transforms into the usual baron meeting shopgirl story. Sexual scenes are well-written but tedious, the building of characters and their relationship hardly seen. The MCs are irresistible to each other—I get that bit, but no need to say this again and again!
The narrator does an admirable job.
