They were the Savages. Raiders from our distant past. Elites who left Earth to create tailor-made utopias aboard the massive lighthuggers that crawled through the darkness between the stars. But the people they left behind on a dying planet didn't perish in the dystopian nightmare the Savages had themselves created: they thrived, discovering faster-than-light technology and using it to colonize the galaxy ahead of the Savages, forming fantastic new civilizations that surpassed the wildest dreams of Old Earth.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Publisher's Summary
For the Rangers, the best defense is always...more offense.
As an overwhelming army of skeletons, wraiths, ghouls, and other dark creatures - all serving a powerful undead sorcerer - advance against Forward Operating Base Hawthorn, the Rangers must now do what they do best: Go on the extreme offense.
It’s time to Hit and Fade. Attack, withdraw, and outmaneuver the enemy.
PFC Talker, attached to the weapons team section of a Ranger recon patrol led by Captain Knife Hand, recounts the harrowing attempt to destabilize this surreal and horrific nightmare force with everything the snipers, master breachers, and stone-cold killers of the Ranger regiment have in their bag of lethal tricks.
Abating, channelizing, and leading the enemy into a series of devastating traps involving everything from kinetically violent ambushes to immensely explosive crater munitions, the Rangers strike at the enemy as death personified, fading like ghosts only when the dead are dead once again.
When facing Rangers, even nightmares are afraid.

Ranger Fan Boy Fiction
I love a good mil-fantasy as much as the next guy (probably more than the next guy), and Im a stickler for getting the tactical, technical and operational details right, but this was just too much. There was less story development than Ranger promotional material. I really felt the story was negatively impacted by the incessant detailing or Ranger this and Ranger that. I get it, they are Rangers kicking fantasy ass, I am duly impressed with your knowledge or Rangering, please, move on, I didnt want to download a book about The Rangers. Really bummed me out. I wonder what percentage of the total world count is Ranger.

Truly entertaining series
Disclaimer, I’m a fan of both authors, I love the Galaxy Edge series, and they have created something that is fun and action packed, TBH, I’m surprised someone didn’t try this before, an elite US military unit goes all “Connecticut Yankee” but instead of back in time, they go forward to a Bronze Age, magic filled universe filled with LOTR type enemies, alive and dead, in closing, a fun listen, excellently narrated, time to start Violence of Action, great stuff, a wild ride

Can’t take it anymore
I can’t take that 1/2 of every book, is internal monologue about coffee. Mid fire fight with a legion of undead… and the main character looks over the hoard of undead across the valley… and launches into a 5 minute monologue about how he wonders if there’s coffee out there. Very next chapter, while debriefing with command…. Another 5 minute monologue about coffee, and how jealous he is that the wizard got more coffee. Followed by more rambling about coffee. Seriously, 1/2 the book is bleepin’ coffee!!!
Then, I’m sorry… I just can’t get past ‘The Forge’ anymore. A piece of machinery FROM OUR AGE, that traveled with them. In this book… it is nonstop manufacturing/cranking our, fully assembled mortars, claymores, guns, bullets, medical supplies, rations.. CASES OF ENERGY DRINKS… massive MOAB explosive bombs, bullets/casings filled with gunpowder of every type of round imaginable. Armor piercing 5.56 rounds to high explosive armor piercing 50 caliber rounds. Thermite grenades, frag grenades, flash bangs, EVEN A REMOTE CONTROL ‘raptor’ AIR DRONE with a freakin 20 millimeter canon!!!!! Batteries, new night vision equipment….
No need to EVER find new materials, nothing. This impossible device just lets the rangers constantly churn out everything from near-nuclear explosives, to energy drinks….. without any electricity or gas to power it… 24/7.
I can’t take it anymore.
Yes, I’m reading a story about soldiers transported 10,000 years in the future and fighting undead… but that’s the more believable part of this.
I can’t suspend belief enough to accept a piece of modern machinery, is manufacturing ALL of those things, with no materials required, not to mention its less believable than the entire premise of the story.
I will not ask for a refund. I was engaged, though annoyed, for 2 books. He earned my money. But I will not waste a credit on any more of these.

