Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
The gripping new psychological suspense from the Sunday Times best-selling author of No Further Questions and The Evidence Against You.
What do you do when you can't run and you can't hide?
Lauren's daughter, Zara, witnessed a terrible crime. But speaking up comes with a price, and when Zara's identity is revealed online, it puts a target on her back.
The only choice is to disappear.
To keep Zara safe, Lauren will give up everything and everyone she loves, even her husband.
There will be no goodbyes. Their pasts will be rewritten. New names, new home, new lives.
The rules are strict for a reason. They are being hunted. One mistake - a text, an Instagram like - could bring their old lives crashing into the new.
They can never assume someone isn't watching, waiting.
As Lauren will learn, disappearing is easy. Staying hidden is harder....

You'll be hooked to the very last sentence.
Wow, I get through 150 audible books per year and this is amongst the best I've listened to for a long time. Gillian keeps you hooked right up to the last sentence. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Genuine Psychological Thriller
So well written! I actually felt myself in the position of Witness Protection. The agonising choices of who to take, who to leave behind, where to draw lines. Agreeing to rules that absolutely demand the old life being left behind and forgotten without any contact whatsoever - especially difficult with today's social media.
That much I expected from the book, but additionally it turned out to be a really good thriller as well. You could call it a Domestic Thriller, but NOT just with the woman as the lead character, in this book we get the perspective from ALL family members in turn.
This is not a police investigation, it's better than that. The family are the protagonists with twists and turns as threats emerge from the footballing gang who we already know are murderers. Very real threats that we as listeners can relate to. It's a book with multiple threads, but despite this, not hard to follow.
Very good surprise ending.
There are a few editing issues in this recording, some words repeated, some completely missing (e.g. at 3:24:13 we get 12 seconds of silence). These issues did not unduly affect enjoyment of the book.

Okay!
Looking at all the rave 5 star reviews, I must be missing something. I can see the story is good enough, but it’s not doing it for me. I reached chapter 21 and haven’t really found any of the characters very engaging. The quality of the writing is good, but I am not finding the story particularly interesting. The premise is fine, but, as far as I can tell at this stage, there isn’t anywhere unexpected to go with it. I will leave it and move on to another book.

Why the rave reviews?
This has to be the not much happens book of the year.
Returned
Absolutely brain numbingly boring.
I struggled on to get to a good bit but no nothing is forthcoming.
Just repeating over and over again about what happened.
Given up.

I thought it was brilliant 👏
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel , apart from few minor points, I wouldn't change anything. The twists brought real tension to my body, I was literally on edge. I could feel the emotions experienced by the characters , the disappointment , anxiety resentment and the rest. One of the best books I've listened to in 2020.
Narrator Nicola also did an amazing job. I'll be looking out for more books narrated by her.

Outstanding
The best book by Gillian McAllister by far. The storyline kept me awake for three nights trying to finish the book to ease the suspense. A triumph.

Just brilliant
Omg this book really is unputdownable! It was recommended by one of the members of The Book Club on Facebook and I bought the Audible version and couldn't stop listening. Eventually, though, I had to when I noticed it was 3am, but I finished it the next day.
Crime and psychological thrillers are my favourite genre but can sometimes be a bit cliched, but this one is original, focusing on witness protection and how difficult it is for all those involved. It is wonderfully written and I became totally absorbed in the lives of the characters, all beautifully portrayed by the author, and was really rooting for them. I did guess the ending but it didn't spoil it for me. It's one of my favourite books of the year so far. My first book by Gillian McAllister, but definitely not the last!
The Audible version if narrated by the wonderfully talented Nicola Walker and she brought it all to life.

Why so drawn out?
Narration was so slow and drawn out I had to speed it up. Good storyline - but for me it was diluted by the very many descriptions of everything. At one point in the book, the person should have jumped into action, but instead there is a lengthy description about how she feels as a mother. That was quite annoying (for me anyway).

OMG!
OMG is not an expression I use normally but it is so appropriate for this great book. I could not put it down. Emotion, tension, thrills and love, because apart from being a thriller it is also a love story.
Just the best in every way as indicated by my 5 star rating across the board.
I smiled and I cried, I absolutely believed. It is a really brilliant read and you could do yourself a huge favour by buying and listening to it.

Ok but too long…
The story was good but it dragged on for a bit in the middle. To much agonising by the main characters!

Wonderful
I have just finished How to Disappear & enjoyed the story enormously. However it was the brilliant audio provided by the amazing Nicola Walker that raised this book to the next level. She made the characters truly come alive and enhanced this story in a perfect manner. Thank you.
