Publisher's Summary

From the two-time Tony Award winner and the star of TV’s Younger, funny and intimate stories and reflections about how crafting has kept her sane while navigating the highs and lows of family, love, and show business (and how it can help you, too).

Whether she’s playing an “age-defying” book editor on television or dazzling audiences on the Broadway stage, Sutton Foster manages to make it all look easy. How? Crafting. From the moment she picked up a cross stitch needle to escape the bullying chorus girls in her early performing days, she was hooked. Cross stitching led to crocheting, crocheting led to collages, which led to drawing, and so much more. Channeling her emotions into her creations centered Sutton as she navigated the significant moments in her life and gave her tangible reminders of her experiences. Now, in this charming and poignant collection, Sutton shares those moments, including her fraught relationship with her agoraphobic mother;  a painful divorce splashed on the pages of the tabloids; her struggles with fertility; the thrills she found on the stage during hit plays like Thoroughly Modern Millie, Anything Goes, and Violet; her breakout TV role in Younger; and the joy of adopting her daughter, Emily. Accompanying the stories, Sutton has included crochet patterns, recipes, and so much more!

Witty and poignant, Hooked will leave listeners entertained as well as inspire them to pick up their own cross stitch needles and paintbrushes.

Critic Reviews

“While filming the last season of Younger, I had the honor of witnessing Sutton’s writing process and watching her crack herself open to share the monumental moments in her life. She is talented beyond belief, a comfy home cook, a wonderful friend, and now a crafting and crochet teacher to all. Just like the rest of us, Sutton’s journey is beautiful and complicated, an intricate pattern woven one thread at a time. Be prepared to get hooked.” (Hilary Duff)

"I have been a superfan of Sutton Foster ever since I watched her demolish the stage as the 'Star to Be' in Annie but, after reading Hooked, I feel like I finally met her. I will watch all of her future roles through a different lens because with this book she filled in the blanks and left this adoring audience member fully satisfied. I had no idea Sutton's beauty was informed by such early heartbreak and I am grateful to have her example of resilience as a guiding light. And, shoot, it looks like I have to bust out the yarn after all." (Jennifer Garner)

Hooked is an inspiring memoir about overcoming fear, finding true love, and the healing power of art.” (Lauren Graham)

Well crafted

You can just feel the love and attention she put into this book. Hearing her openness and vulnerability in her own voice felt very intimate, like a deep conversation with an old friend. Any Sutton fan will just love her more!

Fabulous

I loved this honest, painful at times, look into the life of a wonderful woman. The fact that the author also read her work was what made me want to listen. Beautiful and heartbreaking. A moving tribute to the people who help to make us who we are.

Excellent listen

Great story told by the author. I am learning to crochet right now. And while crochet is a small part that weaves it all together, I loved hearing Suttons story. I actually haven't really seen many thongs she's done, so I am excited to check some things out!

An intimate glimpse into Sutton’s life through crocheted loops and patterns.

Love love love they analogies and how looped right back around to the point of each story. She reads it like you’re just catching up like old friends. Overall, I’m just happy I get to be on the planet at the same time as her. Can’t wait to see what she does next!

A Story of a Beautiful Soul

Such a wonderful read - engaging, sincere, funny, and so much more. Unforgivingly relatable to anyone who has a habit of bouncing between craft projects and mediums.

Connection to crafting weak.

I was really interested in how this Broadway star used craft to transform negative emotions. In fact, this is a memoir with shallow anecdotes relating to craft used as a narrative tool. There was no weight to the consideration of craft. Her story is interesting and any fan would enjoy listening to it, especially in her own voice which is very expressive. I returned it, though, because it was not what I expected or wanted (and it also confused my Alexa whenever I wanted to listen to Hooked by Nir Ayal)

For the love of crafting

This memoir/crafting book was full of stories about how Sutton Foster's crafting passion carried her through her daily purpose. Learning about her struggles and the tools that she used was inspiring. She seemlessly weaves the stories of her life and the crafting projects that she was pursuing into a beautiful tapestry that shows her beauty inside and out.

What a heartwarming and inspiring story! Perfect to listen to while crocheting! Thank you for sharing your life story.
