Publisher's Summary

Taking a brass tacks approach to communication, How to Have Confidence and Power in Dealing with People explains how to interact with others as they really are, not as you would like them to be. The goal is to get what you want from them successfully - be it cooperation, goodwill, love or security.

Les Giblin, a recognized expert in the field of human relations, has devised a method for dealing with people that can be used when relating with anyone - parents, teachers, bosses, employees, friends, acquaintances, even strangers. Giblin shows step by step how to get what you want at any time and in ways that leave you feeling good about yourself. Moreover, the people who have given you want you want wind up feeling good about themselves, too. The result? Nobody gets shortchanged. It's a win-win situation.

Each chapter includes a handy summary, so there's absolutely no chance of missing the book's key points. You can also use these recaps to refresh your memory after you've finished the book. Instead of feeling miserable about your interpersonal skills, listen to this best-selling guide and learn to succeed with people in every area of your life.

Mostly trash, and filler. Do not buy!

Would you try another book from Les Giblin and/or Pat Reilly?

If this is an example of what to expect then no, never.

What do you think your next listen will be?

A book with actual content and not 85% of it informing the reader/listener of the importance of being able to deal with people. I KNOW it's important that is why I made the purchase ... STOP wasting my time with stories and study results concluding its importance and share the tools.

What character would you cut from How to Have Confidence and Power in Dealing with People?

A little dated, but good

You can tell it was written in the 50s by some of the language, but if you can get past all that, it's a solid book with some really good principles to employ.

It is directed at people skills and leadership

This book complements Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People." In fact, the author references Carnegie's principles and Frank Bettger's "How I Raised Myself From Failure to Success in Selling" a few times, as well as other great books. I worried he was not going to have anything original, but I was impressed. He incorporated a lot of research throughout this book and added a significant amount of great things not found in those other books. I would highly recommend this book in general to anyone who wants to work on their people skills, but in particular, it would be a huge benefit to anyone in a leadership position of any sort, which pretty much includes everyone alive in one capacity or another (not just business). It was a great read, and I will certainly read it again, which is not something I plan to do with very many books, but this is one that deserves multiple readings.

A Waste of Money

This is a stunningly bad book, written with a very paternalistic style. In terms of its actual insights, one might think this book was written in 1935. It was listed as a top recommended book by a leadership website I visited, but was a complete waste of money. Anyone who already has a general working knowledge of leadership, interpersonal skills, and being effective with people should avoid this book and find something else that will be of more utility.

Wow

Definitely written from an elitist white male perspective. It had some good points, it having to push through all the “little Johnny’s” and “acknowledge the wife so she can help the sale” talk was too much. In its time, and with the right audience, this probably would’ve been a hit. For me though, I’m gonna say it’s semi-tolerable.

The book that opened my eyes

I read this book a few years ago and it was revelatory for me. I read somebody’s nasty comment and I have to say that if you read this book and still express yourself in a rude manner, you didn’t understand anything about the book or its message. I highly recommend it! It has opened the door to self help books for me and has enabled me to discover different ways to see things.

Written by a right winged, bible bashing idiot

Don’t waste your money unless you a partial to the views of a bible bashing idiot. The theories and ideas he puts forward are basic and puerile at best.

A good book mechanically narrated

Overall, lot of takeaways in this book with a balance of storytelling and contents.
I like the voice quality of the narrator. The book would have been providing a more impactful listening experience if the narrator focus more on the contents rather than the tonal quality and punctuation. Sometimes little difficult listening experience.
