Story
On a frozen January night, a young man loops one end of a long rope over the branch of a tree. The other end he ties around his neck. A snowmobiler will find him 36 hours later, his lifeless eyes staring out at the endless coldwater of Lake Superior. It happens in a lonely corner of the Upper Peninsula, in a place they call Misery Bay, a good 250 miles west of Paradise.

Story
On the afternoon of July 30, 1975, former Teamsters president Jimmy Hoffa left the parking lot of the Machus Red Fox Restaurant in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, never to be seen again. In this story by two-time Edgar Award-winning, New York Times best-selling author Steve Hamilton, Alex McKnight - a former Detroit cop - is sitting at the rail in the Glasgow Inn when a local old-timer tells him an unusual story. It’s the kind of small-town mystery that won’t let Alex sleep at night, but when he goes hunting for answers, he stumbles upon the biggest surprise of his life.

Story
Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in.

Dave Robicheaux felt the bone-grinding pain rip through his body as the .45 did its damage. Through the agonizing haze that enveloped him, he heard an almost inhuman laugh - the hideous, victorious cackling of Jimmie Lee Boggs - a sound he would never forget. It had started out as an ordinary prisoner transfer, then turned into a blood bath when the convicted murderer got hold of a gun.

Publisher's Summary
They brave a violent snowstorm to spend the night together in a historic hotel in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. There, they meet a mysterious old man who seems to know a lot about Natalie - and about her family. But they won't be getting any answers from him - he'll be found frozen to death in a snowbank the very next morning. From this single incident, an old blood feud will be reignited, one going back decades to an event buried in her family's past - an event that even now can still drive men to kill each other.
As much as Natalie doesn't want Alex to become entangled in this web of lies and hatred, there's no way he can let her face this danger alone. This is a man who has gotten beaten up, shot at, and even dragged behind a snowmobile, all because he's a sucker for a friend in need.
How much further will he go for love?

my least favorite
The story is ok, but this narrator sucks! he makes Vinny sound like he's mentally challenged, he can not do a scotish accent so he makes Jackie sound like a thug. it's horrible! then poor Alex, the first girlfriend he has turns out to be a freaking psychotic mess!! this is my absolute least favorite and I am struggling to finish it. if this narrator narrates any other books, I won't buy them.

Ridiculous narration ruins the story!
What did you like about this audiobook?
I like the McKnight series because the plots are fairly interesting and the characters are well developed.
What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?
The narration was atrocious! His feigned upper peninsula accent was terrible, but far worse was the insulting way he represented the Indians in the story! He must have listened the the Lone Ranger and Tonto one too many times, because he represented the Indians as simpletons - just terrible!

How many beatings can Alex take?
I am not sure who takes the worst beatings - Alex, the stories main character, or the listener because of the narration. This book devolves into lots of cursing and a weird love interest who is so vile that no chemistry between the reader and the woman ever develops. The new narrator, who should have been booted after the "Blood is the Sky" intro is as bad as ever destroying the voice of Leon, Alex's former, or present partner transforming him from a very likeable character, and one in which Steve Hamilton has been able to develop a great deal of good chemistry between Alex and audience to just a strange extra that feeds Alex information and guns, which Alex always looses just before being beaten horribly. I am very sad at what became of a great series.

Likeable characters
The books I have listened to by Steve Hamilton have all kept me entertained and wanting to hear more. Not all authors translate so well to audio and no doubt the narrator seals the deal with his skillful vocal talent.

What a Difference a Narrator Makes
If this had been the first Alex McKight Mystery I ever listened to, I would not have wanted to listen to any others. As it was, the narration was so unsatisfying, I had to gut it out to finish it. Alex also seemed so much less appealing in his manner and how he G.D.'d everything and his wimpy, stockerish relationship with Natalie. Alex McKight is a fun series but this selection, especially the narrator, doesn't serve it well.