Keep em coming.
When I first read the synopsis for Forgotten Ruin I thought Jason and Nick had lost their minds. This series is one of my all time favorites now. The concept seems goofy at first but it just works somehow. You get magic, orcs, elves, Rangers, and dip. Oh, and don't forget the coffee.
Great job all around guys, already read the third one and can't wait for the audio book. CRG reads a tad slow but I just bump that up to 1.25 speed and it's good. Really like the voices and great range.

Dungeons and Dragons and Rangers
If you loved the first in the series, you'll love this one too! If you haven't read Forgotten Ruin, well, get that one and this one and enjoy them both for the first time, lucky guy.
I thoroughly enjoy the fleshed-out characters as they continue to explore their madcap new reality. Ancient problems require modern solutions; utilizing firepower and high explosives to solve their problems as only America's elite soldiers can, these guys would have cleared the mines of Moiria with style (Carl Gustaf don't care about no balrogs, baby).
The narration is excellent, which is unsurprising as it was in the first book as well.
Get it. You'll have a blast.

We on hot comet ride now.
So, you know how sequels spool up with exposition to get to the action?
Not this one. When you start this story, come in at a dead run. It doesn’t get any slower from there.
It accelerates.
Jason Anspach and Nick Cole did an amazing job keeping the continuity from the first book, although they brought the reader to a different battle field. Fantasy is not my favored genre, but this is absolutely one of my favorite stories of all time.
I like the character flaws, habits, and strengths the authors wrote into the characters. For veterans, the Rangers in this story are relatable. Including strong coffee addictions. Trust me, it’s a thing.
This story is fast paced high adventure. It is not for people that enjoy light reading. This is not that. Not by a very long shot (pun intended)
.
Now, if the authors could make about ten more of these magically appear immediately, that would be greaaaaat. (Reference to a cult movie from the 90’s.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
A solid five stars in all categories.

It was so worth the wait!
Seriously, this sequel is fantastic. I am not that much of a fantasy fan, but I love military sci-fi. I couldn't believe that it works so well, but hey, thats magic for ya. As I stated in my review of the first book in this series, I should have known better after reading the authors other work. I haven't anxiously awaited the next book in a series ever like this one. I am a huge fan of world building and expansive storylines, and this is my first time experiencing this as the books come out.
In a time when identity politics is forcing so many great stories to change to their detriment to push an agenda, it is SO refreshing to see authors writing for the good of the story. There are characters of every type in these books and none of it is forced, it just flows. The narrator nails Talkers character perfectly and understands the nuances of rangering and how to convey that with the characters. I am glad to see that Last of Autumn has lost the halting speech pattern, that was my biggest gripe of the last book, and that is still just a minor detail.
When is the next one available on Audible?

It's an absolutely amazing follow up and entry into a new series. it brings you everything you could want, action, story, lore, consequence, growth. You won't find yourself bogged down in heavy handed world building or going numb from inconsequential non-stop action. Just a great story, great characters, and a great universe. Surprise, Losers.

New favorite story and narrator
Wow! Where to begin with this one? The action is intense as ever and I feel like I'm learning something about tactics and warfare with each new book. There's a strong Tom Clancy technical vibe except it's drenched in Ranger culture and surrounded by legions of undead.
And Christopher Ryan Grant is the *perfect* narrator for this series. Kudos to whoever did the casting on this. CRG *is* Talker.
My only complaint is that I want to listen to book three RIGHT NOW!

There is zero story here
This book is just a continuous word Ranger. It’s book two, we know it’s about Rangers. Seems like every tenth word is Ranger.
Uses a hundred words when five would covey the same meaning. It just becomes word salad. The first five hours of this is just one battle on one night that give you an idea of how little story there is. Getting returned

Great Mil SciFi/ Fantasy sequel
This book carries on almost straight after the first novel and the action does not fade away ( sorry!!). The characters are expanded upon bu their stories are adapting to the what occurred in the first novel and changing them . Nick and Jason keep the military action coming which does not disappoint and to love how they tie in the realism of a normal combat perspective with the fantasy elements that this new world brings. The author of the audiobook does a great job of being Talker and the rest of the ranger (and extended) family to life. 5 stars all around well done.

Another winner🔥
Great follow up to Forgotten Ruin. Great character development and shocks and suprises a plenty. Really good series here. Different but really good with at least 2 more to look forward to 👍
