Publisher's Summary

A road map for dismantling the fear and shame that keep you from living a free and authentic life.

In the aftermath of stress, disappointment, and trauma, people often fall into survival mode, even while a part of them longs for more. Juggling multiple demands and responsibilities keeps them busy, but not healed. As a survivor of sexual assault, racism, and evacuation from a civil war in Liberia, Dr. Thema Bryant knows intimately the work involved in healing. Having made the journey herself, in addition to guiding others as a clinical psychologist and ordained minister, Dr. Thema shows you how to reconnect with your authentic self and reclaim your time, your voice, your life.

Signs of disconnection from self can take many forms, including people-pleasing, depression, anxiety, and resentment. Healing starts with recognizing and expressing emotions in an honest way and reconnecting with the neglected parts of yourself, but it can’t be done in a vacuum. Dr. Thema gives you the tools to meaningfully connect with your larger community, even if you face racism, sexism, heartbreak, grief, and trauma. Rather than shrinking in the face of life’s difficulties, you will discover in Homecoming the therapeutic approaches and spiritual practices to live a more expansive life characterized by empowerment, healthier relationships, gratitude, and a deeper sense of purpose.

Marvelous!

After listening to Dr. Thema Bryant’s podcast I decided to buy the book and I was not disappointed. I was hoping and then delighted when I found out she was the narrator.

I like the examples she gave throughout the book that were very relatable. I love how she “invites” you into certain practices within the book without being pushy.

I bought the physical book as well so I plan to read it again. I feel as though it is a resource I could use forever and not something I have to necessarily read in order. Very good book!

Great content but poor reading performance

The overall message of the book is great, relatable, and full of wisdom. Unfortunately the author uses a robotic like tone while reading the book. I can’t listen for too long at once because it’s really difficult to get past it and enjoy the content. It’s really too bad because otherwise I would have loved it. But performance matters for an audio book.

inspiring

I really appreciate the level of reflection that is encouraged in this book. i think it's better read section by sections with taking a break to hold space for oneself and unpack how you are affected.

Holistic approach with practical steps, lovely

I am so appreciative of this book - I found the stories relatable and wide ranging. The diversity and inclusion of a myriad of people and circumstances allowed me to open my mind and heart to the struggles within and in others. This is a very important work. Narration was well done. Thank you Dr. Bryant!

Good book

This book was great! It is a great starting point for healing. I took notes and went back to listen to certain parts more than once. At times throughout this book emotions may run high and you may become triggered, but her voice is soothing and has a calming effect. I would recommend this title.
