Much like gravity, the law of attraction is a natural law of the universe, and one that governs every interaction you ever have. You can only attract into your experience those things that resonate with you on an emotional and or vibrational level. It is no coincidence that women who marry alcoholics had alcoholic fathers, grandfathers or uncles. What a child experiences in childhood determines that beings emotional set point; their point of attraction.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Alcoholism, drug abuse, and similar destructive practices can render families dysfunctional. When the children of these families become adults, they sometimes develop self-defeating survival tactics, such as low self-esteem or an obsession with controlling another person's behavior. To help those stuck in codependent cycles identify and eliminate such troubling issues from their relationships, Beattie shares wisdom gained from years of experience.

When you are codependent, you are unconscious. You do not know that emotional neglect has caused your brain to believe life is a threatening reality. Instead of believing you are worthy of love, you feel unworthy of love. You do not make choices because they might bring you joy. You play it small, try not to rock the boat, people-please, and focus on what you do not want to happen versus what you would like to happen.

The causes of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder range from severe neglect to monstrous abuse. Many survivors grew up in houses that were not homes-in families that were as loveless as orphanages and sometimes as dangerous. If you felt unwanted, unliked, rejected, hated, and/or despised for a lengthy portion of your childhood, trauma may be deeply engrained in your mind, soul, and body. This book is a practical guide to recovering from lingering childhood trauma. It is copiously illustrated with examples of the author's and his clients' journeys of recovering.

Content is excellent. Performance is outdated
I listened to this audiobook in one go and immediately recommended it to others. This is a fascinating book with a lot to gain from. For some reason though the second chapter seems to be a repeat of part of the first chapter, but from chapter 3 to the end, this book is an absolutely invaluable source of knowledge. You can tell from the sound effects that this was recorded in the early 80s, but you stop noticing that after a while. Also, the author reads quite slowly, so I'd recommend listening on 1.5 or 1.75 speed. Excellent book, will be listening again.

Beg & end feels like a sales pitch. Rest is good.
The book is read like they are trying to sell you something else. Middle chapters like 3 through most of 13 is the best and feels more like a real book. but definitely has enough good parts that I want to go back through this book again. so good definitely outweighs the bad.

The music is annoying
Has good info but the music in the background is very very distracting and unnecessary. there is a noise in the background and you can hear a quiet repeat of what he’s saying and other voices.
It’s a lot of good info but they talk too fast. I feel this type of book, for me, would be better if I bought the actual book

Lots of theory, not much "how to"
Only the last 2 chapters give actual advice on how to improve your own self-esteem. The rest is all theory on how self-esteem works and is built in children. Not all bad but not what I expected.
