Publisher's Summary

While serving with the Peace Corps in Swaziland, Thomas Cowan encountered the work of Rudolf Steiner and Weston A. Price - two men whose ideas would fascinate and challenge him for decades to come. Both drawn to the art of healing and repelled by the way medicine was - and continues to be - practiced in the United States, Cowan returned from Swaziland, went to medical school, and established a practice. He remained intrigued by the work of Price and Steiner and, in particular, with Steiner's provocative claim that the heart is not a pump. Dr. Cowan believes that Steiner was correct that the heart is not a pump, and our understanding of heart disease is completely wrong. And this gross misunderstanding is the reason heart disease remains the most common cause of death worldwide.

Worthless

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Some facts would have been a nice addition.

What was most disappointing about Dr. Thomas Cowan’s story?

Dr. Cowan said twice that he stayed away from woo-woo, but then invoked the canonical woo-woo mantras -- skepticism about ordinary science, reference to ancient Egyptians, mystic connections with regular polygons and numbers, coining new words, using abbreviations without explaining what they mean, and never giving any statistical or clinical studies to prove his theories. His speculation about water vortices sounded possible, and I was hoping to hear some more explanation or background experiments to back it up, but there were none. There was, however, an abundance of the author's personal life story, and how much he loved his family, and pablum about sunshine and walking barefoot and body contact. I wasn't surprised at the end when he wrote that he gave his patients homeopathic medicine and medicines that were difficult to obtain in this country. There was nothing at all in the book about The Cosmic Heart, whatever that is.

What about David Drummond’s performance did you like?

His voice was extremely clear and pleasant.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Human Heart, Cosmic Heart?

Just about everything.

Any additional comments?

The sample audio segment was unrepresentative of the remainder of the book. The audio segment had a scientific tone, but the actual book was so trite that I had to grit my teeth to finish it so I could give it an honest review.

Fascinating ideas about heart disease and health

I plan on re-listening to this book. Dr. Cowan has an interesting story and presents great ideas. If you want a "sneak peak" at what he's all about, check out Ben Greenfield's recent interview with Dr. Cowan.

Well worth reading.

I plan on listening to this again, now that I'm more familiar with the author's and narrator's respective styles.

Dr. Cowan clearly has a bias going on to this material. He's up front about that, and does not hide it throughout the book. I find this refreshing, and, for me, at times this detracts from his presentation of evidence, and his proposals for fundamental shift in perspective about how we medically understand the heart, heart disease, and heart health. Even with that difficulty, I find myself agreeing with his conclusions as he reaches them.

If you're someone who strongly prefers the typical de-personalized presentation of scientific evidence, not (openly) blended with personal bias and other non-scientific data.... A lot of this book will be difficult to get through. But stick with it if you can. I think you'll likely be glad you did.
The reading style of the narrator is distracting at first as well. It's somewhere between William Shatner and that guy who does narration for action movie trailers.

My review might not sound positive, but it's meant to be. Overall the content is excellent.

Absolutely awesome!

I am very encouraged in learning about our heart in a way I've never heard it taught before; yet it rings true to me personally within my own heart.
Thank you again, Dr. Cowan, for sharing with others what you have learned and what you believe to be truth.

Return and Reawakening

At eighty plus it was a joy to touch into and renew connection with many esoteric threads and fascinations. Opening to the Cosmic Heart gives me new grounding and connection and a whole new world of “epi” phenomena to incorporate and live into.

Profound New Approach to Cardiology

This is arguably Dr Thomas Cowan’s Magnus opus and is a book which deserves to be heard by anyone who has a mind and heart open enough to read/hear it. Built on many years of clinical and life experience, it takes us on a journey through medical science, intellectual history and the journey of Dr Cowan, culminating at the understandings presented in the book. It is highly accessible for both experts and those with the necessary curiosity. Furthermore, it is well read by the narrator. Overall an excellent production and highly recommended.
