Story
Following a long but successful book tour, Joe Biden has one more stop before he can return home: Chicago. His old pal Barack Obama has invited him to meet a wealthy benefactor whose endorsement could turn the tide for Joe if he decides to run for president. The two friends barely have time to catch up before another mystery lands in their laps: Obama’s prized Blackberry is stolen. When their number one suspect winds up full of lead on the South Side, the police are content to write it off as just another gangland shooting. But Joe and Obama smell a rat....

Miracle Springs is a place of healing. Strangers flock there hoping that the natural hot springs, five-star cuisine, and renowned spa can cure their ills. And, if none of that works, they often find their way to Miracle Books, where, over a fresh-baked scone from the Gingerbread House bakery, they exchange their stories with owner Nora Pennington in return for a carefully chosen book. That's Nora's special talent: prescribing the perfect novel to ease a person's deepest pain and lighten their heaviest burden.

It's about Tom Carmody, a New Yorker who, thanks to a computer error, wins the main prize in the Intergalactic Sweepstakes. Tom claims his prize before the error is discovered and is allowed to keep it. As their war of words escalates, London's most popular satirical cartoonist, A. J. Quill, skewers them both.

It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

Publisher's Summary
Advance Praise: A Publishers Weekly Summer Read 2018
"The Obama/Biden buddy-detective-story we never knew we needed." (Advance NetGalley review)
This mystery thriller reunites Vice President Joe Biden and President Barack Obama for a political mashup full of suspense, intrigue, and laugh-out-loud bromance. Vice President Joe Biden is fresh out of the Obama White House and feeling adrift when his favorite railroad conductor dies in a suspicious accident, leaving behind an ailing wife and a trail of clues. To unravel the mystery, "Amtrak Joe" re-teams with the only man he's ever fully trusted - the 44th president of the United States.
Together they'll plumb the darkest corners of Delaware, traveling from cheap motels to biker bars and beyond, as they uncover the sinister forces advancing America's opioid epidemic. Part noir thriller and part bromance novel, Hope Never Dies is essentially the first published work of Obama/Biden fan fiction - and a cathartic listen for anyone distressed by the current state of affairs.

Critic Reviews
"Perfect for those seeking escape from the realities of Washington, D.C., in 2018." (Publishers Weekly)
"The feel-good read of the summer." (Rebecca Dowling, owner, Hockessin Book Shelf)
"Probably the most unlikely pair of detectives I have ever seen." (Rincey Abraham, Book Riot)

Editor's Pick
Hold On PEople
"Hope Never Dies has a great title, one that brings you back to the heyday of the Hardy Boys while simultaneously playing into the Obama/Biden friendship meme. It is a delightful pulp crime novel, but one that goes far past the comical gimmick on its cover. Author Andrew Shaffer proves to be a truly effective crime writer. Even though the story focuses most of its creative energy on the voice and experience of our past president and vice president, its plotline doesn’t suffer for the fact. Narrator Joe Barrett does not even try to imitate Obama and Biden’s voices, which I felt was a letdown at first, but he has a gruff, noir-ish charm that was ultimately more compelling."

The sum is less than the whole
I found this book… disappointing. Like it tried to do two things and did neither as well as I had hoped it would. I found the idea of a Biden/Obama buddy-cop story a fun one. But… these characters didn't feel like their real-life namesakes. And the detective investigation story might have been more enjoyable without the distraction of the famous investigators. In both cases, there were overwrought clichés that seemed to be intentionally made fun of… but badly enough that I wondered if the author was just that bad of a writer.
It held my attention enough to get me through to the end (but that may have also been the novelty of being one of the first audiobooks from my Audible subscription). But I don't think I would recommend it to anybody. It was an amusing enough companion while driving on a road trip, but it just never quite lived up to its potential.

I miss my President and my Vice President and I want them back. This is a light, quick read that helps to divert from the ever present darkness that haunts the news with the new administration. I can hope they will show up to save us from the craziness, but in the meantime, a little mystery from two friends will be a nice diversion.

Bromance, not politics!
Many assume that this story is political because of who the main characters are. After listening to the audiobook, there isn't a political theme. It's just Joe Biden and Barack Obama trying to solve what could be a murder. It's entertaining, silly (the two have combat skills!?) and the narrator did a great job with his impression of Joe Biden. Looking forward to the next story!

A Better ‘Listen’ than ‘Read’
This is a fun, clever book that is a joy to listen to. Joe Barrett’s performance had me imagining (well, pretty much) that the Vice President was telling the story. And that made the experience more enjoyable than just reading it. (My husband has it on Kindle, I read a bit and told him he was missing out on a lot of fun.) Like “As You Wish” (by Cary Elwes et al.) the spoken performance adds a level of enjoyment and appreciation of the story that doesn’t transcend the written page.
Great literature it is not: Fun, informative at times, insightful on occasion it is.

The Obama/Biden Bromance
This was one of the best and funniest books of Summer, 2018, especially for those of us who miss the Obama administration. Former Vice President Biden reunites with his confidant, Former President Obama, to help solve the mysterious death of Biden's favorite railroad conductor back in Delaware.
The narration provided by Joe Barrett was perfect for this book. I hope he comes back for the next one. I am so excited Andrew Shafer is turning this book into a series!

So Much Fun!
Yes, it’s an implausible scenario but it’s great fun. There are enough accurate Biden and Obama observations and actions that make it seem like the guys really are on the job as amateur PI’s. Excellent “noir” narration.

more fun than bingo on a Tuesday night
Oh my, the old-timer similies and expressions were a hoot. This is a fun, light read. It was a good mystery too. I didn't really follow the Obama Biden partnership in real life while they were in office but this work of fiction brought some warm nostalgia. I know it's fiction though so I didn't get too worked up by any of the jabs at "the current administration". My only critique is that I had a hard time telling the characters apart when they spoke, meaning when one character was speaking and another character cut them off mid-sentence. Other narrators modulate their voice and accent to differentiate the characters and that wasn't done as much here.
