Ricky Desmond has been through this all before. If he could just get through to his mother, he could convince her that he doesn't belong at Brookline. From the man who thinks he can fly to the woman who killed her husband, the other patients are nothing like him; all he did was lose his temper just a little bit, just the once. But when Ricky is selected by the sinister Warden Crawford for a very special program - a program that the warden claims will not cure him but perfect him - Ricky realizes that he may not be able to wait for his mom a second longer.

Before Miss Peregrine gave them a home, the story of peculiars was written in the Tales. Wealthy cannibals who dine on the discarded limbs of peculiars. A fork-tongued princess. I began to suspect something was wrong with the gothic building when its family fled in the middle of the night, the children screaming, the mother crying. They never came back to pack up their furniture. A new occupant, Anna, has just moved in. I paid her a visit to warn her about the building. I didn't expect us to become friends, but we did. And now that Marwick House is waking up, she's asked me to stay with her. I never intended to become involved with the building or its vengeful, dead inhabitant. But now I have to save Anna.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Publisher's Summary
An all-new creepy fantasy series from the New York Times best-selling author of Asylum.
After escaping a harsh school where punishment was the lesson of the day, 17-year-old Louisa Ditton is thrilled to find employment as a maid at a boarding house.
But soon after her arrival at Coldthistle House, Louisa begins to realize that the house’s mysterious owner, Mr. Morningside, is providing much more than lodging for his guests. Far from a place of rest, the house is a place of judgment, and Mr. Morningside and his unusual staff are meant to execute their own justice on those who are past being saved.
Louisa begins to fear for a young man named Lee who is not like the other guests. He is charismatic and kind, and Louisa knows that it may be up to her to save him from an untimely judgment. But in this house of distortions and lies, how can Louisa be sure who to trust?

One heck of A writer
Amazing storyteller, crisp defined characters, and awesome pacing. Narration sounded a little to cheerful for the subject matter, yet didn't detract from the haunting and original story. Worth a credit.

good story lacking performance
I found the performance was lacking due to the performer putting the wrong voice inflections in character speech as well as doing the same accent for different charters of different ages. it made it a little confusing.
I loved the story though.

One of the characters is Satan..lots of the occult
I just wanted to put that out there for people like me who don't mind dark stories so long as they do not include continuous references to the actual Bible and even Satan. Just makes me kind of uncomfortable. Buyer beware if you are sensitive to that kind of content!
The story had some pretty good aspects to it but kind of missed the mark for me. I felt like I listened to the whole thing just because I bought it. There were times when the story got really good, and then it just fell off or there was too much talk of the occult. If you are into that sort of thing, you may enjoy this story more.
I wasn't a huge fan of this narrator. Whenever she spoke as one of the characters, all of her sentences ended like questions. I am sure the Irish know how to end their sentences without questions.
The main character annoyed me. She seemed very...stubborn. Not in the, "I am going to stick to my wits because its right" way, but more "I am afraid and I don't want to hear anything or listen to anyone" kind of way. Dunno, she just wasn't a very enjoyable for me. Then what was supposed to be her big reveal had already been revealed...at the beginning of the book. But, then it was like convenient; not useful to the story.
I did enjoy the imagery of the ferryman. But, I feel like there were a lot of questions that were not answered. A lot of loose ends at the end of the story. I just didn't enjoy this book very much and it is NOT just because of the religious aspects. The story line just didn't wow me. I got this book because I enjoyed Asylum and figured this different wavelength of writing for this writer might be interesting to see. It wasn't :(

I didn’t know if I would really like this book all that much but I loved it! I’ve already got the next book and the rest is in my wish list and my ears are patiently awaiting me to hurry up and keep listening so I can get to the next one!!!! The ending got me hard! I kept trying to be a detective during the book to figure out each character that visited Coldthistle house, some I got wrong but some I got right and it’s such fun! Was a more than stellar voice Actress, Thrilling plot and not to mention the dark maqam of things from going sad to worse. Louisa is all of us when our backs are to the wall, loved the symbolisms and little snippets of secrets here and there. Made me buy the entire series because I need to know more.
