Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

But when the dig goes silent, an elite team of battle-hardened military contractors is brought in led by former Marine Max Ahlgren. Publisher's Summary
Swift. Silent. Deadly. Hunted.
Recon Marine Conor McCall didn’t expect action during his training op in the icy waters off Norway. But when a bizarre summer fog engulfed his boat, he and his team found themselves in a pitched fight against strange, cruel monsters emerging from the coastal depths of the North Sea. That was just the beginning.
Stranded in a barren land of mountains, glaciers, and black pines, far from home and unable to contact the world they came from, the marines must prepare for war against murderous barbarians, wicked sorcerers, and foul creatures summoned from the oldest, deepest, and darkest pits of hell. When even their allies are enemies, the Recon Marines must do what they have always done: adapt or die. But with a world of ice and monsters seeking to destroy them, every second is mission-critical.
US Marine Veteran Peter Nealen delivers a thrilling, action-packed WarGate adventure that blends the world-building of Eaters of the Dead with the gritty combat and real-life tactics of Forgotten Ruin.

Alone and Unafraid
This is the first book I've read by this author. I don't write reviews often. I don't think I'm good at it and I'm not a wordsmith.
Ice and Monsters is the latest offering I've read in the Fantasy/Mil Sci-Fi mashup genre. In a phrase, it is a headlong flight into speed, surprise and violence of action. Repleat with running firefights, base defense strategies and "L" shaped ambushes; the hard nosed NCOs of the Recon Platoon fight their way into the unknown.
Character development continues on as we get to know Conor McCall and his team. The dynamic between Gunnery Sergeant Taylor and Captain Sorensen intrigues me. If you have ever served, you've served with both of them at some point. Sometimes its salvageable, sometimes it isn't.
Military tactics are sound and Peter's experience is evident. We like to yell at the TV when they get easy stuff wrong. No yelling here. I can't wait for the series to continue.
See, not a wordsmith.

Monsters and more monsters and that's about it...
Straight run and gun with some basic military strategy. Ton of monsters some ghostly humanoids some semi-realistic, some literal phantoms in armor. It's almost as much a ghost story as anything else. The writer is having a good time coming up with ideas but for any reader looking for more than a kaiju lovefest this story was barely worth a credit. I kept expecting some kind of big finale but I bet you can guess what it is. I'm going to pass on next one.

Starts with a sprint and doesn't let up.
Mr Nealen throws you right into this fantastical world with a fight for the characters lives that doesn't let up. When the sprint slows to a quick jog there is still a sense of an axe hanging over their heads. Cannot wait for the next book.

Gripping listen from the beginning to the end
I've listened to a lot of military science fiction, and recently got into what I might call military fantasy books. Much like the Forgotten Ruin series where contemporary military forces are put into a world with fantasy creatures, Peter Nealen puts a group of Marines into an icy land that is way more foreign than the Norway they thought they'd be training in. The characters are all well-developed and not as stereotypical as in some other military fiction series. The situation they find themselves in has many similarities to places and operations that anyone in the military may have experienced in the last two decades, but with a twist of magic and monsters. This is the first book I've listened to with Mark Boyett as the narrator, and he does a great job of making the characters sound different from one another so you don't get confused about who's talking in the middle of the particularly exciting sequences. Overall this was an enjoyable book and I'm looking forward to more in this series.

Hated this
At some point, I just refuse to empathise with those that bring misfortune onto themselves.
I can't speak to what it's like in the American military, but if this is how you would realistically comport yourselves in this situation - like obedient lambs walking to the slaughterhouse - then I've no interest in reading about 'realistic' soldiers.
