The idea that “thoughts become things” has become a meme in popular culture. It’s held as a firm proposition in metaphysics, and some spiritual teachers ascribe infinite powers to the mind. But are these claims scientifically accurate? What does the scientific evidence tell us about the scope of the human mind to transform thoughts into reality?

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Publisher's Summary
From Dr. Nicole LePera, creator of "the holistic psychologist"—the online phenomenon with more than two million Instagram followers—comes a revolutionary approach to healing that harnesses the power of the self to produce lasting change.
As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Nicole LePera often found herself frustrated by the limitations of traditional psychotherapy. Wanting more for her patients—and for herself—she began a journey to develop a united philosophy of mental, physical and spiritual wellness that equips people with the interdisciplinary tools necessary to heal themselves. After experiencing the life-changing results herself, she began to share what she'd learned with others—and soon "The Holistic Psychologist" was born.
Now, Dr. LePera is ready to share her much-requested protocol with the world. In How to Do the Work, she offers both a manifesto for SelfHealing as well as an essential guide to creating a more vibrant, authentic, and joyful life. Drawing on the latest research from a diversity of scientific fields and healing modalities, Dr. LePera helps us recognize how adverse experiences and trauma in childhood live with us, resulting in whole body dysfunction—activating harmful stress responses that keep us stuck engaging in patterns of codependency, emotional immaturity, and trauma bonds. Unless addressed, these self-sabotaging behaviors can quickly become cyclical, leaving people feeling unhappy, unfulfilled, and unwell.
In How to Do the Work, Dr. LePera offers listeners the support and tools that will allow them to break free from destructive behaviors to reclaim and recreate their lives. Nothing short of a paradigm shift, this is a celebration of empowerment that will forever change the way we approach mental wellness and self-care.

Mindfulness advertisement
My therapist recommended this book so I decided to give it a chance. I enjoyed how the author took a scientific approach to her concepts, but by about chapter four I realized that the author started to repeat themselves about how their life was falling apart before practicing these concepts and it started to feel more like advertisement rather than a self-help book. I kept waiting eagerly to get to the special activities that could help me achieve the level of change the author talked about, but with each chapter I felt more and more disappointed. This book is nothing but advertisement for the mindfulness movement and offers little insight into how to change your life from a state of trauma to a state of inner peace.
The book’s argument is trauma is completely normal and unavoidable and the only way to overcome it is to become aware of yourself and make new habits that support healthy behaviors. It’s what therapists wish they could tell their clients who complain about the same problems and never do anything to change their life story (which funny enough the author talks about this type of client within the first couple of chapters).
The narrator was good at least. She spoke clearly enough to run this book at twice the speed.

Good Book But Weirdly Obsessed With Racism
Good book with helpful info but once or twice in each chapter the author insists on veering off path to shoehorn in a sentence about racism. I don't know if the author's large instagram following demands performative statements or if she's simply trying to ride the wave of today's cultural climate but it doesn't fit in with the book's main topic and distracts the reader. However, if you can ignore those parts of the book there's lots of helpful info relating to recognizing the causes of your mental health challenges and learning how to treat them.

Not much grace for parents.
There are some good nuggets in the book, but maybe a better read as a physical book. It was a bit long for me at 9 hours. I was pretty sure by chapter 3 that this author had not raised a child. Giving parenting advice not having raised a child is a bit like teaching someone to drive when you’ve only ever been a passenger. I felt a bit bruised and unforgiven as an average parent.

Insightful and Riveting
The narrator vocalized in a way that brought your mind into mentally seeing and living the moments. I found the authorist to be insightful, and peaceful. Love the way she embodied meditation and recognized the revelations in her life path. Many teachable moments are in.this read, along with how to stay in-tune with the current moments. Great read! Great book for identifying your own trauma bonds
This book is more about the psychology of your trauma and how to access trauma you have shielded out. The book points out things you may not have even identified as trauma which is helpful. I think the negative reviews come from people using the book as a solve all method. It is not that. It is simply a guide. The author gives you writing prompts to access your core beliefs and guidance to change your life narrative. I loved her personal stories as it helped me relate on a personal level. Definitely recommend this book to anyone seeking a self healing journey.

SOOOO LIB!!!
This book is so unbearable to listen to. I’ve been in the emotional state this book refers to and I’ve done much of what the book recommends. Then, I was enlightened. Therapy and psychologists didn’t work for me or anyone who really understand what a FULL LIFE is. This is the best advice I can give anyone:
Honestly, snap out of it and get over it. You will never be truly happy if you continue to live this victimhood lifestyle. Find something AND someone that motivate you and fixate on those things. Give God the same chance and energy that you’re giving your therapist and your victim lifestyle (Actually try this and stop hating on this. It really does work. Have you ever noticed how actual practicing Catholics always seem to be happy and at peace. Emphasis on “actual practicing Catholics”.) Lastly, get a job. A real job.
Do all of these and your life and mindset will improve more than you could ever imagine. I promise.
