Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Story
The news is full of disturbing events today. There's war and rumors of war. There's the false recovery of the economy. Faith in the US economy is extremely low. Foreign banks have either slowed their purchases of Treasury Bonds or, in a few cases, begun unloading them. We have a current election that is rife with corruption, extreme partisanship, and outright fraud. It would appear the left in the country is ready to do about anything to see their candidate elected.

Too much nonsense!
- By Gerry H. on 01-31-19
By: A. American
Publisher's Summary
Word of Alpha's recovery spreads throughout the region. The news is welcomed by most - but not all. Some see the small Texas town as a threat, others want to dominate the prosperous community. Often, it's difficult to discern friend from foe, and miscommunication can be deadly.
The legendary range wars of the early American West were brutal, bloody affairs. Water was often an excuse for the skirmishes, but rarely was it the true root of conflict. Political competition, an unquenchable thirst for power, and poor communications were the real catalysts for these violent struggles. In the post-apocalyptic world of Bishop and Terri, circumstances are ripe for history to repeat. Electricity replaces water as the point of contention, the new world on the brink of falling into violent chaos, just like in the past. The issues run in tandem, human nature apparently unchanged in 200 years. Join the citizens of post-collapse West Texas as they struggle to rebuild and improve their lives. It's a journey filled with the joy of success and fraught with the peril of defeat.

Please have some consistency!!
I want to first say that I really like where this story has gone in books 2,3,4. The characters and storyline where excellent, and I highly recommend those books to everyone.
With that being said this series has been all over the place. The first book and narrator were horrible. As stated above the next 3 books were great and the narrators did a good job. Then this turd. The story although not as good as the previous 2 books is ok, my problem lies mainly with the bad narration and crappy production values. The 'tele-type' sound effects are beyond annoying.
My biggest issue lies is in the lack of consistency this series has had. If you look at all the books in this series they all have different narrators. Now that can be ok, but then keep the production side of things the same. Listening to this book felt like I was listening to an entirely different series then the last 3 books. And compared to the last book this narrator sucked bad.
After getting through books 2,3,4 in about a week I was looking forward to this one, but am disappointed. I wouldn't tell anyone who have already invested in the other books in the series not to get it, but I think you will see what I am saying after the first hour or so.
If I can make a plea to all the authors and/or publishing companies out there in control of getting these books made in audio format, it's to please understand that book series that are as linear as this one need to have the same narrator throughout. If I could compare it to movies, this is akin to having a different actor play Frodo in each Lord of the Rings movies.
Joe Nobody you have a lot of promise with your stories but if you don't have someone who can give your books the performance they need people won't buy them.

Narrator ruins the story
as with all of the books in this series, the narrator ruins this book. he makes everyone sound either excited as a 5 year old kid or like whining brats. It is painful to listen to. However I like Bishop and Terri' adventures

Yes not the same quality, but the story overcomes
I'm familiar with this reader, the odd sound effects and chimes. I like his presentation though I find it far different from the rest. You will hate it your binge listening. Love it if your already a fan of the reader.
The story line kept me more invested than any of the 4 books before. Dreading finding out what voice will do the next book, but can't wait to see what happens to the characters.

The chimes! The chimes!
This is certainly not reality based fiction. The situations have started to become a little surreal as teeth-to-throat enemies become bosom buddies. Still, it makes for an entertaining listen. But damn those totally unnecessary, irritating chimes! Sound effects should add to a story, not distract from it.

Another horrible performance
What would have made Holding Their Own V better?
A different narrator.
What did you like best about this story?
The development of sideline stories.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Dave Wright?
Any of the narrators from book 2, 3 or 4.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I really enjoy the series and like the characters. Some of the dialogue is a little corny, but fun.
Any additional comments?
I cannot understand why a different narrator for every book. It really ruins the continuity of the books.

Decent story, questionable narration...
The story itself is decent, it's short on many of the elements that make the previous volumes of the series entertaining and educational. You won't learn as many tricks of survival. Still, it advances the story and overall I enjoyed the story.
The narration on the other hand..,
The narrator had a pleasant enough voice but I found it both hilarious and annoying at times. He had a knack for making every character seem like a whiny English-dubbed Kung-fu movie character. The ex-green beret sounds transgender. I did find that if you set your listening speed to 1.25 X it helps a lot!
I believe it was just poor casting and not the narrator's fault. His voice is more suited to children's books than post-apocalyptic books. I just muddled through it. Thank goodness the next installment has a different narrator!

Great story! Abdominal orator
The story is fantastic. With the completion of every volume, I can’t wait to read the next in the series.
However, the orator for Volume 5 sucked beyond description. It bears the question: Where in the hell does Joe Nobody find his orators?!!! This guy was TERRIBLE!
But, again, the story remains invigorating and entertaining.

how could a compelling story get lost in narration
I enjoyed this title but was very distracted by the narrator and the silly music that was added to 'make a point'. The recording also failed many times with long lapses at the end of chapters, some so long that I looked to see it the app had stopped working; and then there was even a flub that was included. I finished listening to this book because I liked watching the character evolve - although there were a few leaps at the end - and want to see where they are going, but it wasn't because I liked the sound the narrator - who might be good in other books but not this one.
