Publisher's Summary

A. L. Graziadei's Icebreaker is an irresistible YA debut about two hockey players fighting to be the best - and the romance that catches them by surprise along the way.

Seventeen-year-old Mickey James III is a college freshman, a brother to five sisters, and a hockey legacy. With a father and a grandfather who have gone down in NHL history, Mickey is almost guaranteed the league's top draft spot.

The only person standing in his way is Jaysen Caulfield, a contender for the number one spot and Mickey's infuriating (and infuriatingly attractive) teammate. When rivalry turns to something more, Mickey will have to decide what he really wants and what he's willing to risk for it.

This is a story about falling in love, finding your team (on and off the ice), and choosing your own path.

Outstanding narrator absolutely *makes* this book

I admit I'm fairly new to Audible, about 14 books so far, and I've heard some great narrators, but Tom Picasso is hands down my favorite so far. The absolute emotion he put into Mickey's POV made this book even better - and I like the book pretty well as it is. Is the plot flawless? No. But it's still a good story about LGBTQ+ rivals-turned-lovers, about finding yourself, about coping with near-crippling depression and anxiety, the importance of family and of found family. I could hardly bear to turn the book off when I stopped driving, because Tom Picasso's voice made me feel so much. HIGHLY recommend this audiobook for anyone who likes sports stories, LGBTQ stories, stories about coping with anxiety/depression, or all three. I don't know a thing about ice hockey, but I still loved this. I blame Tom Picasso. ;-)

Most authentic view of depression

This was a great story and had the most realistic depiction of depression I have ever heard. It was great to hear this tale.

Excellent!

This book has a lot. An outstanding performance by the narrator. Really deep characters and complex character arcs. Delicious tension between the two main characters. Characters fearful of making themselves vulnerable and then working through those vulnerabilities. It's silly to say, but I know I'm going to miss these characters, and I really hope there will be many sequels to come.

Great character

Well written, realistic character. Well narrated. Kept me interested. But please tell me this was a Part One. This story just petered out and I want more.
Being the first reviewer of a debut makes it hard for me to delete a star because of the ending.
