Rick Dial is faced with an impossible choice: save the life of his best friend, Molly...or save the free world.

Rick Dial's career as a superstar quarterback ended when a car accident left him unable to walk. But his uncanny gaming ability caught the attention of a secret government organization trying to stop a high-tech terrorist attack on America. He's been to the fantastical cyber world called the MindWar Realm...and returned to Real Life victorious.

But the stakes have just gone up. Another attack is imminent, and Rick is the only one who can stop it. How can he, though, when terrorists have kidnapped his best friend, Molly ,and are threatening to kill her if Rick returns to the Realm? As Molly uses every resource of mind and body to outwit her brutal captors, Rick races against time inside a nightmare video game where a fate worse than death may be waiting for him.

Hundreds of miles apart, both will have to test the power of their faith and the strength of their spirits. They're being forced to a moment of sacrifice...one that could cost them everything.

Young adult VR story - amateur performance

This is my first Andrew Klavan book. It will also be my last.

A VR adventure story for young adults. Part 2 of a trilogy. I won’t be reading the others.
The action is slowed down by irrelevant details that are too obviously used to puff the story out: a character, we are irrelevantly told, bends down to tie a shoelace or curl her hair behind her ear. The reader naturally thinks this detail will have some bearing later. But it doesn’t.
The dialogue and narrative is also B-movie quality: not bad but entirely predictable.

As is the narration: “he said in a thick Russian accent”, narrated with no trace of any different accent! Or, “he whispered”, said in exactly the same tone of voice as before! A monotonous one.

Klavan’s fine humour never makes an appearance, except in Molly’s naming of the thugs who kidnap her. Shame.

Particularly irritating was the lack of any pause between chapters: “he fell to the rocks below chapter ten Molly got to her feet ...”

On the plus side, the book has no foul language or sex and it has Christian themes and characters which are background, not foreground, at least up to chapter 12 which is as far as i got before quitting.
