Story
Pocket Change Collective is a series of small books with big ideas from today's leading activists and artists. In this installment, Beyond the Gender Binary, Alok Vaid-Menon challenges the world to see gender not in black and white, but in full color. Taking from their own experiences as a gender-nonconforming artist, they show us that gender is a malleable and creative form of expression. The only limit is your imagination.

As a young child in North Carolina, Jacob Tobia wasn't the wrong gender, they just had too much of the stuff. Barbies? Yes. Playing with bugs? Absolutely. Getting muddy? Please. Princess dresses? You betcha. Jacob wanted it all, but because they were "a boy", they were told they could only have the masculine half. Acting feminine labelled them "a sissy" and brought social isolation. It took Jacob years to discover that being "a sissy" isn't something to be ashamed of. It's a source of pride.

Author Kate Bornstein ushers listeners on a funny, fearless, and wonderfully scenic journey across the terrains of gender and identity. On one level, Gender Outlaw details Bornstein's transformation from heterosexual male to lesbian woman, from a one-time IBM salesperson to a playwright and performance artist. But this particular coming-of-age story is also a provocative investigation into our notions of male and female, from a self-described nonbinary transfeminine diesel femme dyke who never stops questioning our cultural assumptions.

When Jackson Bird was 25, he came out as transgender to his friends, family, and anyone in the world with an internet connection. Assigned female at birth and having been raised a girl, he often wondered if he should have been born a boy. Jackson didn’t share this thought with anyone because he didn’t think he could share it with anyone. Growing up in Texas in the 1990s, he had no transgender role models. He barely remembers meeting anyone who was openly gay, let alone being taught that transgender people existed outside of punchlines.

A must read!
Jeffrey Marsh has written an inspiring book full of wisdom, compassion, and love! I wish I had this book when I was younger, but even in my mid 30s, I have found it to be incredibly helpful and supportive. Jeffrey shares their own experiences to help the reader navigate the ups and downs of life, and the inner turmoil we all go through when we feel we don't fit in or haven't gotten it right. They provide helpful advice and insights so that we can live a life free from crippling guilt, shame, or confusion. I especially like the segments called Hero, Heroine where they bring in the example of real life people throughout history who embraced who they are despite pressure to conform to society's standards. I recommend this book to any teen who is struggling with finding themselves and loving who they are as well as any adult who is having these similar struggles as well. Jeffrey reminds us that we are good people, and that we deserve our own unconditional love!

If you're wanting to continue the journey of becoming all you've been created to become, I believe this book is for you!! Jeffrey Marsh shares practical tips for unburdening ourselves with the unhealthy expectations of others - and the unhealthy expectations of ourselves as well. They provide examples from their own stories and witty nonsensical examples that help us see the absurdity of the way we've chosen to construct things in this realm. We can do things differently. We can do things better. And this is one resource to help us forward - embracing our beautiful, fabulous selves in the process!

Apparently life is "equally unfair to everyone"
This audiobook creates a strawman of what sadness looks like and continues claiming it is you.
Apparently none of those problems are real and everything you fear isn't as bad as the fear itself 🙄
Apparently you can just make a commitment to not struggle anymore.
Oh and "never yell at your boss" given as unironic advice 🤢

Credibility absolutely destroyed
I’ve been following Jeffrey on Instagram for a while. I adored their content and advocacy for non-binary folk. I too am non-binary.
I finally listened to their book and the story was delightful, except, they used ableist language a lot, it became very jarring, specifically the word ‘dumb’. I gave them some gentle and loving feedback by DM on Instagram having interacted with them there before. Their response was to block me.
I can’t tell you how shocked and disappointed I am at this level of fragility from someone advocating kindness and acceptance of each other and how to validate one another. This decision and utter disregard for the harm they are causing to some disabled folk has destroyed their credibility for me, even though they were such an important influence in my non-binary journey. I’m shook. I’m deeply hurt. We white queer and non-binary people cannot fight for our liberation and acceptance without being intersectional and also striving not to be racist or ableist. This decision is contrary to everything they are teaching us in this book and personally, I don’t preach what I cannot practice. I do not subscribe to cancel culture and in spite of the hurt caused to me, I still feel that Jeffrey contributes significantly to non-binary understanding, however, in the circumstances, I consider this review absolutely fair and measured. Jeffrey, if you read this, I hope one day that you see the harm caused and that you accept that you too have some learning to do and disabled people are worthy of validating in the same was as we non-binary people are. I’ll always be open to connecting again. With love and honesty.

Jeffrey Marsh’s narrative ability is stunning.
His voice is soothing and reassuring
The stories he tells will make you smile to yourself.
You’ll find yourself nodding and shaking your head, laughing, shedding a tear... but most of all you’ll start to look at yourself differently
I will be revisiting this book over and over and I just know each time his words will resonate more.
I’ve just finished this on audiobook and I can’t wait to start it again!

I found Jeffery randomly via his Instagram and was hooked by their kind voice and real and touching messages that seemed to really be talking to me personally. Their book does exactly the same, they talk to the listener or reader personally and you believe their words as you knowh they have felt everything we all feel.
The pacing is wonderful. It has just enough of their own story for you to understand how and why they know how hard life can be and there is so much insightful wisdom and understanding there. its like a warm hug from Jeffrey in each chapter with tools and exercises that are helpful and rewarding. it's a great listen and I know I will listen again and again when I need to.

Absolutely beautiful
I cannot stress how much I love and appreciate this book AND Jeffrey Marsh.
What an amazing human being and I consider myself so lucky to be on this Earth at the same time as them x
This book is for anyone and everyone. No matter where they are on their journey in life.
Do yourself a favour and listen. Learn. Grow.
