Healthy boundaries. We all know we should have them - in order to achieve work/life balance, cope with toxic people, and enjoy rewarding relationships with partners, friends, and family. But what do "healthy boundaries" really mean - and how can we successfully express our needs, say "no", and be assertive without offending others? Licensed counselor, sought-after relationship expert, and one of the most influential therapists on Instagram Nedra Glover Tawwab demystifies this complex topic for today's world.

Story
Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

An insatiable need for sex and love. Periods of overeating or starving. A pattern of unstable and painful relationships. Does this sound painfully familiar? Trauma counselor Kelly McDaniel has seen these traits over and over in clients who feel trapped in cycles of harmful behaviors - and are unable to stop. Many of us find ourselves stuck in unhealthy habits simply because we don't see a better way. With Mother Hunger, McDaniel helps women break the cycle of destructive behavior by taking a fresh look at childhood trauma and its lasting impact.

As it had for generations before her, a heaviness hung over Monica A. Coleman throughout her young life. As an adult, this rising star in the academy saw career successes often fueled by the modulated highs of undiagnosed bipolar disorder, as she hid deep depression that even her doctors skimmed past in disbelief. Serendipitous encounters with Black intellectuals like Henry Louis Gates Jr., Angela Davis, and Renita Weems were countered by long nights of stark loneliness. Only as Coleman began to face her illness was she able to live honestly and faithfully in the world.

But the outpouring of positive responses affirmed her own lived experience: that Black joy is not just a weapon of resistance, it is a tool for resilience. With this book, Tracey aims to gift her community with a collection of lyrical essays about the way joy has evolved, even in the midst of trauma, in her own life.

Publisher's Summary
A road map for dismantling the fear and shame that keep you from living a free and authentic life.
In the aftermath of stress, disappointment, and trauma, people often fall into survival mode, even while a part of them longs for more. Juggling multiple demands and responsibilities keeps them busy, but not healed. As a survivor of sexual assault, racism, and evacuation from a civil war in Liberia, Dr. Thema Bryant knows intimately the work involved in healing. Having made the journey herself, in addition to guiding others as a clinical psychologist and ordained minister, Dr. Thema shows you how to reconnect with your authentic self and reclaim your time, your voice, your life.
Signs of disconnection from self can take many forms, including people-pleasing, depression, anxiety, and resentment. Healing starts with recognizing and expressing emotions in an honest way and reconnecting with the neglected parts of yourself, but it can’t be done in a vacuum. Dr. Thema gives you the tools to meaningfully connect with your larger community, even if you face racism, sexism, heartbreak, grief, and trauma. Rather than shrinking in the face of life’s difficulties, you will discover in Homecoming the therapeutic approaches and spiritual practices to live a more expansive life characterized by empowerment, healthier relationships, gratitude, and a deeper sense of purpose.
Critic Reviews
“Dr. Thema Bryant is teaching people how to come back to themselves and handle challenges along the way of self-discovery. This book is a must-read for anyone going through a transition in life or seeking to learn more about themselves.” —Nedra Glover Tawwab, New York Times bestselling author of Set Boundaries, Find Peace
“A wise and empathic guide to (re-)discovering and befriending who you really are, no matter how much you may have drifted away due to stressful and painful life events, including not having been seen or valued by others, outright racism, violence, injustice, and traumas of all kinds. Dr. Bryant provides many possible pathways back to experiencing your original wholeness. Whatever path you take, it will be nothing less than the journey of a lifetime, starting from precisely where you are. This book arrives at the perfect time, if you are willing to let it guide you in opening and reconnecting to your essential beauty.” —Jon Kabat-Zinn, author of Full Catastrophe Living
"Dr. Thema's invitation in this book is grounding. She encourages us to release busyness and get present. The resounding message is we are not lost, we are home. This is a book that everyone needs to read." —Alexandra Elle, author of After the Rain

Transformative
This book fills in a gap with facilitating healing through racial trauma. I’ve already gifted a copy to my younger brother as he navigates his trauma. It definitely helps you name and recognize the various ways in which we disconnect to survive our trauma, but it helps you build the capacity to come home to your whole self. This work is liberatory and necessary!
