Publisher's Summary

Breakout author Bolu Babalola pens her vibrant debut novel, full of passion, humor, and heart, that centers on a young Black British woman who has no interest in love and unexpectedly finds herself caught up in a fake relationship with the man she warned her girls about.

Sharp-tongued (and secretly soft-hearted) Kiki Banjo has just made a huge mistake. An expert in relationship-evasion and the host of the popular student radio show, Brown Sugar, she’s made it her mission to make sure the women of the Afro-Caribbean Society at Whitewell University do not fall into the mess of “situationships”, players, and heartbreak. But when the Queen of the Unbothered kisses Malakai Korede, the guy she just publicly denounced as “The Wastemen of Whitewell” in front of every Blackwellian on campus, she finds her show and her reputation on the brink.

They’re soon embroiled in a fake relationship to try and salvage their reputations and save their futures. Kiki has never surrendered her heart before and a player like Malakai, no matter how charming he is or how incredible their connection is, won’t be the one to change that.

After surprisingly entertaining study sessions and intimate late-night talks at old-fashioned diners force Kiki to look beyond her own presumptions, is she ready to open herself up to something deeper?

A side-splittingly funny and sparkling debut novel, Honey and Spice is full of delicious tension and romantic intrigue that will make you weak at the knees.

I’m too old for this

I wasn’t quite prepared for what this book was about. College romance. Hate (but love really) at first sight. Hot, steamy, repetative, boring. Couldn’t be bothered ti complete. Then again, it’s 35 years ago I was at college. I’m probably not the right audience.

excellent book

I loved this book! It is very well written, easy to listen to and the story is well told. I am a 60 plus year woman and totally enjoyed the story of coming of age college students! The performance by Weruchi Opia is the best I've heard on Audible. She deserves an award for her performance; the voices of the characters were well defined throughout and inflections perfect!

Not my kind of book

Can’t believe this was a Reese Witherspoon book of month. Shallow , college drama for the most part. Slow story line.

Beautiful Writing, RomCom Makings

Babalola is such a beautiful writer with a way of bringing the scenes and characters to life with such details! The story was sweet, and feels like the making of a cult-classic romcom. The only thing I might change would be to have it a little shorter. IMO the beginning took a little too long to get all the background/setup in place.

Delicious Diasporic Delight

A love that feels like the perfectly riped fried plantain? Colour me impressed. This book was so swoon worthy! It made me wish I had read something similar as a young adult. I felt so seen in Kiki! I also loved her girl squad and how much room her character was given to make mistakes but still be so loveable. This is the rom com all young Black girls need!

Really Reese?

I thought this was a terrible pick for the Reese Witherspoon book club. I usually love all the books.
