Publisher's Summary

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Jews, then pay attention....

The Jewish people are one of the oldest living people groups on the planet. The Jews lived alongside the ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, Phoenicians, and Sumerians - all of whom have since disappeared from the pages of history. Yet the Jews still remain. Despite all of the odds, Jewish culture, language, laws, and religion have remained intact over the course of thousands of years.

Even after being kicked out of their homeland and scattered all over the globe, the Jews were able to hold their customs close to their heart. While in exile, they developed special rules to live by through rabbinical works, such as the Talmud, which gave them a moral compass by which to live, no matter where they might end up. This was a great source of comfort for the Jewish people even while having to live in less than encouraging environments. Their traditions kept them strong.

In History of the Jews: A Captivating Guide to Jewish History, Starting from the Ancient Israelites through Roman Rule to World War 2, you will discover topics such as

  • The origin story of the Jewish people
  • How the Jews first established Israel
  • About the judges and kings who ruled Israel
  • The Babylonian captivity
  • Life under Roman rule
  • How Christianity emerged from Judaism
  • The Jewish emancipation
  • The Holocaust
  • The formation of Israel
  • And much, much more

Comprehensive but perspective a bit skewed

This was a very comprehensive history overall and I learned several things from the telling. I do think the perspective of the story was too Christian oriented. This is acknowledged in the audiobook but it still comes across as the history of Jews and as interpreted through the lens of Christianity and Western thought. There is more than ample time spent on Jesus as referenced in all three of the major Abrahamic religions. This issue notwithstanding there were still adequate treatments of the different sects if Judaism and important figures in history.

Biased Book

A Good book overall and short. I'm giving it 1 stars due to two glaring issues.

(1) The author himself is a zionist and approaches Palestine-Israel from a zionist perspective. He propagates the lie that Palestinians chose to leave rather than be exiled. His argument is, "Well, Israel said they left on their own while Palestinians say that they were ethnically cleansed, who's to say who was right." Yes, I'm sure over a million Palestinians just decided to leave their homes for no reason, Israel can't be lying.

The author also doesn't go into detail regarding the Jewish militias that terrorized the Palestinians or the fact that Israel is a modern-day apartheid state. No mention of any of this. Just zionist propaganda about the "Jewish homeland" while ignoring the millions of Palestinians who are still being ethnically cleansed.

(2) The author seems to have a strong bigotry against Muslims and Arabs. He portrays them much less favorably than he does any other group. When portraying Christianity, he discusses it from the perspective of Christians, but when discussing Islam, he adds his own opinion to it.

e.g. "Christians believe Jesus is the son of god." But for Muslims, he'll say something like, "Muslims took their religion from Judaism." Rather than taking about Islamic beliefs from an Islamic perspective.

Of course, as mentioned before, the author seems to be an avowed Zionists, and Zionism is usually coupled with racism.

7 day war

I happen to be in Israel when the Arabs were amassing on the border. The radio constantly said don’t leave stay in your houses. My Hebrew was much better than then it is now but still I asked my is it really friends if I really heard it right. They said yes word for word you heard it right. Yet the Arabs kept saying to leave they were going to push the Jews into the sea are the is excuse me the Israelis into the sea. Arafat told them to leave kept them in the desert tents and for this he received the peace prize. I talk to some people who live in flats Palestinians and Israelis kids were all friends and played together until the government told them know not to. So if you’re wondering that the Israelis wanted them out you were wrong I heard it with my own ears ears

A low detail summary to get you by

I wasn't too impressed with the author's synopsis of various Old Testament histories. I've been studying the Bible for over 40 years now. For example when the author credits Samuel for the selection of kings Saul and David when in fact God chose both... Samuel merely did some anointing. For an Old Testament understanding of Jewish history, just read the Old Testament.

These slights left me wondering if any of the non-biblical accounts suffered from the same lack of attention to detail.

I did however learn a few things that made this history a worthwhile listen.

I liked the narrator.

A sad history

From the beginning of time until today all the Gaza Strip Jewish people afford just to live. They have been slaves, scapegoats victims of violence ATC they have been through so much around the world it’s still today people can find reasons to hate them. Growing up I never understood why people dislike Jewish people, I know they were blamed for killing Jesus but that was a different time and place. After reading this captivating history book I have a whole new respect for the Jewish people as a whole. This book was not only entertaining but eye-opening and educational. I highly recommend this book to those who really want to read a victims story. People today love to be the victim, while the real victims or silent and just going on about their business. I can’t say enough about this but it really showed me a whole new side to Jewish people.

Very insightful

A lot of what is said in this book is stuff I leaned throughout studying Jewish history. This book did an amazing job at organizing all I leaned throughout the years in a matter of three hours.

So informative.

A complete and well-balanced history that doesn't rely on religious explanations to tell its story.

Good book, but emotionally biased towared judaism

Short, precise and to the point. Very well written with some captivating stories.
However the conclusions are more emotional than practical. Specially the formation of modern day Israel was told by making one side look evil and other side look good.

Great, but I want more

I found this a really interesting overview, but so much not said, it needs a further reading section.
Narrator was a little monotoned but not so much as to make listening to the book hard work

Brilliant

Starting from the beginning, it is an excellent summary of the ongoing struggle of the Jewish people through history. This audio book is well written and worth getting if you want to learn more about this amazing chronicle of events. The account is enlightening if you are familiar with the Jewish story or not. I only wished the authors could have covered more of this unique story. The narration is also well done. I could easily listen to it again.
