Story
The contemporary art market is an international juggernaut, throwing off multimillion-dollar deals as wealthy buyers move from fair to fair, auction to auction, party to glittering party. But none of it would happen without the dealers - the tastemakers who back emerging artists and steer them to success, often to see them picked off by a rival. Dealers operate within a private world of handshake agreements, negotiating for the highest commissions. Michael Shnayerson, a longtime contributing editor to Vanity Fair, writes the first-ever definitive history of their activities.

This is a book about what it feels like to sit in your studio or classroom, at your wheel or keyboard, easel or camera, trying to do the work you need to do. It is about committing your future to your own hands, placing free will above predestination, choice above chance. It is about finding your own work.

Story
Think of The War of Art as tough love...for yourself. Since 2002, The War of Art has inspired people around the world to defeat "resistance"; to recognize and knock down dream-blocking barriers and to silence the naysayers within us. Resistance kicks everyone's butt, and the desire to defeat it is equally as universal. The War of Art identifies the enemy that every one of us must face, outlines a battle plan to conquer this internal foe, then pinpoints just how to achieve the greatest success.

Story
Creative work doesn't come with a guarantee. But there is a pattern to who succeeds and who doesn't. And engaging in the consistent practice of its pursuit is the best way forward. Based on the breakthrough Akimbo workshop pioneered by legendary author Seth Godin, The Practice will help you get unstuck and find the courage to make and share creative work. Godin insists that writer's block is a myth, that consistency is far more important than authenticity, and that experiencing the imposter syndrome is a sign that you're a well-adjusted human.

Critic Reviews
"How to Be an Artist has relevance way beyond the art world. With his typical clarity and compassion, Jerry Saltz outlines a path for anyone who wants to dedicate their lives to chasing something they believe in. Even as a chef, I have Jerry’s advice ringing through my brain at all times." (David Chang)
"In How to Be an Artist, Jerry Saltz is so right-on it scares me." (Cindy Sherman)
“Inspiration leaps off the pages from Jerry Saltz’s new book on creativity. One wants to say he’s revealing secrets, but really, he’s revealing intuition - intuition formed from decades of thinking about art. This book is for the artist or non-artist, for the person who gets plain English, for the person who understands that practical talk can coax out the mystical messages that lie underneath.” (Steve Martin)

Terrible Book Waste of Money
When I looked at this book, I saw a lot of 5 star reviews but never knew that he has thousands of loyal followers on social media so be cautious, my reviews are honest and to help other people out, not to promote a product. I seen some of his videos and I thought that this might be an insightful book but I was wrong. He rambles on a lot and doesn't go into detail and into techniques in art but in fairness, he's not an artist, just a reviewer for a website. The book is by no means an artist's guide. I figured if I could just learn one thing from the book then it may be worth it but no, he says to "get to work you big babies" and talks about getting to work and quoting others but yeah, it's not a guide for any artist. There are so many things that he never mentions that others in the art world talk about for free, waste of money.

It’s probably what you think.
With works such as this, there’s always someone - usually several someones - who feel there’s nothing new, that it’s just a rehash of every other similar book out there. And they’re pretty much always right. This is no different.
Now, the authors of the books clearly don’t agree (unless they’ve written cheap cash-ins), and they’re probably mostly right, too. It’s just that, from the author’s perspective, the differences are large and meaningful. From further away those differences diminish, and often disappear.
This is a short piece. The author’s narration is perfectly fine. There’s no harm in taking that chance, leaning in and getting up close, seeing if you can catch a glimpse of the thing from something like the author’s POV. Maybe you’ll uncover the spark you need. That spark might just be magical.
Might as well try.

Genuine voice
It was a genuine account on what it is to be an artist and the vitality art has. The fact that the narrator is Jerry Saltz, the author himself adds to this genuine voice, relatable and revealing. I would recommend, not only to artists, but to all creatives. What resonates with me is the one that talks about limitation of time, it got me thinking of working quicker; in these times of isolation and limitation. Hope everyone has a similar experience

Thank you Jerry Saltz, I needed this
I know most of what he wrote... and was honestly hesitant to listen to a man tell me “how to be an artist” as a mother of 4, 3 of them 9 & under & currently home full time. But his words were honest, to the point reminders, that I found I needed reminding of after all. As 1 of thousands of parents who found themselves drowning in 10x the work during Covid vs having extensive free time for “all the hobbies”, the weight of this has felt especially crushing to my own artistic drive. I am generally quite tenacious & don’t give an anything about what people feel about what I’m working on atm, but this is drowning on a whole different level & this book was the air I personally needed right now.

Jerry tells it like it is, and like he is. No attempts to grandstand, although I was impressed with his knowledge, street-smart wisdom, personal history, and humor. He writes without all the bullshit, hype, flowery, hollow, grandiose, perplexing language that is too often used when describing art and artists. Every word in this book rings true and often makes me laugh out loud. I have listened repeatedly and also ordered the book so I can mark it up with my personal highlights and notes. I rarely take time to write reviews but this book deserves my praise. So now that I have finished my first cup of coffee, it's time to work. In my head I can hear Jerry saying something like "get to work you big baby". Exactly.

I loved it!
45 yrs old. Went to art school and now taking an oil painting course for realism…. Still can’t get unblocked to produce original work!!!
While listening to the book I started doodling with my brush markers and I created a new creature that I will be replicating in acrylic or oils. For now a study and then we shall see. I’m pretty isolated from my art school community Atm and this book was the pep talk I needed! Thank you Jerry!
