Publisher's Summary

Real-life is stranger and more frightening than fiction, and this book serves to cement that principal even further. In this compilation, there are 11 cases of some of the most deplorable, unjust and violent crimes I’ve come across. From cannibals to rapists to the sickest, most twisted criminals you’ve not yet heard of, you’ll read about them all in this book.

I’ll tell you the story of Rurik Jutting, a British banker living in Hong Kong who held two women hostage, tortured them and raped them over a number of days. You’ll learn about Issei Sagawa, a Japanese cannibal who killed and ate a woman - but walks free on the streets today. Then there’s the vile three-week torture of an Australian woman who, when she was eventually rescued, paramedics initially thought she was dead. You can also read about the ‘Hello Kitty’ murder, which is as bizarre as it sounds - and as equally haunting.

But please be warned, the cases in this book are highly disturbing and include graphic and distressing descriptions. Please take this trigger warning seriously as this book depicts horrific crimes that involve sexual abuse, domestic abuse and graphic violence throughout. This book is intended to explore the evil in this world and expose the heinous behavior some people are capable of. Please heed this warning before continuing to listen.

The book fits under the following categories:

  • Serial killers
  • True crime
  • Murder and mayhem
  • True murder cases
  • True crime biography

Why read fiction when reality out-does it ?

I would highly recommend listening to this short book. The well curated stories enlighten that evil
knows no gender, no sex, no age and that most perpetrators hide their depravation as normal society contributors.

As the book finished and the author hoped we liked her recounts it was difficult to agree that indeed this record was to be liked, but her work and research have to be commanded.

These true international stories were challenging to listen to, some impossible to comprehend.
It was disturbing to clearly see the unfairness of the justice systems around the world.

Michelle Lee, the narrator, did a fantastic job smoothly and unemotionaly recounting these disgusting facts. The apparent detachment helped going through the inhumane stories.

Read before using a credit

The sample is definitely enticing, but it is misleading. It states that these are relatively unknown cases and not ones that are “mainstream.” Seven of the 11 cases covered in this “book” are in fact mainstream. Over half are likely easily recognizable by even the most causal true crime podcast fan. Three are so common they regularly show up in IG/twitter posts by those accounts of the true crime/murder genre. Another is so well-known it appears in a very popular Netflix show. So I was disappointed that I already knew the majority of these cases.

The narrator’s delivery is excellent and is the highlight of the book. However, whomever wrote the script seemed to take some shortcuts. If you look at the Wikipedia page of these cases as you listen, it’s basically read word-for-word with a little paraphrasing mixed in. Not to mention, on the lesser known cases, I googled to read more and the main article I saw on each was basically word-for-word the script in this book.

This is basically a podcast. But one that has listened to other episodes on the same topics then tried to recreate those with slight variations. The only benefit of getting this book would be to save the time you’d browse through different episodes.

Well done!!

This is a well done crime synopsis. There were definitely some stories in here I was unfamiliar with and a few I was aware of. The narrator does a great job telling the story. I look forward to more books from this author.

chilling and informative

this was not only well written, it was well narrated. I have a new found respect for people who research these stories as I'm sure they cause many sleepless nights. I would recommend this book for anyone who is stable and intrigued by the horrific nature of murderers and sociopaths.

No story here

There is no story here. Hardly any background information is given, so if you are interested in psychology, forget it. It’s all just pure brutality and mostly sexual brutality at that. I had to stop in the middle of chapter five … just not worth it to hear these incredibly disturbing things with no insight into human nature (or human evil) given. I’m deleting from my library without finishing.

Unknown cases

I like that they're all cases that I never heard. Disturbing how humans can treat each other. Animals have more sense.

Disturbing but eye opening

Very disturbing, but also very real. An eye opener of how easy one can be manipulated into doing something.

Fire the narrator.

Interesting stories, but infortunally the narrator is so nearly monotonous that you tune it out

great book the only down side was how short each chapter was I think it would be better to group shorter together and and more murder stories.

Wasted Credit...

I enjoyed the book but honestly felt it was a waste of a credit. Though the stories recounted are unpleasant, I have encountered far worse, without a sensational title.

Fascinating read

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this. I feel that although the cases were horrific, the book was written really well and was very informative, without being too gruesome.

It is exactly as it says it is.

The stories are told nicely. No sensationalism, no extra drama and horror, just the plain, non glorified facts. For me, this shows a sense of respect for the victims and emphasizes the horrific acts carried out.

Great listen for the price!

I've listened to an awful lot of true crime books and enjoyed this one.
It steps away from the well known crimes and gives you insight into the lesser known ones. Some of which are really macabre!
