Publisher's Summary

Scaly, grumpy, but oh so cuddly....

As a third daughter on the farming colony of Meterion, Susan’s future prospects aren’t too promising. A pretty face, top-notch skills, and hard work mean nothing if your dowry doesn’t include fertile lands. With her 25th birthday approaching, and no suitors even remotely sniffing in her general direction, Susan will be forced to leave the family lands to work as an indentured servant in the capital city. Her only way out is to settle for an arranged marriage through the PMA - the Prime Mating Agency. She just never expected to be paired with a grumpy, massive lizardman, and above all not to grow so fond of his scales and quirky ways.

With everything going on, the last thing Olix needs is a mate, especially a squishy, scaleless, off-worlder with strange ways and an obsession with farming. He is a hunter, not a dirt digger. The Seer must have been mistaken when she insisted that, for the sake of the people, he take a mate from the stars. How can such a tiny thing be their salvation? And yet, his Susan’s softness is disturbingly addictive while it hides a surprising resilience.

With his ancestral lands on the line and the future of the clans threatened, could this wisp of a woman turn their fate around?

Really great story

I listened to this book on a whim and it was a very pleasant surprise. I loved how honest, open, and communicative the couple was with each other. By making these characters all very reasonable it felt more authentic and actually more sci-fi futuristic. There is some sex, but it is well balanced and healthy interactions (major kudos for Regine making them couples who communicate). The story was engaging and I like the world and universe that was built and could easily take more stories from it.

My only complaints are the virgin bleeding trope (of a 25yr old free woman who has at least passed a few bases on her own) and the lack of modern/environmental menstrual products like cups and disks. Both of these things I find so very silly and disappointing in sci-fi books. I can say the silly virginity part was handled better than most other stories and the menstruation was mentioned in passing, but really expected more modern approaches to both.

As for the narrator, I wasn't too sure at first, but after about 20 minutes I was pretty impressed with Daryl's voice acting and approach to the narration. The sample is good enough to get a feel for his voice, but honestly, it's much better than that short clip.

Surprising

This was a huge surprise. I mean, just look at the cover. It screams "ridiculous, plotless alien porn". Whoever chooses the covers for books, needs to be fired. This book was none of that. At all.

Susan, a human who lives in a (non-Earth) matriarchal society, is a third daughter who has no prospects as she will never own land. She swallows her pride and agrees to marry an alien and move to his planet and adopt his culture. The lizard-esque male she's been matched to is not what she would prefer, but she's out of options.

Olix's people are in a bad situation as their food supply is steadily dwindling and a corporation is bullying them to buy their tribal lands. When the Seer tells him he will take an alien mate who will save their tribe, he agrees to whatever female he is paired with, sight unseen.

There is no insta-lust. They both find each other repugnant. So what we have here is a slow building relationship based in respect and kindness.

There is friction between the tribe and Susan as she tries to convince them to farm their lands rather than rely on the mysteriously disappearing game. Just a couple generations ago, the people were enslaved and forced to work the land, using methods that poisoned it and made the people ill. They fought their way out, but cannot possibly consent to farming the land that has now been restored. They are hunters not dirt-diggers.

This is as much a romantic love story between Susan and Olix as it is a story of how Susan helps to transform the tribe into a successful people who thrive without compromising their values and beliefs.

In the end, this is an uplifting story where everyone gets what they deserve...with some steam on the side. 😉

the female voice was not it

I loved this story and the plot of it all. however I did not like the narrators female voice. it felt strained and like a males imitation of a female. the ending was also too abrupt.

I did love how clever and smart the main female was and the equality in the culture. the customs of the tribes were also interesting. this book was a great easy listen with just the right amount of steamy scenes.

Great!

I loved this story. There relationship was realistic, there are 2 individuals from different species that have different backgrounds/upbringings/beliefs to overcome in order to have their HEA. Thankfully l, although their journey experiences misunderstandings, they hang on to each other and get to reap the rewards!! I would definitely recommend this audiobook!

Surprising

This was surprisingly good. I only say that because I usually read action packed or dark romance but this was a feel good sci Fi that I really enjoyed. Daryl Mayfield did and amazing job with both male and female voices I'll definitely be looking for more of his audiobooks. I would recommend this for those just starting reading science fiction romance. All the good feels.

Amazing Narration!

This is a review for the audiobook that I purchased on Audible.

Daryl Mayfield was incredible. His deep, rumbling voice was very sensual. He perfectly voiced Susan, too. I would have believed that a woman was the voice actor for her part if I didn't know better.

The plot was good, with well described secondary characters in addition to the main characters. The world building was vivid.

This doesn't end on a cliffhanger, yet this book sets the stage for a continuing story arc. I look forward to listening to the next book in the series, I Married a Naga, to find out if the overarching plot really does continue.

Whether or not there is a continuing story arc, I highly recommend reading or listening to this book. You will certainly enjoy it.

I started in the middle of the series and went back to the first book. It was a great, steamy story with strong female that save the world (an alien world).

Flawed assumptions

In many ways this story is set up perfectly, so it took me a while to figure out why it made me so irritated. The conclusion reached was that I was sulking over the narrator. Why does a male voice narrate a story mainly spoken in a woman´s voice? Does the industry lack female narrators? Insanely irritating. For the story itself the matter was less obvious. After all, when listening to a story you open up your mind to receive what is on offer. I really loved the part of the heroine finding the solution in the woods. But that was the only part I loved. Maybe I just don´t like the attitude of easy solutions everywhere for the heroine, while all the others had such gigantic problems. And seriously, starving people will farm the land if they know how to, no matter what happened 100 years before. Ridiculous starting point for the story. We all have starving ancestry somewhere in the past, we are alive because starvation is the mother of all inventions. Ok, so my irritation has a starting point other than the audio. While I do recognize the story has strong points, the flaws are embedded in about every other assumption of the story. I did not enjoy it and am still sulking over the choice of narrator.

Loved this audio!

I have both kindle and audio versions of this book and have enjoyed it more than once ... the whole idea of the Prime Mating Agency, the totally different husband and the wonderful Kayog. I've actually got every one of this series and there isn't one I haven't enjoyed so would recommend the whole series, although this one is still my favourite.

Uniq Alien Romance - Amazing - Fantastic - STEAMY

What an amazing Alien Romance!

First of all, Daryl Mayfield is a great narrator, his female voice was great and his male voice was so hot! he created different voices for all characters and it was great.

The steam, the tenderness between the main characters

Hero is strong and vulnerable and sweet. I loved the communication between the characters and the whole plot, it was unique and a happy read in general. I love when you listen to an audiobook and you feel good the whole time.
