Publisher's Summary

When her sister, Pippa, goes missing, Nella Freling tells her boss she’s taking time off from her job as a research librarian, hops in her sensible van, and heads south of the border to Montana. However, local police don’t seem too concerned about a missing woman living in her motorhome. So Nella will have to look for Pippa by herself, unless she can convince a highly recommended tracker to help her, but sadly the rude and angry cowboy won’t even listen to her at first.

But Nella can be persuasive.

The first time High Mountain tracker Fletch Boone laid eyes on Nella, her ass was stuck in his grocery cart. The next time was at the ranch; she was wearing mud head to toe. But when he catches sight of her a third time, hanging off a cliff, he can’t turn his back again. What Nella lacks in survival skills she makes up for in sheer determination. Unfortunately, neither of those is enough protection when bullets start flying.

Fletch has no choice but to jump in before the woman gets herself killed.

And that would be a damn shame.

Amazing Characters, Story & Narration🎧 Loved it!

Freya Barker wows me with another amazing romantic suspense novel set in her “High Mountain Trackers” series and like the first book, the story grabbed my attention right from the start and captivated it straight to the end. This story stands on its own but I highly recommend starting with the first book, “High Meadow”, not only is it a fantastic story but it is an introduction to the High Mountain Trackers, a specialized, mounted, search and rescue team, all former special ops, that said, everything you need to know for this story is in the descriptive details so you will not feel lost or like you missed something. Nella Freling is worried about her sister, who has been missing for close to two weeks. She takes some time off and goes to her last known location in Montana, she does not get much help from the local police, so she does her own investigation. Then she seeks the help of the highly recommended High Mountain Trackers, she had little luck at first but after a few mishaps she has the attention of Fletch Boone who finally agrees to help her. Fletch has kept himself distanced from most people except those in his team, he has his reason for not getting close to anyone or wanting a relationship and it was great to watch the walls he built around his heart crumble a little at a time. Nella is an independent woman and does not take no for an answer, she does not take direction very well either and does not take danger into consideration and she finds herself in it several times, while looking for her sister and trying to uncover what happened to her. I loved how everything played out in book, the story is wonderfully plotted with plenty of drama, heartfelt emotions, some angst, mystery, action, twists and turns, thrilling suspense and a fabulous romance. Freya Barker, thank you for another fantastic story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for the amazing narration, Freya Barker cast the perfect narrators to bring her characters and story to life. Desiree Ketchum and Connor Crais are superbly talented narrators and versatile voice artists. They have a complete understanding of the characters they portray, give each a voice that fits the character’s persona, sounding believable and just as I picture the characters to sound. Connor Crais plays Fletch Boone as the sometimes broody, most times level headed man. Desiree Ketchum nails it as Nella, grasps all her strengths and her persistence to not give up. Both were great performing the roles of the secondary characters too. They set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the character’s emotions and projected them into their performance and have you feeling every single one. These entertaining storytellers are a pleasure to listen to and their narration enhances an already fabulous story to another level. Thank you for another exceptional listen!

Good but production of audiobook is abysmal

Who ever thought they edited this audiobook is mistaken. The out takes in the performance we’re not edited out. There are also several blank spaces in the performance. It e Wally compromised the enjoyment of the book

Hard to Focus

I am a fan of Ms. Barker's books and I enjoyed the first one in this series. This one - not so much. Weak main characters. Editing is a serious problem in this book. Chapters out of order, repeated sections. It made for a confusing listen. Once the dog alerted to the barn fire -- and I was suddenly listening to a completely different part of the book AGAIN! I gave up. Certainly not up to this author's usual standard.

Another enjoyable book in this series

This is another older couple book, meaning late 30's and 40's. Boone is another tracker for High Mountain, but he does contract work outside of the team. When Nella tries to hire him to help her find her sister, Pippa, he avoids her calls. He's not keen on helping her. However, when she takes off on her own in search of her sister, Boone feels responsible and goes looking for her.

So many things happen in this book. There's the hunt for the sister. The love story of Boone and Nella. And the mystery of why campers and motor homes are going missing and the owners are ending up hurt or dead. I love the character of Nella in this book. She is full of grit and determination and like a dog with a bone. First to find her sister. Then to find out what happened to her motor home. However, Boone kinda peeved me. He did nothing to help Nella when she brought information to him. Same with the sheriff for that matter. This book really made me look at the men in this series and hope others aren't quite as bullheaded. When Nella goes to investigate a place that repairs motor homes and other off road recreational vehicles, things go crazy.

