Publisher's Summary

The secluded forest cabin was meant to give Sophie a place to hide, to heal, and to be safe.

But from the moment she arrives, she’s not alone. She glimpses dark shapes from the corner of her eye, feels phantom touches, and her dreams are filled with seductive shadows. What she first mistakes for delusions of her traumatized mind soon prove to be so much more…

An ancient, mysterious, dangerous entity lurks in the woods — and it wants Sophie.

Trigger warning: This book contains violence, including a history of domestic abuse.

Exceptional

I had been anxiously awaiting this book to be available on Audible and I was not disappointed. Tiffany and Robert have the most amazing imaginative power together. Not only was this book fantastical, it managed to touch on several of our everyday tragedies. Domestic violence is widespread and devastating. T&F were able to address these difficult issues in a way that kept it real. I will not spoil anything for other readers by saying to much. What I will say is that this is an exceptional book and Jaime did a very good job of voicing all the characters. Do not hesitate to buy this book. I will caution anyone who has been touched by domestic violence to only read when they feel ready. The characters are amazing and the world building was to. For such a short book, it was exceptional!

So many issues...

Ok. So. I had a lot of issues with this book. The abusive relationship...then kind of being touched in an unconscious state. Never really asking too many questions, never saying no, the fact that the guy that shows up is only half human. Maybe I didn't totally know what I was getting into, but I just found some things to be problematic.
The narrator though...I did enjoy his voice. Def the highlight of listening to this book that seemed to go on forever.

Mediocre as an audio book

Maybe this is better read but as an audiobook it fell flat. The narrator’s female voice made the woman seem vapid and annoying.
The story line has great potential and I had high hopes but…

Tons of Spicy Scenes, but with Triggers

Despite being short, the book is filled with lots of spicy scenes. I lost count, but more than 5.

However, there are Trigger Warnings for abuse, escaping abuse, and attempted "R", BUT (SPOILERS) that person doesn't succeed, gets killed in a satisfying way, and the book has a very happy ending, and Sophie becomes stronger and grows to outpace her traumas.

Excellent Narration

Jamie Treselyan gave each character their own voice with impressive range. He portrayed Cruce especially well with a bass, growly power. I like the audio version better than the print because JT’s performance was that good.

Meh

It was kind of annoying with Josephine Davis said over and over and over. And it was a very cliche romance, this book was recommended to me so my expectations were higher than what was delivered.

Wait What Now???

This review contains spoilers!!!!!

Now Wait A Damn Minute!!! What the hell did I just read!!

Sophie.... Hmmm how can I out this. Sooooo, she's in an abusive marriage with (Tyler), secretly makes a friend that lives across the street. The abuse gets worse and he goes to jail. While he's in jail her friend help her RUN. So runs away, moving to a remote cabin. As soon as she arrives she tells individuals where she lives (hmm weird) even though she knows he will come looking for her. Back at her cabin she feels something looking at her, when she sleeps she has orgasms from "something". She is terrified of her husband and has a gun but for some reason NEVER carries it. (Weird again)

Cruz....What the hell is he??I don't think anyone knows. Some type of shadow creature. But he stalks Sophie and has his way with her while she sleeps. When she ventures out in the woods and get lost, she is attacked and Cruz appears. Removing the threat and introducing himself. He then stalks her more, wearing her down until she is willing to be his mate and devoting themselves to one another. (Weird again) . He's able to have her as his mate on Halloween, the only day that he is in flesh form. And so he does.

Sophies friend keeps her updated on his whereabouts until he finds a clue to where Sophie is within her friends mail. And goes in search of Sophie.

Tyler finds Sophie easily by way of the town people telling him where she lives. (major eyeroll, who didn't see that coming). He walks in on Sophie and Cruz (whatever he is) having sex and is majorly bewildered. He commands her to come with him and when she refuses he shoots Cruz multiple times and takes her. She tries to fight but loses and he attempt to rape her. Saying he's undoing what the beast has done, being that his cum was running down her leg, so he must make this right. (Psycho!!!!!) Cruz finds a way to Save The Day and they confess their love for one another. Cruz extends her an offer and Sophie accepts which makes her like him. (Again whatever the hell he is).

Yet at the end of this book they appear human. (Wait What!!!) And of course she ends up pregnant. So then, what species will the child be???

So again, what the hell did I just read. I have no idea, the story started out a bit slow but it picked up after a while. But I'm still a bit lost. But oh well this was a very short read. Try it out if you'd like, not one I'd recommend simply because there are so many missing pieces.

Ehh it was okay

Plot is what you'd expect - fast paced and not "the point" of the novel. SPOILERS she comes out of an terribly abusive relationship where she was basically owned, then stumbles upon Mr. shadow forest lord and he repeats steamily "You're mine" for ten days and then she becomes his forest wife.

Narration for the male characters were on point I guess, but jeez the dialogue between the female characters - comical.

Overall, ehh, I giggled, but not worth it.

Nice short story

I love it when narrators put some effort into creating voices for the different characters. This one nailed it and was a real pleasure to listen to. The story was nice, it was as long as it needed to be and I loved the characters
