The relentless pursuit of high self-esteem has become a virtual religion - and a tyrannical one at that. Our ultracompetitive culture tells us we need to be constantly above average to feel good about ourselves, but there is always someone more attractive, successful, or intelligent than we are. And even when we do manage to grab hold of high self-esteem for a brief moment, we can't seem to keep it. Our sense of self-worth goes up and down like a ping-pong ball, rising and falling in lockstep with our latest success or failure.

Publisher's Summary
How much love do you have for yourself? Not the narcissistic "aren't I wonderful?" kind of love but the essential regard for self that empowers you and helps you navigate through life. The type of love that enables you to feel safe and secure in who you are and inspires you to make choices that are good for your authentic self.
When scientist David Hamilton realized that his own lack of self-love was sabotaging him in hundreds of subtle ways and more than a handful of major ways, he devised an experiment using himself as the guinea pig. For more than a year, David studied the latest research into brain chemistry, neuroscience, and psychotherapeutic and personal development techniques. He realized that self-love was as much about biology as psychology - that self-worth is in our genes but trained out of us. The biological drive to seek connection with others often leads us to try to be someone else to win love and approval. But the brain can be reprogrammed, and David devised 27 powerful exercises that he tested on himself and presents in the book to help you:
- Increase your own level of self-worth
- Connect powerfully with your authentic self
- Attain a greater sense of happiness and general well-being
- Create stronger and more real connections with others

Pretty much the only self improvement/personal growth book you’ll need
I downloaded this book shortly after I discovered the root of all self-help is self-love and self acceptance. While I am grateful for other books I have read in the personal development genre, it really all boils down to the principles in this book. I found it at just the right time and would encourage anyone remotely interested to just go ahead and get the book. Worst thing that happens don’t love it, best thing that happens is it changes your life.

Love Dr. Hamilton!
This book was the first of many books I read on my journey to self-love. I was drawn to this book because of its bases in neuroscience and its practical steps to implement self love in every day life. I love Dr. Hamilton's narration, it brings a personal touch to his work, however I ended up purchasing the physical book just so that I could better follow along his advantageous "self-love gyms." After reading this book, family and friends have mentioned that my posture has changed, I hold my head up higher, I speak more eloquently, and I walk with more purpose. This book also gave me the confidence to make the decision to go back to school to pursue my true passion in life. I would say I am not exaggerating when I claim this book truly changed my life!

I am enough.
At the beginning of the year, I wrote a few goals that sounded more as affirmations then any thing else. My number one was not to doubt myself and as a parenthesis I had wrote (I am enough). The funny thing is that this book found me, I don’t listen, read or purchase help self books. Yet, as I finished it I felt moved in so many ways. January is long gone, and your kind and loving words have come to remind me as the year is coming very soon to an end, that I indeed am enough. Thank you.

Wonderfully narrated by David himself in his charming scottish accent. Brilliant stories to back up his points and it's laden with scientific evidence. I hate self help books
Got to 25%. Got off on the wrong foot with me with a foreword by a woman who reckons her cancer was due to her lack of self love and if she loved herself it’d cure her. They’re keen on telling you this specifically happened during a “NDE” - near death experience. I assume the acronym is an attempt to legitimise it.
I guess maybe give it a go if you’re not informed in biological science but interested and have existed in a state of insecurity and drastically low self-awareness.
This probably isn’t fair, I hate self help books.
‘Read a wider range of books’ they said, ‘you’ll enjoy it!’
Not self help books!

Plain annoying
I bought this as a deal of the day. I generally enjoy self help books and usually find something of value to take away. From the off this one just annoyed me. The person doing the foreword claimed to have cured their cancer through self-love and whilst I don't dispute this is possible it's a dubious claim with which to open a book. Much of the "science" also felt somewhat unscientific. The book is an overly long analysis of the reasons to, and ways you might, increase the extent to which you accept and love yourself. Many have clearly found this book useful, I just found it extremely irksome.

A brilliant, thought provoking read
Even if you’ve done lots of reading and have lots of knowledge about self care, kindness, compassion and basically looking after yourself to be everything to others, this book offers you some brilliant scientific explanations plus some practical tips and advice which I think anyone would benefit from. I also love David’s vulnerability in his writing and his ‘normality’ in being a human being, there’s no airs and graces or perception that he knows it all, he’s a great writer to engage people no matter where people are in their self awareness / self love journey.
