Story
Shelby works as a dog walker in northern California, and she’s just finished up her bi-weekly trip to the park with a husky named Pluto. When she brings him back to his house, she finds his owner - Todd Burke, a well-known local businessman and founder of an organic supplements company - lying on the bathroom floor, dead. A detective arrives on the scene. As she interviews Shelby, the body is inspected by a medical examiner, and more cops search Todd’s home, it becomes clear that the victim’s life was less picture-perfect than his clean-cut persona might lead you to believe.

Rocket science is often celebrated as the ultimate triumph of technology. But it's not. Rather, it's the apex of a certain thought process - a way to imagine the unimaginable and solve the unsolvable. It's the same thought process that enabled Neil Armstrong to take his giant leap for mankind, that allows spacecraft to travel millions of miles through outer space and land on a precise spot, and that brings us closer to colonizing other planets.

I was a bit torn at first.
I didn't love everything in this book. There is a lot of passages I regard as pretty obvious and I didn't love some of the "this will make you a better salesmen" presentation. It's also ironic that I found an audio book on speaking more palatable at 1.15x - 1.25x speed...
That said, I took several important things from this book and I'll likely use some of them forever. I'm trying to reduce my use of words like should, just, only, nobody, anybody, etc.. I'm also working on my listening and making my speech "more powerful." This audio book has its flaws but it's undeniably useful.

Fantastic. I now have a whole new perspective on sound and how it influences us. Very informative, well structured and practical advice. Definitely warrants a second or third listen.

Excellent.
Best ever non-fiction narrated audiobook.
I found the information extremely valuable and applicable to everyday life as much as public speaking. Wish i'd known this earlier, and would recommend this book to anyone really.
Only thing I found a bit overkill was the amount of acronyms.
Thanks Julian, I've learned so much, and continue to grow as I apply this. And agree that this world would be a better place if more people would learn how to listen.

A struggle
I listened to this book with the hopes of learning. However Julian Treasure’s accent was so annoying it would put me in a bad mood. Having had 2 grandfathers who were Scottish, never did I hear this pompous, exaggerated voice. Ugh. Furthermore, he did nothing but plug the CDs, the workbooks, TED talks and NPR. So it was a nah for me.

30 mins content stretched for hours
This book confirms that you can get all you need from Julian Treasure by watching his TED talks. This book uses the same facts over and over again. It is full of so much padding, repetition and alluding to future content that it very quickly becomes tiring.
As a narrator, I also find that, despite his efforts, he's not actually that great an orator. His delivery is overly performed, like someone who is desperate to use the widest possible range at all times. His voice sounds to me like the oral ecquivalent of an episode of the podcast RadioLab, where every sentence needs a change of tone, or a sound effect, because he is terrified we might drift off. Again, it is draining...
Within the first couple of chapters he tells you about 5 times each that:
"Modern headphones can play music too loud"
"I live in the Orkney Isles" - Not sure why he keeps saying this!
"Your voice is just breath"
"You can find out more on my website, here is the address, use the password - 'conscious'"
The book also frequently veers into areas outside of "How to be Heard" and comes across as weak life advice. Ignoring your inner critic, decreasing your screen time and topics such as these often pop up, are barely explored, then disappear. Rather than soft padding like this, perhaps Treasure should have hired a more vicious editor!

Tips from an interpersonal communication master
Like many, I imagine, I read this on the back of Julian's popular Ted Talks. I had high expectations of the book and wasn't disappointed.
I also enjoyed the pleasure of listening to Julian talk through the material. As a trainer in interpersonal communication I found it eye opening, entertaining and most importantly practical.
This Audiobook edition also has Julian's interviews with some of the most popular Ted talkers.
Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in speaking publicly or desire to communicate more effectively and with greater empathy.