Will Nella's determination and tenacity get her in trouble? Will it help her solve the crime that no one is interested in investigating? And will Boone realize what a treasure she is?

I enjoyed the casting of Desiree Ketchum and Connor Crais for this book. It was a good blend of voices and both seemed to understand the characters very well. I would definitely listen to the pair again or separately.

Audio and Editing Nightmare

I am truly disappointed and a little upset the way this book had chapters out of order, repeated lines and had looooong drawn out gaps in silence in the middle of dialogue for several chapters! I have over 300 audiobooks and this is by far the worst editing mishaps I’ve ever experienced. This really ruined the story for me and is upsetting I wasted money on this title because I like this author.

Not up to Ms. Brokers usual high standard

First of all let me say I usually love books by this author and was thrilled to find this series in Audible!
Being an older woman I always enjoy stories with heroes and heroines in their 40's and 50's, not enough of them out there btw! However I found this book somewhat lacking in both emotion and character growth. Oh, the plot was ok, or would have been if said heroine hadn't been so annoying and pigheaded! Never listening to those around her who were trying to keep her safe she just forged ahead with her own stupid plans, which never ended well for her and caused more upset for those friends! SPOILER: ie the burned barn and demolished police car to name but two instances.......didn't have to happen if she'd done as asked! Why this woman thought she knew better than everyone else I just do not know! Her " helping" always turned into her needing help and causing more inconvenience in my view!
There was also no chemistry between h and H! They met, didn't like each other then they're sleeping together, she pulls stunts, he saves her, then suddenly they are in love and getting married? I never saw the romantic development one usually gets to enjoy, so that was a puzzle.
Also, who edited this story? There were several times the same passage was repeated or out of sequence! Several very long pauses in chapters occurred, so lengthy that I had to check my kindle hadn't turned itself off! Very poor execution by someone!
Finally I did not particularly enjoy the narrators. Mr. Crais was ok except his voice was a bit on the monotonous side, Ms. Ketchum didn't do it for me, I wish they had picked a different female narrator, and perhaps she may have contributed to my displeasure with listening to this book!
So, overall I found this book to be a bit of a disappointment! Sadly I probably won't listen to the rest of the series, will save my credits for books with more exciting characters, better plots and more pleasing narrators!

What’s with all the errors?

I don’t normally write reviews, but this is pretty bad. The story is wonderful but the editing was horrible. Multiple chapters out of order, large chucks of dead air, repeating lines. Whoever did the edits didn’t do the story justice.

Enjoyable older couple romance

Who says you can’t find love after 30? When librarian Nella leaves her home in Canada to search for her sister, Pippa, in Montana, she doesn’t have a clue what she’s doing…but she’s determined. When she arrives in the small town and no one takes her seriously, she doubles her efforts, especially since the man who had been recommended for search and rescue is a jerk! Fletch can’t believe that the determined woman is the same who fell into his grocery cart. He wasn’t nice to her then and he wasn’t nice when she asked for his help. After much prodding by his friends, Fletch gives in and decides to help. It quickly becomes apparent that Nella has cause for worry. The couple bond over the search but each has insecurities that may prevent an HEA…not to mention the lurking danger surrounding Pippa’s attack. A romantic suspense with a grumpy cowboy and a librarian….fantastic!
Great narration

Entertaining romantic suspense.

I really enjoyed this listen. The setting and the plot where both filked with incident and great characters. Both Nella and Fletcher had their spikey sides and the mature characters which added to their interest. The scenes in the woods were so good, so well described and the slow burn romance, just lovely. Both Desiree Ketchum and Conor Crais were excellent . their voices matched the characters so well and their narration was first class. Loved it! 💖 💖💖💖💖

Good story - production needs editing

The story was intriguing and enjoyable. There was mystery, suspense, romance all in one. I liked the cowboy story without the emphasis of calling him a cowboy every two seconds.
The narrators, Connor Crais and Deseriee Ketchum did a great job, but the editors need to go back and fix some things. There were all a lot of repeated lines and too long pauses between some chapters.
