Publisher's Summary

A young debutante makes a hasty exit from London only to create new headlines on the Continent.

After being expelled from a young ladies’ academy, a disgraced Miss Arabella Jardine is whisked away to the Continent until the controversy in London subsides. However, it doesn’t take long for Arabella to shock her family all over again when an encounter in Switzerland with the irresistible rakehell-in-exile Earl of Langdale leads to a compromising situation. Despite his wicked reputation, Lord Langdale is the sort of man she has dreamed of marrying.

When Gabriel Holmes-Fitzgerald is caught in flagrante delicto with the apparently prim and proper Miss Arabella Jardine, he’s obliged to offer for the young lady’s hand. Unprincipled cad that he is, Gabriel is no stranger to scandal. He’ll do the right thing and wed Arabella, although he secretly despairs his tainted soul will corrupt and ultimately destroy her.

When Arabella’s life is unexpectedly threatened by an unscrupulous enemy from the past, one thing becomes crystal clear to Gabriel: the worst torment of all will be losing the woman he loves. And he would do anything, even sell his soul to the Devil himself, to save her.

Excellent!

I loved this book! The characters are delightful, funny, real. One of the things I love about Ms Bennett’s writing is that there are always many unexpected twists & turns. Even when common literary elements appear—such as the return of a former lover—she always adds something different so things transpire in unique ways. These are not stereotypical characters and that is very refreshing! I laughed out loud many times and wept throughout.

The narrator still mispronounces many words (parents’, claret, on dit), but most of the time it’s a one-off.

don't believe the bad reviews

it is wonderful for a smutty regency romance with a little suspense thrown in. not instant love but not drug out with rediculous assumptions either. the sex is hot without being porn. the book takes some modern liberties that you just have to overlook for the good of the rest. if this is the genre you are looking for it is worth the credit but if it is not then save the credit and bad review.

Narrator needs to learn how to pronounce words.

I understand that the English pronunciation of some words is different than the American pronunciation, for example, we pronounce "Valet" as va-lay and the English pronounce it va-let but Claret wine should be pronounced clar-et. Also in one text it was clear that the word should have been "palaces" not "places". This did not ruin the story for me but I'm frustrated that there does not seem to be a review or editing process on these readings. Also the Scottish accent of the heroine was affected and overdone.

It’s okay.

This book was fine. Nothing great, but not awful either. The Hero is written a bit over the top on some of the emotional issues, but I guess the story only had so much time for large emotional growth. Like most books of its kind don’t read this if you are looking for an authentic period read. Sexy time is on the more graphic end of the scale, but it doesn’t eclipse the story.

Interesting characters and overall great romance!

I like this series’s, the heroines are unusually smart and witty, and I like that they’re so fiercely independent—even during such oppressive times for womankind. The heroes or love interest are pretty different as well, strong and virile but yet so irresistibly vulnerable. I’ve enjoyed everyone of these stories—Sophie, Olivia and now Arabella. I can’t wait to read Charlie’s story...that’s going to be a treat!

I almost stopped but so glad I didn’t

My first impression of the narrator was horrible but I soon adjusted and realized she’s extremely good. Think it was because I’d been listening to several books by a totally different female voice & different romantic genre. This is my first by this author but I really really like her. She brings interesting historic scenes to life with great characters and some very hot sexy times. There’s also some mystery involved which made it an all around great book.

pronunciation

I wish the reader would learn how to pronounce the words correctly, otherwise story was good.

Well......

Superb performance by the reader! She brings everything to life. I love how the characters meet it just took a bit to get us there. There's enough friction & question between the characters to keep you wondering how the story is going to play out.

Arabella makes a ridiculous request after the wedding. It's made even more ridiculous when she amends it. Gabriel stupidly agrees to both. At this point I almost returned the book because the characters flipped too far from who they were. He goes from rake hell to wuss & her from innocence to ignorant.

The characters get enough back to themselves to keep me reading & finish the book with a satisfactory sigh at the end. Aside from that one area it was a good book. I'm going to read the next one which hopefully won't be like that.
