Publisher's Summary

Hot Cold Heavy Light collects 100 writings - some long, some short - that taken together form a group portrait of many of the world’s most significant and interesting artists. From Pablo Picasso to Cindy Sherman, Old Masters to contemporary masters, paintings to comix, and saints to charlatans, Schjeldahl ranges widely through the diverse and confusing art world, an expert guide to a dazzling scene.

No other writer enhances the listener's experience of art in precise, jargon-free prose as Schjeldahl does. His reviews are more essay than criticism, and he offers engaging and informative accounts of artists and their work. For more than three decades, he has written about art with Emersonian openness and clarity. A fresh perspective, an unexpected connection, a lucid gloss on a big idea awaits the listener in every minute of this big, absorbing, buzzing audiobook.

needs pictures

The writing is great, that isn't the problem. The problem is that it doesn't make a good audiobook - i kept having to pause the book, stop what I was doing, and google the work of art being discussed. Discussion of visual art is not the best subject matter for an audiobook in my opinion.

Didn’t want it to end

I listened to this book each night as I painted. It was so wonderful that I didn’t want it to end. But sadly, it ended.

NO CHAPTER HEADINGS

Again, there are no chapter headings, so you cannot navigate the book. Poor showing from Audible, it deters me from buying further books. Audible needs to move from being 'good' to being 'great'. As things stand, I wouldn't recommend Audible to a friend. Get you act together...

Some very interesting essays and reviews about a wide range of art and artists

Some really interesting pieces in this collection. Some long some short. The only thing I would say is that it covers really all of art history, so some bits I skipped because I’m not interested in what I call classical technical reproduction, as apposed to proper art which takes thought

Intellectual but not academic

Humble, humorous, humane and razor sharp. Peter Schjeldahl makes you reflect, makes you think. I recommend this book to every art lover out there.

Excellent

I loved everything about it, except that it ended. If only he could be commissioned - even forced - to keep writing. As insightful about art as about life and thought and just being in the world.
