Publisher's Summary

Jason Thorpe was content living a quiet life in New Orleans. He and his best friend, Ode, opened their cozy curios shop in the French Quarter, and he was making some new, albeit interesting, friends....

Then Jason met Varic Maedoc, the prince of the vampyrs, and his life changed forever.

Named the prince’s consort, Jason quickly became the most important subject in the vampyr realm, the man who holds the wolf of Maedoc’s heart - a position that comes with certain obligations and no small amount of influence. Theirs is a partnership of love and a lifetime commitment, but that bond is about to be tested when Varic must return to court and Jason accompanies him.

The king’s court in Malta is unlike anything Jason could have imagined. Amid the luxury and decadence of the palace is an air of danger and intrigue he is unprepared for, further complicated by new friends and allies who may not be what they seem. To stand beside and protect Varic, Jason must use every weapon in his arsenal to uncover a plot to usurp the king and reveal the identities of those who would see Jason dead before accepting him as their consort.

His single greatest asset is the love of his prince, but even that may not be enough to save Jason’s life.

Weird pauses in chapter 1 are fixed!

The pauses that plagued chapter 1 have been fixed, and it's now a smooth listen the whole book through! This one is a much more twisted world than the first book, and definitely darker, but it's so much more in depth with more plot and more action. At first, the politics are a bit difficult to follow, but I caught on pretty quick and I often find royal politics to be incredibly confusing in the real world, let alone in a fantasy world where I feel two steps behind. Courtly Politics did not overwhelm the book, even though 'court' is a pretty big part of the story. I will warn you though there are some very sad parts and some super intense parts, but the sweet parts and funny parts overshadow the them and the book leaves you with warm and fuzzies. Another wonderful story Mary Calmes! And the narration is fantastic now that everything has been fixed! Thank you very much for putting it on audible!

I'm so glad this book is on audio but

the issues with Chapter 1 are annoying! There are multiple places where the sound cuts out without reason. I noticed that the sound sort of gradually lowers to nothing in those parts but will abruptly return. Please fix those spots.

Captivating

This short series is one that should continue on... I was so spellbound with every word... It would be lovely to hear them get married and get that surrogate and also other books about Tiago and Haydrians beginning and time together and other's...
Amazing amazing listen!!!

Incredible

I normally hate vampire books but Mary Calmes does it again. Blows everything out of the water with her incredible storytelling, her vivid and real characters, and such intense plot lines. Once again I’ve fallen in love with her books and I crave more.

Great Narrator - unnecessary rinse and repeat

Scott Smith has become one of my favorite narrators but even he couldn’t save this book.

Just wow! Unexpected thriller with awesome romance

This book was awesome and so much better than I anticipated going in (and I had high hopes).

Spoilers!
Throughout the first book I always got the sense that things would be so cool once they got to Malta, and boy was I right! This book absolutely delivers. I was expecting just some casual book to half-listen to on my day off and instead I found myself gripped the entire day. the relationship between Jason and Nirilla is masterful, and I found myself sobbing at certain points (I thought I was just reading a smutty romance, why am I crying over a side character?!) Seriously, I don't know how Calmes does it, but she perfectly captures the way many gay men would feel towards their female bffs. I had to pause for awhile following the death scene, that was intense, but a testament of Calmes ability to turn what you'd think of as a 'smut' book into a notable masterpiece. The action scenes as well in this are unprecedented for this type of novel, it's clear Calmes did a good amount of research for her writing. the combat is so detailed and vivid, I felt as though I were watching an action movie in the theatres!

This book was amazing and I hope there's a book 3! I know Calmes has many other books, but this series in particular has to be my favorite of hers so far

Wow

I listened to this book first. The way she writes is descriptive and colorful. She is an ace at developing and continuing the story to completion.
I thank you for an afternoon of escape from reality.

Excellent book, bad listening after chapter 15

Excellent book, bad performance after chapter 15. I could not listen to the end. Chapter 16 glitches so badly, it took away the enjoyment of listening the story. Please fix the glitching parts.

Emotional roller coaster

I truly love this story as much as the first. Scott did a great job performing it and I have listened to it many, many times.

During the first time I listened to it I kept thinking this must be it, now the story is done. Only to realise that there was hours left. I laughed and cried several times and was wrung out emotionally when it was done.

I love the chemistry between the different characters and how they interact with each other.

Here's to hoping there will be another book in the series as I do love Jason and Varic and is curious about what will happen next.

Many of the Characters Are out of Place

I feel that the author has never been to Malta, Sicily, or Northern Africa. The characters are not described as people that were from that region of the world. Character, Norrilla is stated to be from Cameroon, yet she is described as someone from Norway. I found this to be very disappointing and distracting.

I will not be purchasing any more stories from the author.

Review of audio book

I loved the book when I read it initially, but the audiobook was just ... more!
So lovely, so engaging, so sad, so beautiful, so heart full; I can thoroughly recommend it as a fine listen.
