For centuries, the only way to access God’s word was to hear it read aloud in public gatherings. Today, many are blessed to own personal printed copies of the Bible, but there is a surprising benefit to hearing the Scriptures read aloud as it was for so many generations. Verses you have read many times will impact you in a new way when you hear them through the Listener’s Audio Bible (NIV). Read in a single voice with subtle background music, Max McLean’s skillful, engaging, but never over-dramatized style will bring the complete Bible to life.

Story
Rooted in the past, but right for today, the NRSV continues the tradition of William Tyndale, the King James Version, the American Standard Version, and the Revised Standard Version. Equally important, it sets a new standard for the 21st century. The NRSV stands out among the many translations because it is "as literal as possible" in adhering to the ancient texts and only "as free as necessary" to make the meaning clear in graceful, understandable English.

A masterpiece of deep learning and fine sensibility, Robert Alter's translation of the Hebrew Bible, now complete, reanimates one of the formative works of our culture. Capturing its brilliantly compact poetry and finely wrought, purposeful prose, Alter renews the Old Testament as a source of literary power and spiritual inspiration. From the family frictions of Genesis and King David's flawed humanity to the serene wisdom of Psalms and Job's incendiary questioning of God's ways, these magnificent works of world literature resonate with a startling immediacy.

Whether taken as a book of faith or a cultural artifact, the New Testament is among the most significant writings the world has ever known, its web of meaning relied upon by virtually every major writer in the last 2,000 years. Yet the New Testament is not only one of Western civilization’s most believed books, but also one of its most widely disputed, often maligned, and least clearly understood, with a vast number of people unaware of how it was written and transmitted.

Story
In the 2,000 years that have elapsed since the time of Christ, Christians have been as much divided by their faith as united, as much at odds as in communion. And the contents of Christian confession have developed with astonishing energy. How can believers claim a faith that has been passed down through the ages while recognizing the real historical contingencies that have shaped both their doctrines and their divisions? In this carefully argued essay, David Bentley Hart critiques the concept of "tradition" that has become dominant in Christian thought as fundamentally incoherent.

The Qur'an, believed by Muslims to be the word of God, was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad 1,400 years ago. It is the supreme authority in Islam and the living source of all Islamic teaching; it is a sacred text and a book of guidance that sets out the creed, rituals, ethics, and laws of the Islamic religion. It has been one of the most influential books in the history of literature. Recognized as the greatest literary masterpiece in Arabic, it has nevertheless remained difficult to understand in its English translations.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD - not orgainzed by books
The Bible is organized by books and chapters and has been for hundreds of years. THIS horrible version is divided into "Parts" and "Chapters" making it impossible to find the actual books of the Bible. For example, if you want to listen to John 4 there is no way to find it.

Not sorted by book???? Who does that?
No book headings makes it impossible to find specific books. Seriously, chapter 45??? why not just name the book. Unless you have the books memorized by number, you’ll have to guess and listen to find a specific book. How stupid is this?

Frustrating!
Why should such a good recording be spoiled by not laying out the chapters properly? It would have been so easy to add to the audio chapter #s what part of the bible the chapter is referring to. Surely the publishers know that people don't generally listen to the whole bible from beginning to end. (No problem if you want to do that). Most of us what to read a particular book or part of a book.

Good straightforward reading with no distractions
I prefer this straightforward reading compared to the dramatized version with sound effects, as though the Bible need help to be exciting (no amount of dramatic music can make the genealogical lists more interesting anyway). The narrator does not have an exaggerated nor monotonous reading, which lets you focus on the words and and contemplate on the meaning. The book does list the books by name (Genesis, Exodus, etc), which is better than the other versions, which has only chapter numbers (Word of Promise NKJV). You can't go chapter by chapter, unfortunately, so there is an assumption that you are reading the whole book, not a specific chapter. With short books, that is fine, but for the book of Psalms, it makes you rail at the malnourished table of content....

Deficient in accessing chapter and verse
The narrator's voice is clear and beautiful. That is the commendable part of this Holy bible audio. People who would like to access particular or favorite Biblical passages will have a hard time doing so. There is no chapter and verse listed. Searching is a very trying experience. I would not recommend this Holy Bible/NRSV download until those who put it together include each book's chapter and verse. Such are the reasons I gave it the rating I believe it deserved.

Where are the Chapters IN EACH BOOK of the Bible?
Love the reader. He performs the book with just enough inflection/dramatization of voices in conversation without being overly so, and that breaks up the monotony the Bible can have if read straight through without treating conversation as conversation and not simply text. HOWEVER, it is extremely aggravating to not have a way to go to chapters or verses within each book. Why can't there be a way to get to the exact place in the reading where you leave off or have to find a specific chapter/verse without having to fast-forward/back in each book? Everybody knows this is mostly how people read the Bible. Even if you just want to read it straight through, there needs to be a way to get back to where you left off if for some reason you send it back to the beginning of the chapter or whatever. Or if you are reading the OT and the NT together - you can't switch back and forth. Bible study entails comparisons and contrasts and such between OT and NT. It's infuriating.

Well read but badly indexed.
The Bible is more of a reference and study book than one to be read in continuous form from start to finish. Yet the chapters of this audio version do not reflect or show the books and chapters of the Bible. So getting around it is hard. Please re do the chapters to allow for the reader of the word.

Impossible to navigate
What were the publishers thinking? To produce an audio book version of the NRSV Bible is great, so long as you hire a good narrator, which they did, and PROVIDE CHAPTER HEADINGS. Without the latter, they may as well not have bothered.

The Holy Bible NRSV.
I found this to be a wonderful Bible version full of the good news. Listening was made much easier because of John Bank’s clear and concise tone of voice. I’ve read The ‘paper’ Bible twice, but there’s always something new to learn, and listening to the NRSV on Audible, I picked up so much more than I thought I would.
All that said, it was a shame that I couldn’t jump from Book to Book if I so wanted. What’s up with that Audible?
However, I still highly recommend this copy for the narration.
